A Metamorphasus

Memory…

I kiddingly put on  … that I had not received one phone call all day last Sunday…

My niece calls tonight and tells me the time… date … and that she was calling … where I would not go the day without a phone call

Too funny!… I just loved that!…

We used to have so much company when we were younger… somebody dropping by all of the time  …

When my Mom lived with us for 5 years… I had 2-3 people… sometimes more… in my house every day

Brothers… sisters… nieces… nephews… friends and relatives…

I was always running out of coffee … or soft drinks

My brother and a niece would sometimes even bring me a goody bag with coffee or drinks in it…

I tried to have some kind of cookie/snack to serve when people dropped in…

I was thankful for the dishwasher … always had a sink full of cups/glasses…

Now, I’m not complaining… I loved every minute of it!…

I was so glad they came…

For my Mom’s sake

That’s why I miss it now!

Sometimes we sat at my kitchen table and talked  … and then sometimes whoever was visiting went back to Mom’s room where she could hear better… Her hearing was getting bad… and too much racket and talking was just garbled noise  … as she called it…

When Mom went to the nursing home after she fell and broke her hip… I didn’t realize how our visitors dwindled… I was at the nursing home every other night after working every day…

So it seems… that was where all of my visitors went too… to the nursing home to see Mom

This lasted for 3 years…

After Mom passed… It was quite lonely … No Mom to visit and take care of… Not having to be at the nursing home every other night and days when I was off from work…

I had to regroup… Giving my time back to my husband and son who lives with us… I don’t believe I realized how much they had missed me… or I them!…

We had to come together as a family unit again…

Visitors completely stopped… Making me wonder… if it was just because of Mom… that they came…

Maybe so…

This kind of hurt for a while … but, all things pass

I have made my husband my priority and my son who lives with us…

They are who greet me … talk to me… make me laugh… and share everyday happenings with me..

My other son is there too… but, living in a different county doesn’t help the visiting very much…

I have 3 beautiful Grandchildren  … and I try to have them overnight a couple of times a month… What with school and after school activities… that’s not so easy…

After my life went through this metamorphosis … Because that’s how it felt… A complete change in how I did things… how I thought about things… and how I felt about things…

A caterpillar into a butterflyis how it seemed…

Turning into this new person… having to make my own entertainment… having to make the phone calls to keep in touch … preparing goodies just for the three of us … loving my home more

I’m so happy when my few people who actually care to keep in touch with me…  pick up their phone and dial my number and say hi!… how are ya doing?… I know they sincerely want to hear…

And it has become enough

My house is peacefulquiet most of the time…

Actually a great place to visit  Nice yard to sit in… I would fix a drink or snack

They don’t know what they are missing!…

“Show By Example…Will Never Be Forgotten!”

Gift…

I just talked to my daughter-in-law… she wanted to know if I remembered I was having my grandson tonight?… uhhhh?… I hate to say it, “I had forgotten!”  … not a big deal… I’ll take my grandkids anytime I can… I couldn’t believe a week had passed… I had him last Friday  night… Mom and Dad both having to work… and had promised I’d have him this Friday too… Both working again…

This time I will have Carson

and his big sister, Kennedy

… Great!… Love seeing them both… I say, “They can spend the night if they want”  … Sometimes they do and sometimes they have other plans… I’ve learned to understand that they are growing up and have friends they like being with…

Last week Carson couldn’t spend the night because he had a parade the next day… A parade with his fellow football players … all of the teams riding in trucks  and walking to show their team spirit

He was excited about making some signs to show his support… so Grandma (me)… with her never-ending supply of ideas … helped him make a sign  … We made it out of a box… covered in paper… glued “Viking” pictures … and drew pictures… and painted … put it on a stick provided by his Poppy… and hung gold and purple ribbons  from it… Well, I guess you get the picture… He thought it was just awesome!… Our heads put together can usually come up with some pretty nifty stuff

We made various other smaller signs… and he told me, “Taylor made me one too”… that’s his older sister

I left him to watch TV for a while and got on   … He would come in and get a few supplies from my stash … I had no idea what he was doing until he brought 3 cards to me and asked me, “Will you spell a few words for me?” He’s seven … and he had written most of what he wanted to say by himself… The gist of it was… He had written notes to all three of his coaches telling them how they were the best coaches his team could have… then placed them in envelopes to take to them the next day…

Of course tears came to my eyes of how thoughtful he was… how he had done this all on his own… how “smart” I think he is!… but, of course the main thing is that he has a good heart  … and maybe he’s already learning to show it to others … I just think that’s such a wonderful thing… Way to go Mom and Dad… Sisters… maybe even Grandparents… for showing him the way others should be treated

I always say, “Show by example… and it will never be forgotten!”

