Easter Egg Fillings

I asked Mel if the kids were going to do an Easter Egg Hunt?… k0516983

They are getting to be 10 and almost 13 years old…

so I was wondering if they thought they were too big!…

“Yes!”, she said…

“I thought we would… kinda refraining from a lot of candy…

but, want to have some… and they love this part of our day”…

Since I was left with the plastic eggs from Easters at my house…

I told her, “I’ll fill what I have”…

I really don’t think she understood

I guess my last event was Easterk12882726 … with the Grandkids and family… so I thought I would share a few photos tonight…

Sharing with Dad all that they had found…

I Used Paas Dye…

I picked up a package of Paas Easter Egg Dye … a little kit… at the thrift store the other day…

Why not!… it was marked $1.00 on the package as the original price and then the store had marked it to their price of 68 cents

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ll take it!…

The thrift store has more bunnies… Easter decorations… grass and baskets… of every shape… and even clothes to dress up the little ones…

and they were quite busy!…

I bought a little bunny too… He’s sitting on my bathroom shelf

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I decided I could wait no longer to dye the eggs… so after making some sugar cookies

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My guys love their sweets…

I boiled about a dozen eggs

Just enough to say I did it and to get that urge out of my system…

There were 5 colored tablets in the kit… pink, blue, orange, green and yellow with a little wire egg holder…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

plus a few colorful cardboard egg holders and a matching game of Easter characters… I was feeling like a kid again…

Simple pleasures!…

I read where just vinegar and the tablets in a cup k0996563 would make the brightest colors… lemon juice would make medium colors… and water for pastels

I opted for the brightest… only using vinegar!… u17660117

They turned out quite bright and pretty… and I managed to keep my fingers pretty clean…

Not dyeing them too much!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I read about these Paas dyes… and a gentleman named William Townsley… who was a druggist… invented these special egg coloring dyes around 125+ years ago…

He renamed the company paas-logo after the Pennsylvania Dutch word Passen which was used for Easter

Quite interesting… that after 60+ years… I have learned that tidbit…

I hope you have dyed a few eggs… It is quite fun! cottonHeader2

I’m ready to dye Easter eggsk0036029k5517328

So, I decided to keep my spirit of Easter going by filling the plastic eggs for the Grandkids to hunt on Easter Day…

I was hoping for pretty weather k5876594 … but, the forecast says “rain”k0334307

I never put plans on hold… because weather can change in a week…

We save a big bag of plastic eggs to reuse every year…

I ended up with some and I think my daughter-in-law has some…

I love their bright colors… Some are small and some a big…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOur bag of colored plastic eggs we saved from years past … ready to fill…

I love watching the kids running around the yardk5964598 … looking here and there… down by the fence… near the tree trunks… in the grass… near the deck…

They fill their baskets k12006141or bags not stopping to look inside the colorful eggs until all of them  are found… Then, they dump them all out and count how many they have found…

This year since they are older… 8 and 11… I put inside coins

“Hard Boiled Eggs…So Beautiful!”

I decorated Easter Eggs  yesterday…I guess I’ve decorated hard-boiled eggs at Easter for as long as I can remember …Of course it started with my Mom showing us how…She would boil a big pot of white shelled eggs …they had to be white to absorb the color into the shells…There are brown eggs   but, they just won’t do…After they were cooled and wiped dry…she would get the different colors made …it was made of  food coloring we usually had in the cabinet…probably bought from the “Watkins Man” at times…this was a salesman that came door to door selling “Watkins” products…usually spices, flavorings and such…and I still use it now if I don’t get a kit from the store…We made yellow, red, blue, green, and purple by mixing red and blue… and orange by mixing the red and yellow…It was so neat watching the colors appear in the cups of hot water  after putting a few drops of coloring in each cup…Then Mom would add a little vinegar …she said, “It made the colors brighter  and the egg would absorb the color better” …The cup would have to be fairly deep for the water to cover the eggs…My favorite color was Blue…which has been all my life…We dipped the eggs in and waited what seemed forever…we couldn’t wait for the eggs to be scooped out of the colored water and see the color they had become…It was magical! My Mom also showed us how to use a white crayon  to write names on the eggs or draw designs …What fun!…Sometimes we dipped half of an egg in one color and then the other half into another colorWe were so talented!…We would sit them in an empty egg carton  or on a towel to dry…I didn’t really like to eat them…just create them!…We laid them in a pretty bowl or basket with colored cellophane shredded paper surrounding them…Late in my younger years “The Magical Kit” for coloring eggs appeared…It had little pill like colors   to dissolve in the hot water …a wire egg dipper  to bring the egg up out of the colored water…a few stickers…a few punch outs to surround the eggs when colored for display…I loved the stencil type stamps that you put on the egg and put water on with a damp cloth or sponge and the little pictures would appear…Baby chicks, crosses, easter lilies, bunnies, baskets or special words like “Happy Easter” also inside this wonderful kit was a wax crayon for writing on the eggs…You mean to tell me that a crayon is made of wax?…and the color won’t dye where the wax is?…What do you know!…I’ve decorated eggs with my two sons as they were growing up…neighbors kids, my own Grandchildren and “My Kid’s” at school…Yesterday the kit I had bought at the Thrift Store for forty cents was a sponge on kind of coloring…quite different…and very pretty…my husband told me so…if my Grandkids can’t make it over I just do it myself…but, I still enjoy it…If able I’ll probably dye hard-boiled eggs  for the rest of my life…They are always enjoyed by whoever sees them!

