My Sunday Grateful: October 20, 2013

We had a lovely day!…

My husband and I enjoying an outing to Bethlehem, Indiana… for their Fall Festival… appropriately called Autumn On the River”…

( Highway 62 … heading to New Washington turn off that leads to Bethlehem)

I just love the name… pictures automatically come to mind…

fall leaves in color… the Ohio River running along side this quaint little town

(The Ohio River meanders by as we walked around the small town)

People traveling from other towns to enjoy a beautiful day of music, crafts, foods, and sights…

(The young man singing on stage sounded a lot like “Randy Travis” … and added to the atmosphere as we sat and ate… some sitting at tables and others on bales of hay)

131020_012

(The pulled pork BBQ sandwich was wonderful… and a Funnel Cake later… that was my husband’s choice… I usually opt for the Persimmon Pudding)

131020_014

(Abe Lincoln showed up… and rose from his rocking chair to shake my hand)

A room dedicated to some of the history of Bethlehem…

(History is so important to these folks… ancestors photos and memorabilia filled a couple of rooms of the old school-house that has been refurbished)

A small town for sure… winding road leading to it… around curvy roadsdeep valleys

Cars were starting to line up as we neared our destination…

and fields that have turned brown… 131020_033131020_002

The small white church 131020_032

… and the people who have lived there all of their lives

Mingling together on warm summer days… and now in the cooler days of Autumn…

There were around 100+ vendors set up with their items for sale…

marshmello on fire

We drove up to Butler Park one day for some overnight campingk8707052

Looking forward to it so much…

It’s about 50 miles in Carrollton, KY

Our boys were young and so enthusiastic

So excited as we packed the car with all of our equipmentk12926424

We decided to roast marshmallows and hot dogs on sticks… like all campers do

k7554151

We had our tent set up… k0867296

food/drinks in the ice coolerKS2824

Picnic table covered with the tablecloth

Plans for hiking the next day050c0104pm … checking out the activities at the campgroundk6354447 … swimming in the pool…x16287267

The wood we collected… was a little dampk5791375

Bobby tried and tried to get it started…

We poked paper in it… found dry twigsk7290310

but, to no avail…

Finally… he decided a little charcoal lighter k9427254might work…

and it did!…

Our fire was burning  k0509990 …

but, we didn’t let it burn long enough…

We stuck our hotdogs on twigs we made… stuck them over the fire… and roasted them until they were charcoal themselves… a black crispy crust formed on them…

This was good!… we were really going to have some food cooked over an open fire

We ate… and I immediately started tasting the charcoal starter taste

x10275625

The more I ate and drank the worse it got!…

k13613069

I couldn’t get that taste out of my mouth!

Then… my stomach began to do flip-flops and hurt… I have never been so nauseated!…

I’m moaning… groaning… trying not to… but, I just couldn’t help it…

I really just wanted to roll up in a ball and die!…

I couldn’t talk… could hardly breathe… couldn’t do anything!…

k11078832

After about an hour of this and no relief… Bobby decides to just take me home

I was so sorry… but, at the moment could care less

I just wanted relief…

I hated it for the boys…

I hated it for Bobby…

I hated it for myself…

So, at about 10:00pm we loaded into the carleaving most of the camping supplies right where they were… and headed back home

I moaned all of the way home! k6730872

NEVER!… NEVER!… Do I remember being so sick!

Bobby went back and got all of our camping supplies by himself…

Driving 50 miles each way late at night k6013497 …

I don’t remember the kids being that upset…

I believe they saw I was so sick and couldn’t help it…

I think I tasted lighter fluid for a week or more… It seemed to be imbedded in my taste buds… and my nostrils retained that smell of wood and charcoal fluid even longer…k13228390

The Marshmallows were still in their bag… snuggled k13591630 like we would have been in our sleeping bags 42-17152864

Grateful there would be no S’more k2064814 making that night!

A Tired Grandma???

