“Over the Door”

Gift…

I was lucky in my finds today… Two new items in their packaging… found at my Unique Thrift Store … I don’t actually go looking for anything in particular… but, always have a mental list of things I need… or could use… and sometimes… just plain “want!”…

My first find was a window mini blind for my back door… Jill… my cat, if you didn’t already know… likes looking out the back door… even to the point of asking us to open it… but, at times… she takes it on herself to open it the best way she can by herself… So, at the bottom of the blind… a few blind strips had been broken… or were a little crunched… Head poking through does that it seems…

It’s not that the blind is expensive…but, just taking the time to shop, and replace…Actually sometimes…it’s just the remembering to buy it!

So, when I saw this one… right size… right color… new… It was mine!

My next item I literally grabbed… Like anyone else wanted it!… was a brand new cover/pad for my Over the Door Ironing Board… I had not been able to find one anywhere and figured I would have to go on-line to order…

You just have to pull it down …

I just love my little ironing board… Actually it is a great length… 3-1/2 feet long X 14 inches across… and is so handy in that it folds up on my bathroom door in my bedroom and when I need it… All I have to do is pull it down… One of my favorite things that has been invented!…

I have had to buy regular size ironing board covers and make them work… This one went on in a breeze… It was made by TIDE… and I will be looking on the internet and seeing if they have them for sale...

And would you believe it matched my bedroom… light blue design… Can’t beat that!…

I say these are little blessings that come my way… so I have to say, “Thank you Jesus!”…

You made my day!

A Vintage Find…

Gift…

OK… I went to a peddler‘s mall today

… I used to have a booth there… I sold my collection of ceramic Kitties(cats) and Puppies(dogs)  … There were planters, salt/pepper shakers, statues, etc. … I also sold Children’s books with a stuffed animal that matched the book… and furniture that I painted with designs

It has changed ownership since I closed my booth…

I browse around… never knowing what might catch my eye

Today I saw a vintage item

I had to feel it look at it for several minutes… check out the price  … decide… “Do I need this???” … No, but I just have to get it!…

I love things that are  … and this fit the description

I had never seen any like it before… Cute as could be… and useful also… although I don’t plan on using it…

I want to display it probably… and I might make some… I believe I can… What a cute gift for my nieces… and friends…

What I found… was a vintage Pot Holder… Actually a set of three in one… White and red material… stitched in blackHand stitched… which is what I love…

Three ladiesBonnets representing their faces… and the skirts are the 3 pot holders that can detach… due to having snaps

Rick Rack decorates their Skirts and Bonnets… In excellent condition… No tears… no stains except a little yellowing of the fabric that is hardly noticeable… and oh… it only cost $2.75… Things are always a little pricier in a peddlers mall than a thrift store… but, they had me!

I might try to soak in some Clorox II… non-bleach … to brighten it up… and then maybe not…

Just had to share my find…

Fast…Fun…Fearless!

Gift…

When I took a friend to the doctor the other day… I was in the waiting room… browsing through whatever magazines they had… I came across a “Family Fun magazine

 …

Seemed pretty good… crafty things you can do with kids and even adults… On page #13… a little girl in a cute top (dress) was pictured and I began to read the topic that had caught my eye…”T-shirt Tunic“…

It was about recycling a T-shirt into a cute tunic type dress for smaller kids or a cute top I thought for my granddaughter… I love ideas… but, I usually have to make them my own in some small way…

I reread the directions, seemed simple enough… but, knowing my memory is not quite what it used to be… I did something I don’t usually do… I tore the page out of the magazine… folded it up and proceeded to put it in my purse… I just acted like it was a normal thing to do… although feeling a little guilty… It was stealing… and it kinda bothered me… but, since there were about 4-5 of the same magazine lying around the room… I did it!… and I’m confessing that I did!… Not sure that clears me of this… but, it’s done…

I want to give credit to the creator of this neat little idea… Nicole Blum… who with the editor of this cute magazine wrote the just released “Improv Sewing : 101 Fast, Fun, and Fearless Projects”… Does this get me off the hook???

