TUESDAY’S A TO Z CHALLENGE
The letter “V”…

Home Recording

As soon as I read the prompt for the week was the letter “V” from “frizztext”…

I immediately thought of my cousin Vera…
Some “V” words to describe her are…
vivacious… lively; animatedk6543910

vigorous… strong; active vmo0012

venturesome… bold; daring u13543456

variable… diverse  car0191

viable… take care of self  u20665558

vibrant… lively; vigorousk15798830

verbal… in speaking and writingk15245685

versatile… capable of doing many things competently k15902140

vigilant… alert; watchful     k14783181

We have known each other since we were very young…
My first remembrance of her was when we played at her house around 5 years old…
I’m sure we were together sooner than that… but, I actually can’t remember…
I lived in the county… more like a country setting with a big yard… creek and woods…
She lived downtown… on a busy street… with a park nearby
I imagine we both loved the differences…
Kinda like the City Mouse and Country Mouse book…

We got along pretty well… we definitely had different personalities…
Vera more of an action kid… more adventurous I would say…
Me… a coloring book / crayons kid… although I loved outside too…
We continued our cousin relationship off and on until we graduated from High School…
Then… she married… and I was working and dating
She then moved for a while… and when she returned to LouisvilleI had married… and she had re-married after a divorce…
We both had boys… She had one and I had two…
We became more like fast friends during this time…
and did most everything together
Kids played… dinners were eaten… and we talked for hours on the phone…
Then… she moves again…
and our lives were busy with our new families and kids…
Lots happened…
but, some how… we reconnected…
and I really don’t know how that happened…
Maybe it’s a cousin thing
Maybe it’s that we had become more like friends…
and when you are friends… it’s forever!

She still lives out-of-town but,
we now… talk most mornings for about an hour as she travels to her job… and I am getting up to start my day after retiring…
We never tire of each other’s conversations… Sometimes her talking and sometimes it’s all about me…

Husbands ask, “How do you have so much to talk about?”…
We visit a few times a year… and have spent many Christmases together… her and her husband visiting here… because of other family living here also…
I’m glad she is my cousin… but, I’m really glad she is my friend!

Bertha Got Us There!

I have two girl cousins that are my age…

In fact one was born on the same day as me in the same hospital…

k10507809k10507809

That has probably attributed to the bond we have…

The other one is like a good friend… We can talk and share everything… and we do every week-long distance as she drives to and from work k11313815 …

The cousin who shares my birthday 038a9226lives in Illinois 75px-Illinois_in_United_States_svg

The other in Tennessee Tennessee_in_United_States_svg

I’m in the middle in Kentucky 75px-Kentucky_population_map

And that so describes our relationship…

Phyllis and I played together…

Vera and I played together…

Every now and then… we were all three together…

k2148534

Sometimes that “three” just wasn’t a good idea…

We all have such different personalities…

One… unable to make decisions without going over it and over it…

One… has a quick wit and is “fast-moving” in her answers and getting things done…

and then there’s me…

I am the “middle ” ground… because I don’t like confrontation… and I look at both sides …. and hope for middle ground…

I’ve seen both cousins… and the other two hadn’t really visited for so many years…

So Vera came from Tennessee to my house in Kentucky and then we went together to see Phyllis in Illinois…

We all three couldn’t wait to get together…

and Vera kidded, “Can we get along?… Have we matured enough to enjoy the differences in our personalities and what we have become”…

We left early Friday morning… stopping for breakfast  x23081548 and browsing an antiques store for an hour or so…

We arrived through “Bertha” telling us each way to go…”Bertha” being Vera’s GPS  on her phone… We praised Bertha … She got us there right to Phyllis’ door perfectly…

k11632129

We were immediately hugged and kissed by her and her husband…

We immediately were at home in Phyllis’ house…

We looked at old pictures she had retrieved from her stash left by her Mom, Aunts… etc. …

We were treated to a wonderful dinner of roast beef, potatoes/carrots, gravy, corn and cornbread…

Dessert was a Buttery Chess Cake which I will include here:

Chess Cake Bars

Mix Together:

1-box yellow cake mix

1-egg

1-stick melted butter

Press into 13″ X 9″ greased and floured pan

NEXT:

2-beaten eggs

1-teaspoon vanilla

1-box powdered sugar

1-8oz. cream cheese (soft)

Mix and pour over cake mixture

Bake 350 degrees approximately 30-35 minutes

We loved her country home which part is from the 1800’s… They have a small farm of 29 acres…

u19842403

Lee raises sheep… ( used to raise goats)… and had just had some babies mhg0015 …

They have two beautiful ponds of water… and a creek that runs in the back…

After snows and thaws it was pretty muddy…

I did finally make my way back to the sheep and the two dogs that were herding them… One a Border Collie (Blaze)  border_collie_42_1

and one a Anatolian Pyrenees (Buddy)…  polish_tatra_sheepdog_181_0_thumb

Both took their jobs seriously…

We talked and talked… getting to bed very late…

We woke to coffee brewingx11818573 … and after sitting and talking some more…We had lots to say…

Phyllis fixes us sausage gravy, biscuits, chunky applesauce/apricot/strawberry jam…

Were we happy???… YES! k10021200

Later warm orange cinnamon rolls as we relived some more memories…

u15037178

We were going to meet up with another cousin but, with an ailing husband… we decided another time would be best…

Both of her daughter’s work and so unable to see either of them… A little disappointed, but that’s the way with busy lives…

We kidded Phyllis about all of her wonderful collectibles… Three curios with beautiful dishes, gifts from friends and family… and her love of the Kentucky Cardinal Bird (Red Birds) k11796624as she calls them… A whole cabinet was devoted to them…

We kiddingly said, “We should have just come to your house to browse instead of the antique shop we had stopped at”…

So she said, “Feel free to shop”… “for most anything”, she added…

We left with a gift for my sister… a cute mug k9695791

and glass dish for Vera… and a clear glass bowl k5154825 that was her Mother’s for me… What fun!…

Our conversations… jokes… tears… laughter… will be remembered for a long time…

A short visit… but, a fulfilled one…

3. My Two Son’s… so different in make-up and nature… both showing their love of family … having good hearts, a faith foundation, strength to endure and care for others…

4. My Grandchildren… who are my light, my happiness and my loves…

5. My Sister… my sharing person, my get me through the day, my laugh for the day…

6. My Extended Family… of daughter-in-laws, in-laws, nieces, nephews, brother, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, cousins… who make such an outstanding family… with each giving a part of themselves to make our family interesting, funny, awesome, outstanding and mainly loving…

7. My Passing Family… Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, Brother and Sister, Sister-in-laws, Brother-in-laws, Mother-in-law… God has you now… Bless Them Dear Lord …

8. My Friends… so faithful, so kind, so “always there”, sharing their families and friendship as only they can do…

9. My Neighbors… old and new… a friendly wave, a little conversation, sharing thoughts… troubles and joys… enough to keep us a part of their lives…

10. Myself… for being born into a loving family… for being given a talent that I love… for being lead to my Lord… for letting me continue to grow and learn every day… for meeting all kinds of people … for acceptance…for the love shown to me…

Blessings to all this Thanksgiving Day of 2012… and may all remember “their grateful’s” !

If this sounds familiar it was my list from last year…

My “Grateful’s” are still the same…