A day with my Grandkids is the best day I can have!…

They just have a few days left until Christmas Break is over

As Dad went to work… he dropped them off…

Not the oldest one… being almost 18… she has a job… a boyfriend and lots of friends

Not that she doesn’t come over and like being with me… but, does not need to be watched

I give of myself for the day…  when they are over…

That means little cleaning k9574809 cooking  k0589216 but, for them… and thinking of interesting things for us to stay busy…

They arrived a little sleepy and me… still in my PJ’s k10910249

Dad had gotten them pancakes  k9288661 at McDonald’s

They decided on some chocolate milk k7319212for Carson…and strawberry milk k1333550for Kennedy… and to watch some TV… for a little while…

After Grandma got herself together… we headed for our walk to Wal-Mart… We cut through the back woods near our home as all kids do…

130103_002

and look for anything interesting along the way…

Today we saw Lichen growing on some logs since we have had lots of damp weather

They say “YUCK!”… and I say it’s quite pretty

130103_004

 130103_003  (“powder-edged ruffle lichen”)

The path is worn from all of the kids and adults taking a short cut

We cross the back parking lot

130103_013

130103_012

130103_014

and spot some interesting looking concrete blocks used for decorative purposes… Carson said they would make a great garage… We have called him “Builder Bob” since he was small… loves to make things!

130103_015

130103_016

We decide to get a movie… at the Red Box… for $2.00… it’s a deal

Kennedy picks “Timothy Green”  51Bh0jHefUL__SX500_ and Carson picks “Madagascar” 61pNq2T3EQL__SX500_

130103_019

They get to pick lunch from the deli… for quickness sake… and then something they will eat for supper… Kennedy picks Popcorn Chicken and Mashed Potatoes… Carson… just BBQ Chicken but, says, ” I want something in the Cake Mix aisle”…

I guess we will be baking!…

He has already indicated PIZZA would be great for his supper!… and of course that’s fine with me… He’s at Grandma and Poppy’s house!

Kennedy decides on Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper… How easy can it be!…

and they both decide on corn…”We love corn!”, they both say…

Big Red from the soft drink aisle and then Carson shows me what he wants to bakeChocolate Whoopies… sounds like fun to me!..

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After I pick up a few things… we decide to head back…

Uncle Doug shows up as a surprise… and says he will take the groceries back in the car… He kinda figured we would have a “few” things to carry…

Thanks , Doug!

130103_021

We sttart walking back and find a new hat (toboggan) with the tags on it… Hate to think it… but, I think someone has stolen this from Wal-MartSo sad!…

130103_010

We see where the fence opening is as we get to the path behind our house…

130103_024

The kids cross over the bridge Poppy has built across the ditch that runs behind our property…

130103_026

We close the gate…and arrive home…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The fresh air has felt good!…

We rest…

We eat…

We make hotels and castles from all of the empty boxes I save…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We make books with stories…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We play on the computer… k3896878

We play soccer ball outside…

We watch “Karate Kid” 220px-Karate_kid … instead of the movie they bought… pretty typical

Carson did watch Madagascar later…

They play on their indoor basketball goal in the hallway…k0213453

to save my breakables…

Suppertime comes and their favorite foods are fixed… with their help in making the Whoopies

I tell Carson to get a wooden spoon to beat the cookie batter… and he proceeds to tell me, “I don’t want splinters in my cookies!”… and gets a plastic spoon…

That makes me chuckle

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Time has gone by fast… and Daddy is coming in the door to pick them up around 9:45pm… He works a funny shift… but, it works with their schedule

They leave with hugs and kisses… and Grandma collapses! k3145675 …

I wonder why???

“Thanksgiving… a Labor of Love”

I thought I’d let my thoughts wander to my Mom and Dad‘s home for a moment… It is Thanksgiving Day …

Actually, I’ll have to back up a few days before… maybe weeks…because my Dad was the shopper   and bought all of the ingredients for our wonderful Holiday Feast of Thanksgiving … From the moment I could remember… I watched him slowly begin to bring in all the ingredients   a little at a time… not knowing then, how expensive a big dinner like we were about to have cost… anything my Mom needed to cook our meal for this glorious day! … About a day or two before the big day my Mom would start to thaw the turkey … It was placed in water sometimes to thaw…