Love you Carson!

PS… Mom held the sign high and everyone commented on how great it was at the parade… I knew it all along!

Pajamas Will Do For Today!

Gift…

It’s been a lazy day for me… It’s 4:00pm and I have yet to get out of my PJ’s … I haven’t been lazy! … I’ve cleaned both bathrooms … made beds… cooked… ran vacuum  … checked emails /Facebook   … and watched a movie… which I liked a lot!

I had my Grandkids over last night… We watched the Kentucky Derby

on TV… drawing names of horses out of a bowl… We each had 4 horses since there were five of us… The pots were enormous! $3.00 for the Winner…$2.00 for 2nd Place…and a $1.00 for 3rd place… No argument about the amount… We were having fun!… Poppy and Carson were putting stones down along the sidewalk… and got finished just in time to watch the Big Race… We watched and rooted our horses to victory… Carson winning 1st… He is 7, so $3.00 was great for him!… I won 2nd Place which went back into my purse for them to spend later… and Uncle Doug won 3rd… which he in turn gave to Kennedy… She told us how she was saving her money for something she had her eye on… So he contributed to her fund.

We then left for the park which is near my house… having sprinklers turned on… lots of playground equipment  … and an ice cream man that rides through in his truck…What more could you want?… They ran… climbed… whirled… spinned… got wet… played catch… and by the time we left I could see them wearing down.

They were hungry… so popcorn chicken  and macaroni /cheese  was fixed… and afterwards homemade ice cream was on the agenda… Cookies and Cream  was the flavor… Packing ice and rock salt around the container of milk and mix… Plugging it in outside… and letting it do its churning thing… No cranking anymore… I find it enough trouble just to get the maker out… have all of the ingredients… and keep it packed… to ever want anything but, an electric one … It was really good, although I would double the recipe next time.

After the guys passed the football  outside… us girls pushing ourselves in the swing … and watered flowers … we were ready to settle in and watch a movie… I could see eyes were getting very sleepy and when both asked for back rubs… I knew it wouldn’t be long… Covers were gotten out… The TV turned down low… and before you knew it… Silence and heavy breathing was all you could hear… My angels were asleep! They are never any trouble!…But, as you see… we stay very busy… That could be why I’m still sitting here in my pajamas writing this… Guess I better get a shower and be ready to watch my favorite TV show… and then bedtime will be here… maybe I’ll just put on clean PJs  …what’s the use of getting dressed now!

“Busy As A Bee!”

Gift…

The best feeling is being busy!… I woke up to a meowing cat … Checked my email and Facebook … Straightened up the house … Had a shower… Went to the YMCA  for my water classes… Came home and fixed lunch… Ran a friend for some errands since she can’t drive anymore … Came home and washed everything down outside with the water hose  after my Bobby had cut grass… I finally rested by playing a game on the computer and watching a little TV … and then went out to finish washing off the areas in the back of the house… I have talked to my sister … and now it is “me” time… A time to rest… slow down and unwind as we do after our water aerobics… All I can say is that it feels so good to really get tired physically… making my mind clearer… and hopefully a peaceful sleep awaits me … Thanks Springtime!… because it’s your wonderful warm weather that makes all of this possible… Don’t you think so?

My “Least” Favorite Breakfast!…or Maybe My “Favorite”!

Gift…

After eating a can of Mandarin Oranges for breakfast…I saw a question on Facebook… What is your least popular breakfast food?… Now let me see… I have to say I prefer “real” breakfast foods over sweets…You know… like Bacon, Eggs (Sometimes),Fried Potatoes , Sausage Gravy/Biscuits , Omelets (Spanish) with Salsa , sometimes “good” Sausage …but, then when I’m in a sweet mood…Fluffy Pancakes with lots of melted butter and warm syrup , “Belgium”Waffles where the butter oozes down in the little squares and the syrup puddles there also “Good”doughnuts… like crispy on the outside “Apple Fritters” and soft on the inside… My favorite “Take out breakfast” would be a sausage biscuit sometimes … a bacon/cheese biscuit or bagel sometimes (no egg)… a breakfast burrito with mild salsa sometimes… Hot Krispy Cream Doughnuts with milk sometimes… By looking back on my choices … I would have to say cereal and oatmeal  would be my least favorites… I answered the question by writing this blog… because they were never mentioned!… Right now …since I’m watching my intake of calories...the fruit was my choice and oatmeal begins to taste better everyday…“Everything” Bagels (lots of seeds) are right up there on top…with light cream cheese… As you can see…“I LIKE BREAKFAST!”… but, my “real”choices are not so good for me… so I will try to have “them” every once in a while… where I won’t feel deprived… but, fruit , oatmeal, and bagels are going to become my new best friends for breakfast… Any other suggestions?… I would love to hear!

