I Used Paas Dye…

I picked up a package of Paas Easter Egg Dye … a little kit… at the thrift store the other day…

Why not!… it was marked $1.00 on the package as the original price and then the store had marked it to their price of 68 cents

I’ll take it!…

The thrift store has more bunnies… Easter decorations… grass and baskets… of every shape… and even clothes to dress up the little ones…

and they were quite busy!…

I bought a little bunny too… He’s sitting on my bathroom shelf

I decided I could wait no longer to dye the eggs… so after making some sugar cookies

My guys love their sweets…

I boiled about a dozen eggs

Just enough to say I did it and to get that urge out of my system…

There were 5 colored tablets in the kit… pink, blue, orange, green and yellow with a little wire egg holder…

plus a few colorful cardboard egg holders and a matching game of Easter characters… I was feeling like a kid again…

Simple pleasures!…

I read where just vinegar and the tablets in a cup k0996563 would make the brightest colors… lemon juice would make medium colors… and water for pastels

I opted for the brightest… only using vinegar!… u17660117

They turned out quite bright and pretty… and I managed to keep my fingers pretty clean…

Not dyeing them too much!

I read about these Paas dyes… and a gentleman named William Townsley… who was a druggist… invented these special egg coloring dyes around 125+ years ago…

He renamed the company paas-logo after the Pennsylvania Dutch word Passen which was used for Easter

Quite interesting… that after 60+ years… I have learned that tidbit…

I hope you have dyed a few eggs… It is quite fun! cottonHeader2

Making Chocolate Bunnies…

Whatever Holiday comes… I look for something new to make… a new dessert… a new decoration k12812912 … a new card to send… a unique gift…

I found this Easter Bunny Mold sometime last summer at the thrift store… There was only one… but, I knew from making candies in our little Bake Shop at school that the candies would set up pretty quick when put in the freezer… and should pop right out with a little twist of the mold…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, I was right!… I only bought one bag of the candy chips that were microwavable… They melted quickly… In about an hour I had 24 cute chocolate bunnies…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I figured if they did as good as I thought… I might buy some more candy chips… Maybe yellowMNM6170_small or pinkMNM6160_medium time permitting…

HOP Over to See My “Major Award”

Memory…

Do you remember in the movie A Christmas Story   when Mr Parker…Ralphie’s Dad… won a “Major Award”… At least that is what he called it!

…and since then… I have heard that phrase used for anything that someone gets as a prize, present, etc. … Mr. Parker said he used “mind power” to win his award… I doubt anything but, “luck” has anything to do with winning… but, it makes you wonder on the odds doesn’t it? …

Well, yesterday the postman came ringing my door bell… handing me a box…  I thought it was some engraved pencils I had ordered from Oriental Express for my TOPS group… but, lo and behold!…I love saying that!… It was for me!… I opened the box to find I had won a “Major Award”!… It was sent priority mail costing $10.85and I saw it was from Insight… my cable/internet/phone company… I couldn’t imagine what it was!… and to my surprise a little Bunny pops his head out… Oh, the memory comes in at me as I say, “I’ve won a Major Award!”…

I had entered my name in a contest in hopes of winning a stuffed bunny from the movie called HOP … Universal Studios Home Entertainment brought this movie out on April 1, 2011 in time for Easter… Of course all of the kiddos flocked to see it!… bringing in $183,953,723.00… I had totally forgot about it… seeing as I hardly ever win anything…”Once in a blue moon” as they say…

I couldn’t help be a little excited!… It’s not every day that someone wins a “Major Award”… especially me!… He is kind of cute … and will probably go to my granddaughter, Kennedy… She’s still at the age of liking stuffed animals… The tag on him said he cost $18.00… Almost as much to ship him as his worth… This will be a cute memory to relate later in years… and I haven’t even seen the movie!

“Making Bunnies”

Gift…

Tomorrow is Easter … I had wished all week that my Grandkids would come over and decorate eggs  with me… I got my wish!… Mom and Dad wanted to go out to eat with some friends …so my wish was granted!… I can only show the finished product… quite pretty… because we were so busy I forgot to take pictures during the process…. I had boiled the eggs  earlier… so they were ready… The kids put the tablets of color in 6 glasses… green, red, blue, orange, purple and yellow… I added vinegar and cold water and they stirred…  and then the dipping began… green and orange for Carson… purple and pinks for Kennedy… Being a girl… she tried to dye her’s with two colors and added stickers… Carson just prefers bright plain colors… Both are good at it!… We placed them on my “Rabbit Egg Holder” and then a walk to Wal-Mart on the path through the woods for a treat… Back at home… I proceeded to help Carson with a project for school… and then made Bunnies   out of Croissants, Peanut Butter Cups, Pink and White Marshmallows and tiny Reese’s Pieces for eyes… Quite easy and so cute… Don’t have to be perfect to make you smile when you see them… I had made place cards  for the dinner table tomorrow… The kids probably would have liked to help with that… but, I had already made them so they will have a surprise tomorrow… What a joy I feel when they are around… Happiness abounds!