Usually not enough room in the refrigerator … with all the goodies for baking pies   or making salads… especially 5-cup Salad… pineapple, mandarin oranges, sour cream, coconut, and maraschino cherries   … I woke up to the smell of the turkey already baking  wafting through the air …enticing my nose with the anticipation of homemade dressing with lots of celery and onions…not just one kind but, three … regular, cornbread and oyster… I tasted all of them! sweet potatoes with marshmallows melted  and browned in the oven mashed potatoes with extra butter sitting right in the middle of them oozing down … the colorful salad with those wonderful cherries only bought on holidays … I, hoping there were some left for me to eat right out of the jar Green beans, Ford Hook Lima-beans   and corn for our vegetables… Mom’s homemade Mashed Potato Rolls… the aroma was scrumptious… wonderful turkey gravy made from the “drippings”... Cranberry relish made from fresh cranberries, sugar and oranges YUMMY! … besides the traditional jelly type… There would be pumpkin pies, pecan pies , a cake or two… I set the table with a pretty tablecloth, napkins, the “good” dishes/silverware and glasses… many years later… paper plates, but not in this memory!… I iced the glasses…cut the cranberry jelly in rings and placed in the pretty relish dish… sometimes there would be celery stuffed with pimento cheese… because of left overs from making dressing… The table was so crowded and just sumptuous! … We waited for all to arrive… My two brothers/wives/kids…my two sisters and their families … and friends and relatives who were invited…  Never enough room at the big dining room table…although at least a dozen would crowd around… Extra places in the living room sufficed for the little ones and whoever was running late… Grace was said  by whoever volunteered to thank our Lord for the abundance of food and family that we shared…

I remember all talking at once, much laughter and lots of “yums” as the food was passed and tasted… My Mom had outdid herself again … and now I wonder how she pulled it off… So much to do…So many to prepare for… and not one complaint… I can only believe it was done with the help of Dad, a good provider… and the LOVE  she had for all who entered their home … a true blessing!

“My Kids”…

I just recently heard that two of my favorite teachers, a Ms Mantooth and a Ms Grubbs are thinking of retiring… They were the leaders of a team of students at TJ called “The Shooting Stars”

… Every other October this team held what was called Muster Day… Some would call it Pioneer Day … The kids mustered together like they did so many years ago and planned a big event for the Fall Harvest

Included in this tradition was a roasted pig (BBQ) , fried bacon, homemade apple cider , corn on the cob, beef stew

, pumpkin pie, corn bread and butter making … Pioneer games, jewelry, corn husk dolls and square dancing … Displays explaining many aspects of pioneer life… A wonderful event enjoyed by the students, teachers , friends and families… Soon after these same teachers and students held a Thanksgiving Luncheon complete with turkey and all the trimmings for all the participating students and their families… And since our little group of Special Ed Kids provided the beef stew , corn bread   and pumpkin pie   (“Pioneer”- Patriot Bake Shop) for Muster Day…we were included…  Tablecloths were spread on the tables, handmade center pieces arranged on each table, food set out in long rows with great care… The students greeted everyone that was invited and then enjoyed the fruits of their labor just like the traditional Muster Day people   … The LOVE  these teachers showed through this event was truly a blessing!  ...They will surely be remembered.

Happpy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Taking Part In “The Old and New”

It’s been 7 months since I started my BLOG … I think I will start a new one for the year 2012 … I started writing about working with my kids at school … almost a never-ending story…but, since I have found my interest going in a different direction … I’ve learned that’s OK… I will finish what I have started… I’m like that… need to complete tasks I start… and then I can go on to other ideas … I find that maybe it’s because I am finally starting into another part of my life … When you have done something for over 30 years …it’s hard to stop thinking about it…In my case the schools , the teachers , the kids, the adventures and friends I made… I was so drawn to what I had left… but, now I’m looking in other areas… of things to do, to see  and feel…It’s kind of encouraging that I can go on to new beginnings … and I do intend to try new things, meet many more people, learn new things every day and maybe even change my thoughts and patterns that are so instilled in my being…The world is so glorious with all that it has to offer Why not take part in it!

“My Kids!”…

In the Fall , a team at school called “The Shooting Stars, held Muster Day in October… It was like a pioneer day apple cider making , square dancing , corn husk doll making , quaint games from years past, cake walks , making beaded necklaces, cooking corn in the husk , roasting a pig  and serving BBQ to all who wanted to try it, frying jowl bacon on an open fire and our contribution would be beef stew , corn bread and pumpkin pie … We had such a good time! … It took months for the students and our kids who were included to learn the steps to the square dancing… laughing and getting to know each other as they found out who had two left feet or who wasFred Astaire in disguise  of a gangly teenager … Studying about their particular subject that was assigned to them… from making moccasins to apple butter … The kids came up with their own costumes… dressed in the clothing of the period they were learning about… very original… Many posters were made and many stories were told to all the spectators and parents who had come to view all of their hard work… Such a good memory to hold within me and brought to surface when the calendar turns to October, the air starts to cool and the smell of pumpkin pie and apple cider entices you to enjoy those times again…I think I’ll take part in the past as well as the present…