“Counting Sheep”

Gift…

I’m awake  for the second night in a row…always around 2:00am…I try to just lay there and go back to sleep, but to no avail!…So I get up…do the bathroom and drink of water thing …then I go to my refuge…my computer…I can look at the weather for the day …read the latest news , check my e-mails , look into Facebook and then sometimes I even resort to playing a game …Tonight I thought…I’m up…I might as well write my Blog…As good a topic as any I could come up with…I wonder why we wake up like this…Too much on my mind is usually my case…I begin to think about things going on in my life…things I want to do…things I can change and things I can’t!…Swirling thoughts …and usually tired eyes …I also have come to the conclusion eating before bed is another culprit!…So my resolve is to curb that habit!…I’ve been reading before I go to sleep…making me so sleepy…I fall off instantly…Evidently it’s the staying asleep …that’s the problem…Have you ever tried the “Counting of Sheep”?… one by one over the fence until you can’t see them anymore …I also try counting backwards from 100…100, 99, 98, 97, 96 95,94…Oh, I’m so sleepy …I think I’ll go back to bed…See you in the morning!

An “Angel Wing”

I’ve been needing a lift lately…Something to make things seem alright…Every day you hear such bad news on the television, emails, Facebook , newspapers, and from friends and relatives…You try not to let it get you down…I do have faith in God …and that He will provide for my needs…but, the world  creeps in once in awhile…I decided to help Bobby outside today…Get out of the house…get out of the doldrumsFresh air and sunshine usually does that…So,we cleaned up some limbs and vines that Bobby had already cut off of the fence…We, working together, usually make for a good team…And as we get older…we need to help each other more…As I was raking  near the back fence I found an “Angel WingIt is made of stone…I have no idea where it came from…In my yard, in leaves, with debris, tiny branches and dirt… raked up in a pile  …but, there it was!…It had been broken off of something, but I certainly didn’t have anything like it… It made me smile when I turned it over in my hand and being me, I feel it is a sign from God  that better days are ahead…and I can believe it because I know He shows me in such unique ways… Don’t ignore your sign…it may come in the most simple, wonderful way!

My “Angel Wing” that I found…

“My Kids!”…

I believeAngel Wingscome in many forms…My first Granddaughter  was sent to us when we were in desperate need of some comfort… A light to shine in our world…and she has been… I received my job with Special Ed Children , out of the blue…in an unconventional manner… and it was the best thing for me as a job and for my retirement…I met my husband   in a place I would never have thought of… and it has been lasting with joy…Our daughter-in-law  came into our family, making us so much more than we had been… Of course I could go on and on…because I truly believe in happenings that are meant to be…I could list bad as well as good…but, we all have them…It is how you meet those happenings…how we react to those happenings…and this is what others will see…Look back into your life and try to see “Your Angel Wings”

“My Time!”…

I love getting up early before anyone else …It’s my quiet time…I can check my email and Facebook  …I can start writing my blog …I have my first and only cup of coffee for the day…I open the blinds and doors and peek out…Usually nothing is stirring yet…I like it!…The sun makes its way over the big hill up above our house…Sometimes you think it’s going to be a cloudy day…because it takes a while for it to make its way …I straighten up a little…I watch the  of the day…I am usually contemplating about what the day has in store…appointments, grandchildren activities, who might be coming over, my “To Do” list …I check my calendar…making adjustments if need be…I say my silent prayer for my family…and anyone else in need…This time of day…it belongs to only me for awhile…It’s nice!…As the sun begins to get higher…I look out my kitchen window and notice my birds starting to land near the bird feeder …My momma and daddy Sparrow are still feeding their youngster who was born at the beginning of summer…”He is rotten!”, I say…because he can fly to our deck, but his parents are still feeding him …It has been so neat watching this little family all summer…It won’t be long before my cat Jill, will find me…She’ll want her rub as she sprawls on the kitchen floor …I’ll get tiny licks of affection…I love her too!…Then it won’t be long until my Bobby awakes and comes in with a “Good Morning!”…and “You’re up early!”…Coffee is ready for him…his favorite drink  …and the day begins!