The whole idea was to use a T-shirt that needed to be recycled… So I looked through my husbands and my T-shirts… but, to no avail… I then looked at T-shirts at my favorite thrift store… and a bright green one caught my eye… You know how it is… You just know that’s it!…

It seemed big enough without being too big… and you have to know my granddaughter who is 10… just fractured her ankle… so the saying on the shirt was very appropriate …”I’m Just One Big Freaking Ray of Sunshine Aren’t I?  … no swimming…no climbing…no running…no walking… Attitude has set in a little…

Directions:

Spread T-shirt… actually press it flat…

I marked with a ruler and white crayon 3 lines as in photo…

Cut with scissors…

Turn under edges at arms about 1/4″… and press…

Using embroidery floss… I chose bright yellow because of the yellow sunshine and words on front of shirt… and hand-stitch a running stitch with needle… (in and out)…

Turn under front and back neck area… about 1-1/2″ wide… and then stitch the same way as arms…

I chose “Peace Sign” colorful satin ribbon( Kennedy is a little “hippie” at heart)… to run through the pocket that has been made while hemming… just fasten a safety pin to the end of ribbon and work through… draw up neck area a little or adjust when shirt is on… and then tie a cute bow

So easy… so inexpensive…so different… “ONE of a Kind!”…

If Kennedy likes it… I will try another print and color of T-shirt… and make another… Because it was a… FAST… FUN… and FEARLESS Project…

Something OLD…Something BLUE…

Keepsakes…

I love blue/white dishes of most any kind! … I collected them for some time… I wasn’t particular… anything that caught my eye… I have stored most of them now… I went through and picked the ones I couldn’t bear to get rid of… I had plates … cups … saucers… figurines trivets… Well, you name it… I probably had at least one piece… “Blue Willow …”Staffordshire”…”Currier and Ives … “Royal China”… “Flow Blue … I just loved their color… I can’t say I don’t know more about them since I’ve looked them up on EBAY and the internet… but, I’m certainly no “expert”… I find myself often looking at pieces as I go through my thrift stores and peddlar malls… and just have to tear myself away… knowing I have enough…

Well, saying that…

I found a set of Salt/Pepper Shakers the other day …and since the price was so good… I took them home and have decided to use them… They are old… a little discolored from age and use… but I liked them!… They resemble little coffee cups… Of course they are blue/white …and after looking up my purchase of $2.21 … on the internet…I found they are worth between $25.00 – $40.00 depending who is selling them… They are Currier and Ives… having a coach scene on the pepper and a wagon scene on the salt … As I said, “They are a little discolored”…”a little old”… but, I think that makes them more appealing… and besides “I like them!”

“A Remote What?”

Gift…

Oh my!… I never know what I might find at my favorite Thrift Store  … as I have said before, “It is called “Unique” “… a most appropriate name!… I usually look at glassware… decorative items… pictures… really anything that catches my eye! And so the item that did this for me today… well, you would never guess!…It was a “Remote Snake” Brand new in the box  … and my first thought was that my grandson would just love it!… He’s right at the age that being a jokester is his perfect way of expressing his humor … So, being Grandma … I couldn’t resist making his day with this “unique” toy… All it needed were two AA batteries and two AAA batteries … This snake was called a “Banana Boa”… 20″ long… with glowing eyes…and moved forward…backwards…and side to side  …  I was actually impressed with it’s functions… It didn’t like the rough terrain my Grandson wanted to put it on… (it’s got tiny wheels on the bottom)…that makes it slink around… and he wished it liked to go through tall grass … That would be more real and actually scare people!… but, even at that, he was quite satisfied with his “unique” gift… Without me telling him… he turned off both switches to save the batteries… although I provided more  in case he played with it a lot… and then carefully put it back in the box to transport it home… I had went to his sister’s soccer game and he immediately showed it to her when she was finished… I paid less than $3.00 for it… and retail showed it to be running around $35.00… So, “I was quite pleased with my purchase”,  as his Daddy used to say when he bought something he liked… and by the way… Kennedy’s soccer team won  their game!

Weekly Photo Challenge: “Arranged”

My Weekly Photo Challenge contribution… “Arranged” being the topic…

I found this unique black ceramic piece with gold accents, a “Zebra” planter … at a new thrift store I was visiting… I had wanted a few “black” decorative accent pieces… I think black pieces just make a room “POP!”… I took out most of the dried flowers that had been in the planter for many years… and made it more simple and appealing… At least I like it… and since it’s “my space” I can “arrange” it to please me… Don’t you just love that!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual

Gift…

I found this small green vase at the thrift store that I frequent… just had to have it! … Why you ask?… Because it was so “UNUSUAL”…

At first I thought it reminded me of fresh green grass in the early Spring… then, the more I looked at it… it reminded me of the tops of green onions… My first Spring flower will go in it!… It could also be used as a candle holder… Any Spring color of candle would do!… What do you see?

