“Do You Like Eating in the Car?”

Do you like eating in the car? I can’t say I especially do…but, today we did…after going to the movies  we went to to eat a hot dog …Bobby got the All American and I got the Chicago…They had been advertising them for a month…so today was the day…You drive up, park  and look at the menu …and after deciding what you want you push the little button …and a voice comes over a speaker…kind of weird if you think about it…after ordering …you can pay with your debit card   right there below the menu board…technology at it’s best!…We received our food pretty quickly …I don’t think our little girl who brought our food was on roller skates but, sometimes they are…I could never do that…I can’t skate that well to begin with…and to stay on skates for hours would just wear me out…all food places seem to have a gimmick…and this is one of Sonics…oh, yeh…by ordering outside in the parking lot you are expected to tip the skating waitress …That’s OK with me…they are usually young teenagers and can use a few extra dollars besides minimum wage…Our hot dogs were good as was the chocolate shake…because that’s what I received instead of a chocolate malt…there is a difference!…but, I just didn’t feel like waiting to exchange it…That’s one fault with drive through places …you better check your order before you leave…it will usually be missing something or not quite what you ordered…My brother and sister went to the Ranch House when they were dating or hanging out……I hear there was one on Dixie Highway  and I know one was on Preston Highway near Phillips Ln. …Did you know there is one in New Albany  still?…I didn’t either, but after a little investigating…I found it…I think we’ll ride over there and try it out …I was too young to hang out at that time…but, when I became a teenager … Frisch’s on 3rd or Jerry’s on New Cut was where we rode around and around and around…across from Iroquois Park …There are only 3 Jerry’s now in Louisville…We thought they had the best food…although food wasn’t the main reason you went to these “hang outs” as we called them…it was to meet up with people you knew and to meet new people…This was so much easier than it is now, because you drove up in your cars, parked and ordered your food and drinks  outside…and so it was a place to see people and be seen…just like …Now as you drive through a McDonald’s  or a Burger King…you just keep on driving to get out of the line…and to hang out would be a NO No! I liked our way of eating outside …it was friendly, a great place to meet other teenagers and just plain fun!…I think I might try eating at again…it brought back such great memories! !!!

“My Kids!”…

It’s funny how kids know every fast food place in the city…as we would be driving to go to the bowling alley, shopping at Kroger, to the park, downtown to the Center for the Arts…wherever…they could read all the fast food restaurants names…and know what they liked to eat there…of course it was usually burgers, fries and cokes Those Golden Arches of McDonald’s or “Mickey D’s” as the kids called it could be seen a mile away …as I said every place has a gimmick!…I have to admit I like fast food every now and then…but, sometimes just the word McDonald’s turns me off…I like real food…I guess I mean vegetables, sitting down at a table with real plates and silverware…real glasses for my drink…but, the kids these days and times love fast food/drive through better than any type of food you could cook them…Our students were no different!…After bowling and other places we sometimes stopped to get lunch out..I have to admit it was a treat not to eat in the cafeteria…even if we took it back to school …we all looked forward to it…If the teachers stopped for lunch and the kids had brought a sack lunch/drink  I always tried to at least get them some fries  to share…They loved it! and you know, I seldom heard any complaints…as long as they got that taste of fast food they were happyIt was fun! Eating in Mrs. Griffin’s car, listening to the radio  and  …boy, does that bring back memories!
