Our City Made the News…

It has been hard to focus…

It seems as if days have passed… but, yet… it’s only been two…

Thunderstorms rolled in Thursday night and sat over our city all evening… night… into the next day…

Last count was 6-7 inches of rain…

The lightning strikes counted were up to 3000… at one time… and the thunder of course shook us out of deep sleep…

Water started filling every nook and cranny… The wetlands behind our home in the woods… filled to capacity…

and overflowed into all of the ditches… and finally having no where else to go… made it’s way to our backyards… and into our homes…

The pipes laid for such purpose… were filled to overflowing…

Cars were caught in the flash flooding…

People had to be brought out in small boats from their homes…

The streets became impassable…

We call this a disaster…

Loss of property… loss of time… loss of our every day quality of life…

It started creeping in from the back woods/wetlands… the fence is our property line… at the back of our backyard…

I measured how deep it was getting by my big flower-pot… as the rains kept coming…

you can still see flower-pot at this point…

Flower pot has dissapeared… and about 10 feet from our deck at this point…

The front street became impassable in this area… after getting deeper…

As you can see the water has receded… leaving a coat of mud… and markings of how deep on the shed wall…

This morning I woke up and went to the door to see how things were going…

The water is receding it seems… leaving much debris on the streets and in yards…

Our sump pump has not quit running since Thursday…

We have had one burn out like this… but, so far… so good!…

We have a mess to clean up…

The water and debris coming up from the drain in our basement covered two rooms…

Making everything wet… and some things are ruined…

Caught us quite off guardcoming in the middle of the night!…

We haven’t been able to bath, flush toilets, wash clothes, do dishes… cooking is limited…

Our back yard will be OKDrying out will take daysMud left to coat certain areas...

Some people were trapped in their carslost everything… as they were evacuated from their homes…

I believe we made the national news!

We were lucky not to encounter that!…

We will begin disinfecting thingswashing all of the towels/clothes soaked with water… the rugs…

We will bathe, “flush”, do dishes... and be glad we can!

Unless more rain comes in… we will try to get back to some normalcy

Today will be a new day!…

  1. Good Morning Marilyn,
it seems we all survived the big thunder storm of 2015. Like you were cleaning up today and pitching out wet carpet. Our basement just smells from all the sewer water and residue from the aftermath of this storm. It could have been a lot worse for us because the sump pump and back flow valve that MSD installed saved us from having 6 feet of water in the basement. What a day we all had yesterday, but like you said today’s a new day!!! Let’s all have a Happy Water Free Easter!!!
Hugs, friendship and lots of sunshine,
    Andrea

  2. I thought about you often and wondered if you were alright. I am glad to hear you are but saddened that you had so much flooding. God bless and a prayer for quick drying of everything.

  3. Marilyn, I didn’t see this in the news, but my husband says he saw it. Glad y’all are okay. Did this happen after your poem about the storm? Or is this from the same storm? So sorry. Lots of work to clean up after that. But so thankful your family’s okay.
