My “few???” Autumn Decorations…

Gift…

First Day of Autumn… Today!… September 22, 2012…

and it definitely feels like t here in Louisville

Cool air… partly sunny… kids playing outside… people out talking in the neighborhood…

It’s a friendly time I think… A calm after such a hot summer… I even breathe better…with the cooler air…

I’ve been wanting to have a yard sale… Get rid of the things that have accumulated again… I say again… because it seems to happen again… and again… Collecting things I don’t need or want anymore…

So this is also a good time to get out the Fall items I put out…

I used to go all out… when the boys were little… and then I carried on the tradition when the Grandkids came… But, now I do what I feel like doing… A much smaller scale… but still festive

Right now Halloween is approaching… I like the Fun Halloween over the Scary… Mostly Autumn decorations… with a little Halloween… I do inside and out…

 Centerpiece for coffee table…

My wood duck couple… harvesting their pumpkins…

A gourd grown by my husband’s brother many, many years ago…

My cute black cat candle holder… with his piece of candy corn…

A jingle bell jack-o-lantern given to me by a friend on a trip to Nashville, Indiana… A great place for shopping and viewing the change of color in the leaves…

Another candle holder… Actually I have a pair of these… with their metal witches hats… They are so cute when lit at night…

My new Fall salt/pepper shakers I bought at a Cracker Barrel on a trip I took recently to see a blogging friend… I named the squirrel “Pepper” to make it easier to remember which is salt… and which is pepper…

Another candle holder for my kitchen table… It has such cute details…

and another view follows…

Placements for kitchen table…

Kitchen table… table runnerBlack CatFrankenstein…

and…

Jack-o-lantern and Mummy…So fun!

Just enough!…

Outside we go… I found this pretty “new” Autumn flag at the Thrift Store… My others were getting a little worn…

Pretty yellow and red Mums for my front porch pots…

A cute Wind Sock to hang on our swing… blowing in the breeze…

A metal Jack-o-lantern near the back deck…

Just a little plastic “Jack-o-lantern” for the flower bed that has no more flowers…

Flowers are dwindling… A little wood stake to replace them…

and another one…

I’ve stuffed all the orange lights I had inside this big plastic pumpkin… I believe he’s pretty old… Found at my favorite “Unique” Thrift… He should be pretty lit at night… greeting all of the Trick or Treaters on Halloween…

A Metal Jingle Bell Halloween Wreath tied with a spider web bow hangs on the hook by the front walk… It now replaces the flowers that have since withered…

and finally the wreath I redid to add some life into something I’ve had a long time…

a Spider…

a Black Cat…

 a Mummy…

Happy Halloween…

“The Smells of Autumn”

I love the smell of Autumn … I bought a candle called Toasted Almond” … It was such a yummy smell … I could have almost taken a bite of it… It seems that candles  can take on any scent… Like “Hot Butter Rum” “Whipped Pumpkin Pie” Spiced Cider” Maple Butter and even Sugar Cookie”  … Isn’t it nice to go into someone’s house and it smells so good… When I was younger and in my first house … the closest thing to fancy smelling candles was to put some spices like cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg in a pan of water and simmer it on your stove… even orange peel at times… I also like the outside smells of Autumn… like wood burning when marshmallows are being roasted , walking in the cool air through fallen leaves , apples, oranges and pumpkins  on display at a fruit stand… There’s also the smells of foods that we like to cook in the Fall… chili , stews , soups, baked pumpkin spice muffins  and warm breads Autumn is a great time to wake up your sense of  “Smell”

“My Kids!”…
When we had our Holiday Bazaar at school…we made a lot of homemade items …I would come up with the ideas and the kids would execute them with some guidance and encouragement…We made candles that looked like stained glass … It took collecting old candles of any color or scent … saving our small milk cartons from the cafeteria , purchasing some candlewicks and then all we needed was crushed chunky ice … After cutting off the top of the cartons we had small square boxes …They were then washed and let dry… Over a double boiler of hot water we melted the old candles… Ice chunks were placed in the cartons and the hot wax was poured over it … A wick was inserted …The ice cooled the hot wax fairly quickly while the hot wax melted the ice into various shapes with some slight holes in it … After cooling and removing the carton you had an unexpected, one of a kind, unique candle … The surprised look of achievement on our student’s faces was worth all of the time spent in making them… They had created a wonderful Autumn Smell”

