Blessings Keep Coming!

After the sisters left to go home for Georgia it was so quiet…

Their laughter and sweet voices are so welcomed… On Wednesday we had a visit with the Palliative Care Team… at the VA Hospital…

After being reassured by the at VA Nutritionist and sister-in-law that it would be beneficial… we opted to attend…

We were greeted by five members of the Team…

A Psychologist… a Social Worker… Lead Doctor… Doctor Assistant… and Chaplin…

We were asked about our concerns…

and his well-being…

Thoughts we had… and worries that might be bothering us…

What a question??? YES!… we are all of these things… but, their mannerisms were caring… and they took notes as we talked…

I imagine every time we have to face this issue… it will give us a better understanding…  for better words…

They commented on our “togetherness” in this happening in our lives…

and seemed to be in awe of our openness… with each other…

After 47 years of marriage… and the obstacles… happiness… and love we have shared… It is another hurdle we have to meet head on and get through…

The hardest so far!…

They are available at any time… even without an appointment…

if we have concerns… come to them…

It is always good to have support with close friends/family… but, professionally too!…

We left after Prayer with the Chaplin who I had met a year ago when Bobby’s first cancer arose…

It has rained so much here in Louisville…

We are so glad!…

My two sons… Grandson and Bobby painted woodwork in kitchen/living room yesterday…

Oh… what a difference it made…

The rest looks fine… and with a new kitchen floor… we will feel so much better…

A few more things we want to accomplish… while Bobby has energies…

and with the willing help of my other guys… we will have the house in order…

My sister has been one of my blessings…

She calls… visits… and lifts us up in prayer…

We have always been close… and her and Bobby are like brother/sister…

She brought him a Prayer BlanketOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was blessed by the priest… and has a rosary attached made by a Downs Syndrome girl for her contribution to others…

We are not Catholic… but… God is Savior for all people…

We just live by where God found us…

and titles mean little in HIS eyes…

Bobby was so pleased and it will always be special during these times and later…

He immediately put it across his shoulders as we sat outside…

Thanks Sis!…

My “Least” Favorite Breakfast!…or Maybe My “Favorite”!

Gift…

After eating a can of Mandarin Oranges for breakfast…I saw a question on Facebook… What is your least popular breakfast food?… Now let me see… I have to say I prefer “real” breakfast foods over sweets…You know… like Bacon, Eggs (Sometimes),Fried Potatoes , Sausage Gravy/Biscuits , Omelets (Spanish) with Salsa , sometimes “good” Sausage …but, then when I’m in a sweet mood…Fluffy Pancakes with lots of melted butter and warm syrup , “Belgium”Waffles where the butter oozes down in the little squares and the syrup puddles there also “Good”doughnuts… like crispy on the outside “Apple Fritters” and soft on the inside… My favorite “Take out breakfast” would be a sausage biscuit sometimes … a bacon/cheese biscuit or bagel sometimes (no egg)… a breakfast burrito with mild salsa sometimes… Hot Krispy Cream Doughnuts with milk sometimes… By looking back on my choices … I would have to say cereal and oatmeal  would be my least favorites… I answered the question by writing this blog… because they were never mentioned!… Right now …since I’m watching my intake of calories...the fruit was my choice and oatmeal begins to taste better everyday…“Everything” Bagels (lots of seeds) are right up there on top…with light cream cheese… As you can see…“I LIKE BREAKFAST!”… but, my “real”choices are not so good for me… so I will try to have “them” every once in a while… where I won’t feel deprived… but, fruit , oatmeal, and bagels are going to become my new best friends for breakfast… Any other suggestions?… I would love to hear!

“Cake Cakes” anyone?

My granddaughter, Kennedy…who is 9… loves “cake cakes… That is what she has always called pancakes… She likes them just as much now as she did when she was 1-year-old… Her little brother, Carson and her  stayed over last night … and when they got up I asked, “Are pancakes OK for breakfast?”…of course Kennedy says, “yes!” … and to my surprise Carson did too … I asked , “Would you like a barn, rooster or a hen?” … They kind of looked at me like,”WHAT?”… Then I showed them the new pancake molds I had bought… in those shapes… Carson says, “I want a barn”… and Kennedy says, “I want a rooster”… Carson helped mix up the batter… and then watched as I made them in my skillet…  He was loving it!… He couldn’t wait to eat his “barn”…and my “Cake Cakes” girl ate 3… one of each shape… I told you, “She loves them!”… We all ate pancakes  and for some reason they tasted so good… better than usual… Warm with syrup and melted butter …yum! I have a feeling there will be a request for “Roosters“, “Hens” and “Barns”   from now on… maybe with chocolate chips next time.

“French Toast” Might Help

My sister gave me a new granola type cereal to try that she found …I ate it this morning…not really wanting it…but, it was good!…We are trying to eat better foods, more fiber, less sugar, lower fat, etc. I always fix my husband   ,unless he gets up early and has his cereal…plain corn flakes, is his favorite…I guess you would guess his favorite milkshake flavorplain vanilla…Boring, I say!…but, to each his own…He does love French Toast…He would probably eat it every day…My Mom taught me how to make it…eggs, milk, a little sugar (), beat well and dip bread into the mixture and then fry in butter on both sides until golden brown…Texas Toast is awesome …I have been getting Sugar Free syrup for him since he is diabeticbut, if  I run out of syrup, my Mom also showed me how to make syrup from Brown Sugar, a little water and vanilla…just mix together in a saucepan and heat to a boil…boil just a little longer and when it cools a while it will thicken a little…sometimes my kids would rather have it…warm on pancakes, waffles or French toast…nothing better! Breakfast is an important meal to me…if I eat a little something I will be able to start the day off much better…Now, my favorite breakfast varies…I’ve been known to eat left over chili, left over pizza or a good omelet  if  I want to go traditional…my taste buds do vary…and to me breakfast can be dinner, lunch can be breakfast and dinner may be lunch…so if you came to dinner you would not know what meal to expect…aren’t surprises wonderful!

“MY KIDS!”…

I had to take a young man to eat breakfast every day in the school cafeteria …He was much bigger than me and I was just a little leery of his behaviors…he could turn on you in an instant…I always tried to remain calm, getting whatever he liked to eat that morning from the cafeteria…He ate in silence glancing around all the time…I never knew what to expect…sometimes he smiled and we walked back to class without incident…and sometimes he decided to “go off”  which is the way we described it…His food could go anywhere, on the table, floor or at me…He loved to grab your arm  and  I had fingernail marks on me for days later…I know you are thinking I didn’t  like this child …I did!…I just wondered what I did to cause him to do this…well, after a while you know it’s not you…it’s an imbalance in them…something just triggers this response from him…that’s what is so difficult about these children…When you work with them, you just want to help them, but at times you try to no avail…someone usually came to my aid…the aide needing an aide…funny, huh? I would tell them he will be alright…just try to calm him down and later you would never know he acted like that…I have since wondered if my wonderful French Toast and Homemade Syrup would have started his day off better! We got a male assistant to work with him later on…and he was wonderful…The young man responded much better to a male figure…and we found that to be true a lot…some prefered women and some prefered men… I believe it was usually something in their home life …Anyway, we saw our boy change so much with the care of this male aide…he worked one on one with him and he became his “Boy”!…they played, wrestled, laughed, went out to lunch together and got along really well…we saw this boy at a bowling alley years later and he responded to us with a grin and recognition, trying to talk to us…aren’t surprises wonderful!
