The “Helping Hand” Comes to the Rescue Again!

Gift…

Do you remember when you made your first box of Hamburger Helper? … It was introduced in 1971… the year my first son was born… by “General Mills”… Betty Crocker the cultural icon, as well as the brand name and trademark of American Fortune 500 corporation General Mills was  quite popular… The name was first developed by the Washburn Crosby Company in 1921 as a way to give a personalized response to consumer product questions… The name Betty was selected because it was viewed as a cheery, all-American name… It was paired with the last name Crocker, in honor of William Crocker, a Washburn Crosby Company director…

Hamburger Helper was a way to stretch 1 pound of Hamburger (Ground Beef)  … into more helpings… it consisted of some kind of pasta and a packet of powdered sauce and seasonings

Now you can purchase Tuna Helper… Italian Helper… Asian Helper… Mexican Helper… Chicken Helper… Even Complete Helper… Stretching other types of meat as well… And now combined with rice… potatoes… or pasta…

In 1977 a left-handed white glove with four fingers became the mascot for the famous Hamburger Helper product… making him the “Helping Hand” to all housewives trying to stretch a dollar…

There are 40 different flavors… and I admit I have tried quite a few… Most of the time… my family has said they were quite good… I usually add a vegetable or salad and my meal is complete…

One of our favorites…I cooked this week… Ultimate Beef Stroganoff

When working every day…they became a staple a couple of times a week… I felt at least my family was getting a hot meal…and the bonus of being economically friendly was pretty good too…

A few of our favorites… Yes, I even make them since I’m retired… are:

Tuna Tetrazzini

Tomato Basil Penne …

Crunchy Taco …

Chicken Fried Rice

When someone asks, “What are you having for supper?” … I don’t always say Hamburger Helper… I just say… “Homemade Beef Stroganoff with a nice salad”…

It is made in my home and it is called Beef Stroganoff… I believe that’s all I need to say…

  1. Hey, you’re right! You made your dishes at home, and you get to name it what you like!
I had no idea there were so many varieties of “helper,” but I guess it’s a testament to a good thing! Thanks for the fun post! ~ Sheila

  2. This was fun to read and I have a confession to make. I’ve never eaten hamburger helper and wasn’t even aware of the range either… Today, I learned something new! :-) TY!
