Salt Dough Ornaments and Packing Cookies

Today has been any day but, Saturday…

I don’t know how many times… it has run through my mind…

“This can’t be Saturday!”…

But, it is…

and Grandkids are coming to spend the night…

I’ve decided to make Salt Dough Ornaments with them…

I made them with my own boys when they were young…

and are still popular to make with kids today…

A batch is made from:

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1/2 cup water

Stir and knead it like a dough… (NOT Edible)

Need:

Rolling Pin

Cookie Sheet (I’m covering mine with Parchment Paper)

Toothpick or any object that will make a hole to hang the ornament with…

I usually use a straw… Makes a perfect hole for the hanger…

Miniature Cookie Cutters or any shaped object that will cut like a cookie cutter…

After baking in a 250 degree – 300 degree oven for 2 hours…

Let cool completely and paint with acrylic paints …

Glitter Glue or Glitter Paint can also be used…

I also spray mine with a clear acrylic to make them shiny and lasting…

Ribbon… twine… string for hanging…

Will post our creations tomorrow…

Today… after deciding it IS Saturday…

I decided to pack cookies for mailing next week…

I had bought containers for the ones going out of town…

Neighbors were put on pretty Christmas Paper Plates…

I layered the containers… with the cookies… parchment paper… more cookies… paper… more cookies… and a last layer of tissue paper to keep them from breaking in their journey out-of-town…

I will put them in another box… so hopefully they will reach their destination with little breakage…

I’ve been doing this for many years…

so I think I’ve got it pretty much in control…

With mailing them next week… I feel they will get to enjoy them before Christmas when people come by to visit…

I even had some left for my own cookie jar!

Not a Match Box Car

I found a Match Box… No, not a little car…

Not a collectible…

It’s a metal box used to hold real wood matches…

I decided to paint it to “match” my kitchen where I hung it…

Sprayed it black… then used my acrylic paints to paint it…

Looks similar to my wallpaper border…

and my painting I did a few months ago…

I use matches to light my candles… my gas stove sometimes, when it won’t automatically come on and the fire pit outside…

They use to be a staple for a kitchen… but, not so much anymore…

I imagine people collect these… being from the 1940’s…

These are a few from EBAY… priced around $12.00…

I probably paid less than $2.00…

I liked it probably… because of memories of having one when growing up…

Vase of Flowers

Another painting class… This time with a friend I made at the YMCA… She picked a picture of a vase with flowers to paint… The store… KOCH’S Painting… lists several different choices to pick from… on a monthly calendar…

I always like the choices but, usually end up making it my own… in some way… The flowers in the picture were all pink…

This was the one we were to copy…

I made them the colors I have in my bathroom… I had the same picture up for so long… I decided I needed a change…

I’ve painted a long time… so I’ve learned from trial and error as I go… but, can always learn a new technique… a new way of doing things…

My friend painted hers pretty much like the picture offered… It was really nice… It takes about 3 hours to complete… By using acrylic paint … the paintings dry pretty quick with the aid of a hair dryer …

The girl who owns the store and her partner have said they would like me to teach some of the classes… I would jump at the chance … It would be ideal!… A few days a week… teaching what I love… doing what I love… Talking to people and seeing the joy on their faces as they make something with their own hands… So when their new store opens… I hope to be working again… Retirement is good… but, having a job like this would be right up my alley!

No WINE!… I’ll paint anyway!

I posted on a painting I did with others at

I went to another class with “Wine and Canvas” last night…

Doesn’t compare… sorry to say…

The people were very nice… no problem there..

The surroundings were OK…

It was held at Mimi’s Cafe here in Louisville…

This group holds classes at different restaurants in the area… on different dates…

Faults I found…

Crowded…

No wine or snacks as their name indicates…BUMMER!… you could order and pay for your own…

They didn’t provide all colors of paint… Only the colors of the painting that the instructor had chosen…

I came to paint an Eiffel Tower for my bathroom…pinks…gray…black…

No red…or pink to be had… Only black, blue, green, white and yellow…

See why I was disappointed??? …Both my friend and I needed the pink or at least some red/white to make our own pink… to finish our painting…

So… I finished it at home this morning… and she is doing the same…

As I said …It’s a great idea… and holding it at restaurants is OK too… but, not what I expected!…

I love to paint and being with my friend I used to work with was great!…

I also had gotten a coupon off of the internet for 1/2 off … So instead of $70 for the two of us… it was $35 for us… and sharing that… made it $17.50 each…

That should have nothing to do with the wrongs I found… They had done the advertising and deal…

So… it helps to check out these things…