“My Kids!”…

I started boiling eggs and decorating them with my kids at school probably the first year I worked…some had never had the experience…some had only watched others do it…but, our class was a hands on  learning class…so they had to at least try to be able to get the eggs…and almost all of them couldn’t wait!…We had them put the eggs in a big pot of water…telling them to be careful not to drop them in…be gentle…we didn’t want scrambled eggs  to color…After they boiled and were cooled…we let each dry their eggs with a paper towel…We let them use either the wire dipper, a spoon or their hands to put the eggs in the colored water…by then cold water tablets had been invented…I loved that!…now no chances of getting burned …They were as impatient  as I was when I was small…but, when they saw the results they were elated! Some had written their name on their eggs …and no one better get their egg…Some found it quite hard writing with an invisible wax crayon…since you cannot see the wax as you are using it …so some surprises  were found after coloring…a little crooked…not written hard enough to show up…or not where they thought it would be…but, in general a wonderful experience! We placed them in baggies with their name on them…to take home…Some would say, “Can I make my brother or sister one?”…”Can I eat mine now?”  …Can I have any extras?”…”My Mom is going to love them!”…So, as you can see…the egg dyeing experience  will be enjoyed by whoever sees or does it!

“Easter”…Perhaps, a time to find joy!

Next Sunday is Easter …my first thoughts are …go to church, Jesus’ Crucifixion, the Easter Bunny, my Grandkids, Easter Candy/Gifts, Ham for Dinner, New Clothes, Family…My first thoughts really go back many years ago when I was young…We had to have a new outfit, new shoes, maybe a pretty Easter hat…I liked going to Church on Easter…At least on that one day…more people attended church than usual…What’s was the reason?…To show off those new clothes and accessories?…Perhaps…Because somebody asked them to go with them?…Perhaps…Maybe it’s the Easter Egg Hunt for the children?…Perhaps…Maybe it’s the thought if they went it would take care of all those days they didn’t?…Perhaps…I have to admit I love that the kids and even the adults get all dressed up…and go to church…I love that someone finally said yes, and went with a friend that had been asking them for a long time…I love watching the little kids all dressed up in their best running like crazy all over the lawn looking for those hidden eggs  …Some carrying a pretty Easter Basket…some carrying a “Kroger” bag…but, so enthused…laughing, giggling…trying to get as many of those colored eggs as possible …Possibbly there is a little guilt …something inside of them telling them they should be going to church, but haven’t…For whatever reason a person has …to go to church on this Special Day…I think it is wonderful!…While those kids are sitting with their parents fidgeting from eating too much candy…while those parents are sitting in their best looking all around at others …while those people who haven’t been in a church for a while sit a little nervously watching and listening to those around them…, while those people sit with friends that took the time to extend an invitation …Maybe this is the time at least one of these people will open their heart to God a vulnerable time …a time to make a decision that will change their life forever…they might hear just the right words that will give them an everlasting joy …So, yes…I love all of the hoop la about Easter…It makes me happy to know that God is watching all of this and knows the real reason we are there…Could it be …He led us there?Perhaps!

“My Kids!”

When Easter came in the Spring…our kids were interested in Easter Egg Hunts  , the Easter Bunny, candy, dying hard-boiled eggs , Easter Baskets or maybe making a pretty card for someone…That’s OK…they are children and they had disabilities…Some had never dyed eggs…what an experience…the thought of boiling an egg …dipping it in bright-colored dye …the magic of the pretty color it became…trying not break them…some wanting to eat them right away and others saving them to take home and show off their handiwork…We did have egg hunts at one time…outside if pretty, hiding them behind trees and bushes , in cracks of the sidewalk, in tall grassy areas , just about anywhere we could find…a prize for the one finding the most …making sure all received some of the eggs…We made Easter baskets of paper…I remember a chick pattern especially…fillling them with Easter grass …The kids would color and staple and be so impressed by how they would hold a few jelly beans  and chocolate rabbits…and then they got to take them home…We had cards to make that when folded they opened to reveal a Happy Rabbit…But of all the things our students did during this Special time was to make Easter Bunny Cakes …Our little Bake Shop first made them many years ago…We made special boxes lined with pretty cellophane paper, baked cakes, cut out the ears, bow ties and heads from the cake circles, frosted and decorated them with fluffy white coconut , assorted colored jelly bean bow ties, noses and eyes…pink tinted coconut for the inside of their long ears…and cute red whiskers from red vine chewy string candies…We never knew which one was the cutest!…We would line them up in assembly line fashion…with a little girl in our class, doing as good as any adult in decorating them…at these times our kid’s talents really showed…I’m not sure how many jelly beans were eaten during these times…I know lots disappeared …We took orders for these cakes  and made over 25 that first time…and every year after we were asked, “Are you going to make “Bunny”cakes?”…and we said “perhaps” …as we  took their order…
