West Baden Is Always Worth The Ride!

On our way up to French Lick, Indiana the other day we followed this truck until it reached it’s destination of a company that makes furniture

The scenery was farm country and small quaint towns

We stopped at this little country/family friendly restaurant we had discovered earlier on one of our rides…

The friendliest people eat here… mostly farmers in the surrounding area… and their wives/family…

As we ordered and ate (the BEST friend green tomatoes)…

I got into a conversation with one of the locals who used to farm in this area…

Wife has passed and children have moved away… but, he still resides here and loves it…

He gave me directions to a mill that was close…

making me wonder… “is this the sawmill that the truck we followed had come from?”…

very likely!…

probably in his 80’s… was a pleasure to talk to…

We arrived at WEST BADEN/French Lick … about 25 minutes later…

Sharon had never seen this wonderful West Baden Springs Hotel that had been a favorite of gangsters in it’s hayday…

Rich in decor and history…

The rotunda is just awesome…

the huge fireplace is so beautiful….

Stained glass adorns many of the windows… in the hotel…

The wrap-around porch is wonderful… with rocking chairs to accommodate you with a peaceful sit!…

The massiveness of the rotunda area is a sight to see…

Our friend… Sharon… my sister Carolyn, Bobby and I enjoyed our day!

We made our way over to the French Lick Hotel/Casino to play awhile…

and we did enjoy watching the people… and having fun…

The grounds here are just as lovely

We ate at another local restaurant for dinner…

(many stores and eating places have emerged since we first found this nice spot)…

A few days later… we got an invite with a FREE ROOM … in the mail…

which Bobby and I will take advantage of

Might even ride the train from the French Lick Scenic Rail Way that is available…

an 1-3/4 hour ride through the Hoosier Forest and scenic area…

God’s Surprises… and a Country Ride…

God is always leaving me surprises…

I had walked out to put some trash in the can… and these beauties were waiting for me…

but, the Blue Morning Glory was “the surprise”… had come up without me noticing…

from seeds… of years past… but, one of my favorites!

Then… I looked up to see the neighbor’s puppies greeting me…

They are up on the deck across the fence…

So cute!… and really nosey!…

We had decided to take a ride in the country… going across the river up into Indiana…

We took the long way to view the countryside… and small towns…

We saw pumpkins/mums for sale k0441157 … letting us know Fall was here whether we were ready or not…

We were looking for a small restaurant to eat breakfast but, to no avail…

so…

we waited until we were in French Lick, Indiana… to eat breakfast at Denny’s… always good… always a good alternative…

I had Strawberry Cream Pancakes…- eggs-bacon- hash browns… untitled

SO good!…

Bobby opted for a Belgium Waffle– eggs- sausage links…

I caught his picture outside…

a quaint little town that is growing due to the Casino that draws visitors in…

A beautiful place…

We went back home another way… and passed Patoka Lake…

The water so blue and people fishing…

A train passed under the road we were on… as I caught a picture of the Goldenrod…

Goldenrod being our state flower…

It was in full bloom everywhere!

We usually stop for an ice cream from Dairy Queen…

Reeses Blizzard was my weakness…

and Bobby had a burger and Vanilla Shake…

He seems to keep an appetite with the Chemo he is on…

As we crossed the bridge over the Ohio River into Kentucky…

we were detoured downtown…

Grabbed a few pictures of the city…

I could spend days taking pictures of the old buildings mixed with the new…

A very nice day…

Hoping to have many more!

Finish This #49

1. My ideal winter weekend…

was a weekend Bobby and I spent at French Lick Indiana Hotel…

ct-re-sp-ho-1114a

The winds started blowing profusely!.. as we traveled further North…

In an hour… snow was coming down and blowing literally…”sideways”…

Cars and trucks… (us included) were having a hard time holding the vehicles  on the road…

We wondered about turning back… but, we are quite adventurous under our calm exteriors…

and we kept heading to our destination…

I think it’s exciting to be in unusual circumstances sometimes…

It had turned colder also… and the snow was accumulating on the grass and trees…

We arrived safely… and noticed we weren’t alone this weekend… Many had opted to stay with their plans and had made it to the hotel…

We checked in… and it wasn’t long before the electricity was out at the Hotel…

We wandered through to the Casino where it’s generator kept everything moving smoothly…

We played… ate… and totally enjoyed our evening…

As we made our way back to the Hotel… The electricity had finally been restored…

Candlelight was not needed… but, the ambiance of the flickering lights was beautiful and enjoyed for awhile…

Cozy in our room with a hot beverage… we snuggled in to enjoy the rest of our stay…

We awoke to a White Winter Wonderland!…

Trees and bushes covered in sparkling ice and snow…

Many branches were broken… but, we were safe and enjoyed our unexpected adventure immensely!

2. My favorite song lyric…

Mini Adventure Ends… Al Di La’… but, there is “Beyond”

We’re almost done… Actually, we were pretty done by the time we reached our room … We showered… put on our PJs… and since we actually hadn’t eaten supper… just fried pickles much earlier… we had on our minds to warm up the leftover pizza  from the night before… It was still so good…Turning on the TV… what to our surprise… one of our favorite old movies from when we were teens came on…A Summer Place

Cover of "A Summer Place"

with troy Donahue and Sandra DeeWhat a great way to end our little adventure… It couldn’t have worked out better!…

The movie came out in 1959… so we were actually 10 going on 13… This was probably a memorable movie because it addressed things that were so taboo in our young lives… Affairs… pregnancy … young love… And as we commented… not having to show all of the details… as they do now… Your imagination could paint the pictures even better than the real action… Why did this have to change??? … Just have to show more, more, more… and now our kids have no innocence It’s right under their noses… So they say, “It must be OK to do these things”… So sad!… Can you believe we got so much out of watching an old movie???…

I have to admit Sandra Dee  was sure a cutie… and Troy Donahue wasn’t bad either …

It brought back memories of another favorite movie of mine with him in it…”Rome Adventure

and the songAl Di La‘” which means “Beyond”… Just love that song and the music… We stayed up and reminisced some more… talked to our guys at home… Father’s Day  was coming that Sunday… Already had received a call from my son to come to their house for dinner and swimming… Sounded like a winner to me… Something to look forward to after having to leave our mini vacation

We slept soundly… as we had been doing… Vera got up before me and brought me back fresh coffee to have with another donut from the Friar Donut Shop… our last hurrah!… The coffee tasted so good since I had warmed up my leftover coffee the morning before… Thanks Vera!… You’re a great cousin!…

We packed… left the keys… and hit the road… We arrived at her house in Murfreesboro, TN  and I immediately got into my car and headed North to Louisville... I would make pretty good time if I could miss the Nashville going home… after work… traffic…

Arrived home safely… greeted by my husband , son and cat, Jill… I could tell they had missed me…. Isn’t that grand!…

The T-shirts I got for my guys at home… were a hit… and others enjoyed their small gifts as well…

I just saw a coupon for Zip-Lining near French Lick , Indiana through the Hoosier Forest… A stay at the French Lick Springs Hotel

…check out the casino  … Is that my next mini adventure???…We’ll see!

Please check out AlDiLa’…it is so wonderful…