Easter Bunny… Where Did You Hide It This Time?

Memory…

I just love to hear the chit-chat about the Easter Bunny coming… I remember getting up on Easter Sunday morning  … and beginning my hunt for my basket… sometimes homemade… and sometimes a little fancier … Now I know it as “store-bought”… I didn’t know the difference!… The “Easter Bunny”  had brought it to my house and hid it for me to find… I wasn’t really a big candy eater… jellybeans  were fine with me…but, usually there was a chocolate bunny with a name like “Hoppy” …or “Mopsy”…”Flopsy” or “Peter Cottontail“…Oh no!…I think that’s the name of the bunnies that got into Mr. McGregor’s garden in the story my Mom told me over and over … My grandchildren will get a small basket from us… Grandma and Poppy… Cute crocheted Bunny Baskets for the girls … I have had them since last season… because as you know I’m quite thrifty… and plan ahead… Carson’s is a small bucket with the cartoon characters of “Cars” on it … Some candy… this time… pastel M&M’sHair accessories and jewelery for the girls and games and a car for Carson… Since I always received a chocolate Bunny… they will be treated to the same… Theirs will be a Chocolate Bunny Sucker …so cute!…I hope they will be surprised…

Our friend, “Bun”!

 A Memory…

I probably should wait until Easter for this Blog… but, my Granddaughter Kennedy came over to spend the night… and I couldn’t resist taking a picture of her and her best friend she brought with her… Actually she brings her every time… and if not… we have had to meet my son half way to pick her up… She is not your typical friendlong-lasting for sure…but, she’s a little worn around the edges… She has long ears which at one time stood up but, now a little droopy… She was once a pretty pink color and fuzzy soft… Now, barely pink and her hair is no longer as cuddly… She lost her bow she wore around her neck many years ago… She has had many holes and been patched many times… She has had several new noses, stuffed here and there and just recently a new tail… … Her name is “Bun”…  short for Bunny… She has been in the family for about 9 years… but she is definitely Kennedy’s… She loves Bun with all of her heart!… Hugging her tight and sleeping with her head on her every night… Bun has sat at my kitchen table …slept in my bed ... and been hugged and kissed every time she has visited … We all have grown to love her!… but, never as much as Kennedy!

“Squeals of Delight!”

I’ve figured out something about Holidays …Without children ...they just aren’t as much fun!… The twinkle we see in the eyes of children … How their smiles just emerge and light their faces … The excitement in their voices… That magical giggle that radiates from their throats … That unreserved motion in their bodies… as if they just can’t be still … The joy as they express without any reservations as to what they expect …be it a certain costume at Halloween… “I’m going to be a …!” , as they demonstrate the sounds or look of the creature they want to be…  be it a dessert of Thanksgiving… “I just love pumpkin pie with cool whip”!  … as they almost lick their lips telling you about it… be it a special toy they’ve been looking at in the Christmas Catalog … because if you’re a good little girl or boy… Santa   will bring you what you have wished for… Children jump and hop almost as much as the Easter Bunny in anticipation of finding an Easter Basket full of candies or maybe a stuffed fuzzy bunny to snuggle up to … There will be hearts drawn on everything… pink and red …with “I LOVE YOU!”   printed on most of them… Valentine’s made from cut out red or pink construction paper with white doilies glued behind them… The prettiest things they have ever seen as their hands clap and touch their faces… Leprechauns have nothing on kids as they dance a jig and make green shamrocks for good luck… St.Patrick’s Day is indeed magical to them!… Summer vacation brings squeals of happiness as they jump into the swimming pool for the first time  … shivering, but, never admitting they are cold… Even that first day of school… shopping for those new pencils, red, green and blue folders and colorful crayons just waiting to be opened and used for the first time… It seems if we would look at children…we would realize their joy can always remain within us … Just smile, giggle, dance , shiver, clap, hop, make something pretty and even squeal with delight

It may be contagious!