What “Serendipities” Have You Discovered?

Gift…

I have always loved the wordserendipity!… The way it rolled off my tongue… a magical word! … but, to really know what it meant… I couldn’t have told you… A fellow blogger had used the word to describe herself in her blog …or something she enjoys doing… It is a discovery of something fortunate: the accidental discovery of something pleasant, valuable, or useful…  a natural gift for making pleasant, valuable, or useful discoveries by accident… I knew she had described what I felt… Something I like to do… A feeling of pure joy … No wonder I liked that word… It was what I had always enjoyed!… These valuable things that I came upon were people who intrigued me… they were beautiful scenes I came upon while looking out a car window … they were small treasures I uncovered at a thrift store … they were books I read and didn’t want to end… Movies that had me so engrossed I felt I was right there on the screen… it was that neat apple corer that separated my apple into perfect bite size wedges  and that light that comes on automatically when I go down my basement steps… They were my cat that lets me love her , not really knowing love herself… These were the discoveries in life that make us feel so entwined with who we are and where we are going… Some are small things and some are large… They leave you calm, untroubled, without worry, stress or disturbance … This “serendipity” thing is pretty wonderful!

“My Passions”

To decide what to write about in my New Blog for 2012 … it was suggested that I draw a picture representing “ME”... Around “ME” are the things I’m passionate about… So my first drawing looked like this..

.

It consisted of 8 personal ideas about myself … Art, Writing, Home, Friends, Family, Feelings, Success, Thrift Store Discoveries… I was to then expand on that… So as you see it was getting busier!… Consisting of me writing something about each topic

Art– Love painting on old items that need a new life… chairs, small tables, really anything unusual… walls…

Writing-Learning… improvement… connect with all kinds of people… Try to get book idea together…

Home- Happiness came to mind…

Friends– Staying connected…

Family- Togetherness…

Feelings- Wanting to feel better inside and out… be healthier…

Success- Knowing I make a difference…

Thrift Store Discoveries– My relaxation time…the hunt for the unique … but, has to be a bargain!…

Then… How can I connect these???

I would combine the Writing, Art, Thrift Store Finds

I would combine the Friends, Home, Family, Feelings+ Writing

and Success would be combined with all …

The only thing I didn’t actually write down was “God“…(belief)… This is because that’s a “given”… He’s with me in all my ideas, thoughts and actions!…

What a neat concept!… and I do believe it will help me in my endeavors… Now, to start on January 1, 2012… I can’t wait to see what my First Blog will be!

“My Unique Find”

One day as I was browsing my favorite Thrift Store …it is called “Unique”…an appropriate name I think…because I always find a unique item there…I found the sweetest little vase   …It is 3″ h. X 3″ w. … with a small neck not but an inch across… Some of my favorite colors…white, dusty blue and lavender… An abstract pattern that caught my eye…I just had to have it!…I came in and set it in my kitchen window  …where I could admire it every day…I pick some very small flowers out of my yard to put in it… and add a little water… It’s funny how this little piece can add joy to someone’s life…but, it does…The flowers are a miniature Clematis  my niece gave me that climbs my fence, the darker purple Shamrock  I got this summer in Indiana and the spiky purple ones comes from the plant, Liriope  I planted many years ago in my front yard… When you combine all of this together it makes for a wonderful addition to your home…It’s pretty, it’s real and it has a story

My lovely small vase…

“My Kids!”…

I find my stories about my kids very “unique”…they are truthful, funny , sometimes sad ..,but always interesting… These kids came with unique packaging …some were small… some were big…some were a little scarey… some were such loveable bundles … Some came with a whole family… some came with no parents at all… Some came with smiles … some came with the saddest expressions you can ever imagine… They were like finding my little treasures… trying to see in them what made them so special… and each one was definitely wonderful… A little human being  is different than objects though… in that they speak loudly about what has happened to them and what their needs are… They have emotions and desires … They all come needing …wanting something … So as teachers we took them as they were…washed them with kindness … looked them over very carefully for any cracks, scratches or chips… and then began to mold them  into something pretty…something real… something that had a   …and hopefully had a happy ending … We found joy in them and they made a wonderful addition to our never ending home away from home…our classroom