Crisp, Cool Air…

We’re going to Glendale, KY … One of my favorite Fall Festivals… It’s actually called the Glendale Crossing Festival… A one day event but, huge!… It is the 3rd Saturday in October… so this year it is October 15th… Begins at 8:00am with a parade of local talent…tractors … horses… music … etc. … We get there from Louisville in about an hour… 53 miles… We’ve got this trip pretty down pat… Meet at Jerry’s Restaurant  on Preston… park our cars and hop in whoever’s car has decided to drive … Pitch in a little toward gas… We trade-off… Breakfast on the way down  or  … Get there about 8:30am…We know the route and the best place to park… We have only one thing in mind… have fun! … This means looking a lot!… eating at the Whistle Stop Restaurant  … buying something unusual! talking and laughing a lot! … trying different foods!  … and coming home tired! …Few men would understand or would do it… There are going to be 5 of us… Two friends I worked with… my cousin from Tennessee and my sister…It will be her first time… An experience awaits… There are hundreds of craft booths…selling anything you can imagine … lots of food vendors with all sorts of different good smells to entice your taste buds  … Quaint decor shops with the neatest gifts and antiques    … Some will Christmas Shop … Some will look and look and look and maybe not buy anything… Then there will be others with their arms so burdened down  with neat trinkets and finds… Old things , new things, Holiday things, homemade things  … Midday we begin to get in line to eat at the Whistle Stop…very historical… located right near the Railroad Track   that you cross over to enter this neat little town …but, no crossing except by foot today… Too many people! … I would recommend this eventful day to anyone who loves getting with good friends and enjoys the cool crisp fall air… Hot Apple Cider anyone?

“My Kids!”…

Autumn brought us to a market  where the kids could buy a pumpkin … We had negotiated a deal before we left with the farm or fruit stand we would be shopping at … Not the enormous ones that they would like to have…but, one they could hunt for and carry themselves… It was cute watching them go from one to the other picking the one that would be just right … Sometimes we walked out to the field and sometimes we rode out on a wagon … of course this was our favorite!… We’ve been to Huber’s Farm in IndianaTower View Farms in Taylorsville  and Slow Poke Farm in Shepherdsville … Just a wonderful day out in the cool air… Besides seeing pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns already carved … we saw cornstalks apples…farm animals  … horse-drawn wagons and tractors… apple cider …and sometimes homemade sweets and breads … I can just smell all of those flavors and scents mingled and wafting through the air… Find your jacket… Let’s go!

“Scarecrow” Time!

I’ve been trying to at least walk around the block and do my stretching exercises  “mandated” by the PT for my sciatic nerve…It has helped… I really enjoy walking because of all the things you see… The leaves are already starting to change color and some are falling to the ground… Acorns have also fallen from all of the Oak Trees in our neighborhood… The summer flowers are looking a little withered, but Fall Chrysanthemums  are trying to bud and bloom…Pretty colors of orange, yellow, red and deep purples… Some people have stuck a Scarecrow or two in their yard for decoration…The cooler weather we have had has people’s minds heading into the Autumn mode… I know I really enjoy this season…Cool, not cold… Making soups  and chili comes to mind… A light sweatshirt or jacket  just for a little warmth… I was going to wait… seemed a little early…but, since I have the time and like being outside… I’ve stuck my own Scarecrows and Fall Flowers around the house… I’m always surprised as to what I find in my “Fall Finds” from the year before…It’s like opening up a present… Some things I have had a long time…and a few new things purchased at the end of last season… This is when I’m glad my memory is not as sharp as it used to be… It puts a smile on my face to unwrap and display my forgotten memories and wonderful “finds” from the previous year! …Yes, Ms. Autumn  your Season is really quite lovely!

“My Kids”!…

Autumn meant our kids  started to wear sweaters or jackets to school  …This would seem to be a normal thing to do…and it usually is…But, if you’ve worked at a school…it can be interesting!…First they want to wear their jackets all day in the classroom…Having a dress code… it wasn’t permitted and besides it was usually warm in the classroom …so no need…Then of course the challenge started between student and teacher…The kid’s saying, “Why not?…I’m cold!… I need it!  … Someone will take it!”…That’s just the beginning…Since it starts by being cold in the mornings, then warms up by afternoon… The jackets were usually left on the hook  at school or left on a seat of the school bus  on the way home…Who has to find these missing items??? Us, of course… I have to admit I loved the parents who wrote their kid’s name on the tag at the neck of their jacket…Then there was no problem getting it to the right child… Believe it or not we’ve had students wear the same color and style of sweatshirt … and then another argument ensued… Maybe Ms. Autumn  … you would like to oversee the… “Lost and Found Department” since your Season is what brings in that cooler jacket weather!