“My Kids!”…
It started in August… first day of school… Happy faces for the most part … getting off the school buses… in our case, the little buses … for Special Ed kids … As soon as you saw them, you had to smileso sweet… so friendly… so chatty…and so enthused to be at school…Here they would busy, go places and get lots of attention!… so they were excited!… It spilled over onto us… Of course within about two months… Halloween arrived… we would dress in costumes… make Jack-o-lantern cakes in our Bake Shop and have games and activities … They loved it! … Showing it by wanting us to paint their faces, talk of costumes and pumpkin patch field trips… enjoyed by all!… Thanksgiving was a busy time in our Bake Shop…with Pumpkin and Pecan pies being baked…and the smells wafting through the halls …Talk of turkeys and eating dinner at their Grandparents…What a joy watching them describe what they did… Christmas of course was time for a break…but, not before decorating a tree , talking of all the ways different people celebrated this special time, musical concerts… and our Holiday Bazaar… The anticipation of being off from school and a visit from Santa … A winter time delight … Valentine’s Day brought out the pink, red and white construction paper with heart-shaped patterns and decorations… Small Conversation Heart shaped candies  were found everywhere…reading what each one said… The fun as they expressed their like for a certain student…very typical!… March brought out the Leprechaun’s and green shamrockspots of gold were talked bout and rainbow’s  drawn on every piece of paper they could find… We discussed how the colors of the rainbow were called, ROY G BIVred, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet and we taught it like it was new for all of us…. April brought Spring, the Easter Bunny and candy being brought to school and found in their desks… just hoping no melted Bunnies would be found… School ended with the anticipation of summer and fun-filled, sunny days… Smiles becoming more contagious as we all were ready for a break… A few squeals of delight could be heard as students and teachers left at that time I told you it could be contagious!

“Easter”…Perhaps, a time to find joy!

Next Sunday is Easter …my first thoughts are …go to church, Jesus’ Crucifixion, the Easter Bunny, my Grandkids, Easter Candy/Gifts, Ham for Dinner, New Clothes, Family…My first thoughts really go back many years ago when I was young…We had to have a new outfit, new shoes, maybe a pretty Easter hat…I liked going to Church on Easter…At least on that one day…more people attended church than usual…What’s was the reason?…To show off those new clothes and accessories?…Perhaps…Because somebody asked them to go with them?…Perhaps…Maybe it’s the Easter Egg Hunt for the children?…Perhaps…Maybe it’s the thought if they went it would take care of all those days they didn’t?…Perhaps…I have to admit I love that the kids and even the adults get all dressed up…and go to church…I love that someone finally said yes, and went with a friend that had been asking them for a long time…I love watching the little kids all dressed up in their best running like crazy all over the lawn looking for those hidden eggs  …Some carrying a pretty Easter Basket…some carrying a “Kroger” bag…but, so enthused…laughing, giggling…trying to get as many of those colored eggs as possible …Possibbly there is a little guilt …something inside of them telling them they should be going to church, but haven’t…For whatever reason a person has …to go to church on this Special Day…I think it is wonderful!…While those kids are sitting with their parents fidgeting from eating too much candy…while those parents are sitting in their best looking all around at others …while those people who haven’t been in a church for a while sit a little nervously watching and listening to those around them…, while those people sit with friends that took the time to extend an invitation …Maybe this is the time at least one of these people will open their heart to God a vulnerable time …a time to make a decision that will change their life forever…they might hear just the right words that will give them an everlasting joy …So, yes…I love all of the hoop la about Easter…It makes me happy to know that God is watching all of this and knows the real reason we are there…Could it be …He led us there?Perhaps!

“My Kids!”

When Easter came in the Spring…our kids were interested in Easter Egg Hunts  , the Easter Bunny, candy, dying hard-boiled eggs , Easter Baskets or maybe making a pretty card for someone…That’s OK…they are children and they had disabilities…Some had never dyed eggs…what an experience…the thought of boiling an egg …dipping it in bright-colored dye …the magic of the pretty color it became…trying not break them…some wanting to eat them right away and others saving them to take home and show off their handiwork…We did have egg hunts at one time…outside if pretty, hiding them behind trees and bushes , in cracks of the sidewalk, in tall grassy areas , just about anywhere we could find…a prize for the one finding the most …making sure all received some of the eggs…We made Easter baskets of paper…I remember a chick pattern especially…fillling them with Easter grass …The kids would color and staple and be so impressed by how they would hold a few jelly beans  and chocolate rabbits…and then they got to take them home…We had cards to make that when folded they opened to reveal a Happy Rabbit…But of all the things our students did during this Special time was to make Easter Bunny Cakes …Our little Bake Shop first made them many years ago…We made special boxes lined with pretty cellophane paper, baked cakes, cut out the ears, bow ties and heads from the cake circles, frosted and decorated them with fluffy white coconut , assorted colored jelly bean bow ties, noses and eyes…pink tinted coconut for the inside of their long ears…and cute red whiskers from red vine chewy string candies…We never knew which one was the cutest!…We would line them up in assembly line fashion…with a little girl in our class, doing as good as any adult in decorating them…at these times our kid’s talents really showed…I’m not sure how many jelly beans were eaten during these times…I know lots disappeared …We took orders for these cakes  and made over 25 that first time…and every year after we were asked, “Are you going to make “Bunny”cakes?”…and we said “perhaps” …as we  took their order…
