“I Like Them A Little Bit!”

Gift…

Cup Cake Day!… Not a sweet in the house…That’s a No- No around here… I remembered I had bought chocolate cake mix and frosting for my grandkids to make cupcakes the other night…but, we were so busy and decided on ice cream making… so I still had the ingredients… I mixed up the batter and found I only had 12 cupcake papers

… That’s OK… I’ll make them + a small 8″ x 8″ small square cake… It will be eaten…no matter what shape!… I saved me two plain chocolate cupcakes… I’m not too big on frosting… but, a warm chocolate cupcake… YUM!… I had bought white fluffy frosting in a can

… I already had a basketful of sprinkles… every color you can imagine…

You can tell… I’m a Grandma… I looked them over and decided on the Pastel Rainbow Colored Sugar Crystals… Just a little to make them pretty…

Already … a few are missing… Like I said, “My guys love sweets”… and I guess I can say, “I like them a little bit!”… Ha, ha!

Candy Corn Cravings!

I’ve decided on what my next blog will be… but, it’s a “Secret!” ... I will begin it on January 1, 2012… Maybe even a new title since “My First Blog 2011” will be obsolete …no more 2011… I’m really excited , now that I have thought of it… I needed that… something to be excited about… Great!

Now, I will tell you what else I’ve been thinking about

Candy Corn… One of my favorites during the Fall months…especially Halloween time! … I love the original… It seems to taste different, although the ingredients are the same… “Original” meaning the Yellow, Orange and White tipped kernels … Love those little imitation look-alike ears of corn… Because that’s what they represent… Introduced back in 1880’s by George Renningen by the Wunderle Candy Co. in Philadelphia… Now called Brach’s ... Farming of course was the main way of making a living …so this candy was geared toward this customer, the farmer and his family … Made of sugar, corn syrup, coloring and binders…I found that “binders” are like marshmallow cream or calcium acetate (food additive) for stabilizationMakes them creamy! … The colors of yellow, orange and white were chosen because of the closeness in color to an actual corn kernel … brighter of course to appeal to the public’s eye… Originally made by hand  … and now automation has mechanized the process … Another company, Goelitz Confections in Cincinnati started making Candy Corn in 1898…now called the Jelly Belly Co.” … I always seem to taste honey when I’m eating this neat candy… must be the flavoring and along with a bowl of salty popcorn …yum!… Other colors have emerged…brown and orange for Thanksgiving green and red for Christmas pink and red for Valentine’s Day and Easter comes in different pastels … A low-fat candy…3.5 calories per kernel, 9000 tons ( 20 million pounds) made annually…I believe I will buy me a bag today… I need to help them out… maybe add a pound or two to their statistics… and being low-fat , won’t add to my pounds… That would be scary! … even if it wasn’t Halloween!

“My Kids!”…
Oh No!… Halloween was here and our Patriot Bake Shop was in full force… Jack-o-lantern Cakes, Cupcakes , Brownies... Everyone giving us orders for all of their parties… and treats for the students… Our cakes were so cute with triangular eyes and noses jagged cute smiles a green stem  with curly leaf hair… of course all edible made from cake and frosting… Our cupcakes were decorated with sprinkles of orange, purple, brown and yellow with Candy Corn accenting each one… The brownies were either plain or chocolate frosted and also an addition of a Candy Corn atop each square… Candy Corn also became teeth for our Jack-o-lantern cakes at times… The trick was to keep little fingers out of the bowl and several adult ones also… Oh what fun!… If I had known the recipe for Candy Corn  as I do now…we would have had to try it… along with the cute Candy Corn Cookies  I’ve read about… I seem to be on the look out for new crafts and recipes still… can’t take the teacher out of me yet!

“Likeable Cupcakes”

I’ve made another skate cake…it gets easier every time…this time for my Granddaughter, Kennedy…9 years old…she had to wait for her Roller Skating Birthday Party … “Derby Day” is around her birth date …but, she happily and cheerfully waits for her time…I didn’t hear any complaining…Her friends from school will attend along with family and other friends…I do not skate!…have done it but, I don’t think I’m as agile as I use to be and do not want any broken bones …I remember falling a lot!…So my contribution is to make and bring “The Skate Cake” actually cupcakes  …made to look like a cake…”Cupcakeshave really become popular …many new “Cupcake” shops …”The Cupcake Wars” on TV…”Cupcakes” served with beer and wine …who knew??? They are fun!…and can be made so versatile…to really fit any occasion…I got an idea this morning…I took pictures of the “Skate Cakes” I have made and attached them to a little brochure I come up with on the computer…I’ll see if the Skating Rink will hang it up…maybe I’ll get a few orders…who knows…there’s always kids wanting to have skating parties…and to save that one step for busy Moms  … It might just take off… If so, I might even put on those skates  and try going around that rink at least once…”Roller Skates here I come!

“My Kids”…

I visited my old classroom yesterday…they asked me to help with their graduation luncheon plans…”Of course I will!”, I said …I had been a little homesick to see everyone anyway…We sat in the Bake Shop to talk over some needed items…a shopping list pictures , the cake , gifts  and certificates …I really got my feet wet  as they say when we opened our little Bake Shop with our special ed students so many years ago…It was a money raiser pre-vocational training …math skills and daily living skills…Our “Patriot Bake Shop”was a success!…Many orders started coming in…Cookies , cakes, brownies and “Cupcakes”  …I really got started decorating cakes at that time…art skills of course helped…I always wished I had taken lessons to really learn the techniques of decorating…basically I just winged it…and everyone seemed to love it…Not your usual way but, it worked…I reminisced as I left …could the skills I learned in that little bake shop carry over to the roller skate cake I was to make…”I think they did!”