“My Kids!”…

Our students use to arrive quite early…The male teacher and aide met the buses …as we waited in the classroom for them to arrive… I felt sorry for them…some having to arrive so sleepy …I knew how I felt, so I could sympathize with them…Everyone was in their seats by 7:30am…I do have to say, most came in “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed” as the saying goes…usually happy and glad to be with us…We would be checking attendance to see who was there …I would collect any notes or assignments from them …and then take the “Breakfast Crew” to the cafeteria …The cafeteria people took care of our wants really well…My free coffee every morning was a blessing … After that, I was ready for the day…They had great cinnamon rolls , pancakes/sausage on a stick , biscuit with sausage, coffee cake and muffins at times and of course the ever popular cereal choices…The students who had already eaten breakfast would stay in the room with the teacher and other assistant…We had a  communications department…They broadcasted the news and weather report over the TVs in every room each morning and anything of importance happening at the school…They did a great job!…Some of our students were broadcasters too… We had a few minutes to check our email…because almost all of the important information concerning school activities was done this way…and then I took a few kids to different parts of the hallway to collect attendance folders …a learning exercise for our special students…It didn’t take too long , before they were on their own!…and this is how our school day began!

To “Facebook” or NOT to “Facebook”?…That Is the Question!

I hooked up with Facebook   today…Have actually fought getting on…Reasons???

#1. Safety Issues …who’s going to get my info?

#2. Time consuming  …I already spend so much time doing my blog …which I thoroughly enjoy

#3. My husband just doesn’t get it!…”Who are you talking to?…Who is getting all your info?…Why do you want to do it?…Don’t you think you’re on the computer too much as it is?”, he says.

#4. I like to hear all the pros and cons before I try something.

 #5. I didn’t understand the concept fully.

#6. Just because everyone does it…doesn’t mean I have to or even want to.

#7. My husband is watching someone on TV right now… who had their bank account and their “Friends” bank accounts compromised and pretty much depleted…just by being on Facebook.

The reason I changed my mind was really quite by accident …I was looking at a sites Facebook account…when they said I needed to join or could go no further…so right then and there I did it…Within minutes you are pretty much hooked…all those people who you know…just waiting for me to become their friend …Is’nt that grand!…I thought I was already their friend…but, evidently not …They seem to think they can only talk to me and share their thoughts and activities with me this way…I agree it doesn’t take as much effort…

No going to the telephone and sitting in one spot for a while and having an actual conversation… after eavesdropping   on the other parties conversation that shares the line with you…Oh no, that was when I was in Elementary School…1950’s I do believe …Hmm…

No getting out a pen…more likely a pencil…and paper with just some lines on it or plain white…and actually writing in cursive  …Dear _____, … How have you been?…and so on and so on…until you’ve told them everything that had happened the last couple of weeks…signing it with Love, ______… having to buy a stamp and licking it  and placing it on the envelope …and you actually knew how to address it the correct way…I even remember when zip codes  started being used…Oh no, what year was that?…July1,1963 to be exact…

No going to the dime store  and actually buying a special birthday card or get well card  and actually mailing it to the person…and they thought that the card was the gift  …Oh no, just a card…I thought you had to buy expensive presents…I believe I like the card idea…Let’s try it for a year…wouldn’t people be surprised?

No walking across the street and sitting on the porch …having a cup of coffee or a glass of iced tea…with your neighbor…Oh no, you don’t really know your neighbor that well…you just say hi and by…as you get in your car to go a couple of blocks down to Wal-Mart  or Kroger…

So it looks like our way of communicating has changed a lot…so do I keep on blogging???  Do I keep on “Facebooking” ??? Do others keep on texting??? or talking on cell phones while doing 5 things at once??? …I’m sure that gives the person you are talking to, lots of your attention…

So here’s the dilemma …Do you want me for your friend??? and do I want you for my friend???

<<<<<<<Which one would you rather do?…

“My Kids!”…

Some of our students knew about Facebook   long before I did…They saw their parents, relatives or friends doing it …Some said they had their own Facebook account…Who am I to doubt it…One thing I do know is that “Friendship”  was so important to these children…Some of our kids were so friendly we had to teach them what was appropriate and what wasn’t…You just can’t hug everyone  …even if you think you like them a lot…Some of our kids even wanted to sit on others laps …NO, NO!…that was quite unacceptable…We were not their Mom or Dad…even if they thought that way of us…another teaching time…When we would be out in a public place such as a movie theater  …a grocery store… an amusement park …a playground area…We would have to watch and make sure our kids were kept safe   from unfriendly people…They loved talking … had so much trust…so suseptible…so easily swayed …These children will need to be supervised  as to who they accept  as their Friends …Because they themselves, are just too friendly!
