“Don’t Just Be Anther Crayon in the Box”…

While walking in a toy store the day before today, I overheard a Crayon Box k2276015with many things to say.

“I don’t like red k1545034!” said Yellow k1545024… And Green k1544896said, “Nor do I! And no one here likes Orangek2411456 , But no one knows quite why.”

“We are a box of crayons k6684207 that really don’t get along,” … said Blue k1545029to all the others. “Something here is wrong!”

Well, I bought that box of crayons k2276015and took it home with me and laid out all the crayons k0463005 so the crayons could all see…

They watched me as I colored with Red k1545034and Blue k1545029and Green k1544896… And Black and White and Orange k2411456and every color in between

They watched as Green k1544896became the grass k3949787 and Blue k1545029became the sky k10158051 … The Yellow sun was shining bright on White clouds drifting… by.

Colors changing as they touched… becoming something new. ..They watched me as I colored …k0366961They watched till I was through…

And when I’d finally finished… I began to walk away… And as I did the Crayon box k6684207 had something more to say…

“I do like Red k1545034!” said the Yellow k1545024and Green k1544896said, “So do I!…  and Blue k1545029, you are terrific!…  So high up in the sky.”

We are a Box of Crayons k2276015… each of us unique, but when we get together the picture is complete…

Opening “New” Things!

Memory…

When I was young my favorite thing was a new box of crayons … I just loved opening that green and gold box of Crayolas  and viewing all of those wonderful colors… All sharpened and standing in straight rows  waiting for me to pick the first one out to use… And the new coloring book… not a page with a crayon mark on it until I touched the pages with color… I love opening that new bar of soap… smelling that fresh scent  and the feel of rubbing it in my hands for the first time… Who likes to open the “New” box of cereal first?… I do!… It’s brand new, fresh and crispy and crunchy as I pour the milk over it in a bowl and take that first bite… I love a new sheet of papernothing on it until I write or type those first words… making it my own… A new pencil sharpened by me for the first time… all pointy with a woody sawdust smell … I like the first bites of a candy bar… opening that wrapper  and seeing all that creamy chocolate with whatever filling lies under it… That first bite just melting in your mouth… Yum!… I like starting a new game… no points… and being the one to make the first move… I like making that first cut with the lawnmower… seeing that straight line of fresh-cut grass  as I make my way around the yard… That first brush stroke on a new project… whether it be canvas or a fresh painted wall … just waiting for me to apply my artistic talents… The first piece of fresh bread out of the wrapper… smelling so good and making a sandwich that just tastes delicious … Popping open a Coke… hearing that fizzy sound and drinking that first sip of bubbly goodness… almost burns!… A new book… not knowing what is in store… how the plot will go… turning the crisp new pages … So as you see I like “new” things…Nothing big… just that new feeling that no one has touched or used it before you… Do you feel the same way?… Just wondering… What is your favorite new thing to open? ... Let me know!

Color Me “Blue”

When I was a little girl I loved coloring books and crayons…When I went to  or to the Dime Store I headed for the coloring books  ……New crayons were just the absolute best thing in the world…and sometimes I got the “Big Box” – 64 I believe …the one with lots of different shades in it…even a crayon sharpener on the back of the box…how neat!…I just loved all the different colors…Certain colors were boy colors and some were girl colors in my mind…in a pack of 8  …girl colors would be yellow, red and orange…boy colors were brown, black, purple, blue, and green…I really liked the color blue…I would color any girl’s hair blue, in a coloring book…why??? who knows???…I didn’t even know about old ladies having “blue hair” until I was much older…I was very particular of my precious books and crayons…I loved to have someone color with me   , but don’t dare break a crayon…I wanted them kept like brand new as long as I could …of course I would say, “that’s OK”…if someone broke one, but inside I hated it!…seems silly to some people I know, but they were special to me…like other things are special to them…one time I hid my crayons where no one could use them…sounds so selfish now…but, I was paid back for doing it…I had set them in the window sill behind the curtain   in the living room…well, it was hot summer  time, no air conditioning  and those windows got really hot with that sun beating down on them…when I went to get my lovely crayons to use them…they were melted   in one big lump…I almost cried…I remember showing them to my Mother  …and I’m sure she knew how I felt by the look on my face…she said, “I’ll buy you some more as soon as we get out to a store”…I loved her for that…because I knew she understood…and that has always been a great childhood memory of mine…and a lesson learned!

“MY KIDS”…

One of the items on the school supply list   was crayons   …thin ones, big ones, 8 pack, 24 pack or bigger…we didn’t care…but, we were always using them…what an invention!   …of course we used them to color pages   with…circle answers with , put a check mark with, draw with   …most of the kids had their own box, that usually got taken out of their original box and put in their pencil box…it was so much easier to get out of there…of course you always had a child that had to keep them in the original box…but, this was usually a child that kept all of his supplies neat and orderly…like I did when I was young, Ha, ha! …There were always some students that never brought any supplies to school…for them,we had a big box of assorted crayons we bought or the school supplied…after a few months with so many using them, they became broken and some crayons always got used up quicker than others…like black, yellow and red…I guess a lot of things called for the use of  those colors…so we would replenish them…one of our students loved peeling his crayons   …that meant every free second he had he was taking off the paper that covered his or our crayons…this would leave small bits of crayon wrappers     every day on the floor surrounding his desk…and we would have to have him pick them up every day…this never changed for the 5-6 years we had him…only it seems that I remember the little pieces of paper ending up in his pencil box along with the peeled crayons…What a mess!  but, he didn’t have to pick them up off the floor after that…we did teach him something …a lesson learned!
