Christmas Party at my niece’s house…

Would you like to stand under this Mistletoe???

It was fun going through photos of the past year… Of course this was just a sampling!… It brought back happy memories… and made me realize just how many good times I had!

Day #3 …You thought we were through???

Memory…

After leavingDick’s Last Resort … we exited a side door and was pleasantly surprised to be in “Ole Smoke Holler”

We spotted 30+ rocking chairs and benches facing a stage… We kept walking and came upon what all the commotion was about… A real live moonshine still bubbling away behind screened windows where the public could get a good view… Quite interesting… since all I’ve ever heard was that moonshine was illegal… Guess not!… We kept circling the area and came upon a huge “Moonshine” tasting room

Have I ever drank it???… No, but another Bucket List item was about to be checked off as we headed to listen to the waiter’s talk… There were about 10 flavors  … I spoke up and took a little sip of what I thought he called “lemon drop” This little bitty cup seemed to have a big punch as they say… I thought it best to drink it down fast… Yes, that was the best way… Blackberry was our next taste… as I finished off Vera’s lemon… Her face showed pure disgust  … but, the blackberry was not turned down by her or me… A quick drink let us know that was a much better flavor… but, at 40 proof… that would do us for the night… As I said… we are not big drinkers… just having fun and trying new things… We felt warm after probably two tablespoons … I can’t imagine drinking a full glass… In this area they also had an original Moonshine Running truck

Wine tasting in another area… Daiquiris  in another area… We decided the Moonshine was the last of our tasting and found two free rocking chairs to listen to some local guys singing and playing Rocky Top“… there were kids dancing and others singing along… We waited for intermission and then headed for our apartment… We were very tired but, had really enjoyed our day!… but, the night was not over yet…

For your information… Moonshine distilling is now legal in Tennessee… This company called Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine opened up right on the Parkway in Gatlinburg a few years ago and looks as if they have a gold mine from all of the people visiting… selling by the jar and cases…

Please enjoy this version of Rocky Top…it will have you tapping along

Day # 2… Comes to a Close…

Memory…

We were going to change our wet clothes but, had drip dried enough that we just put our clothes on over our suits … we were ready for a cold drink… We had enjoyed the little cafe’ where we had eaten lunch… so back there we went…  to rest for a little while enjoying an ice-cold Smirnoff Orange Screwdriver homemade tortilla chips and salsa …with a side of sour cream… It was yummy… and so refreshing… You have to understand… when I say we had a drink… it is usually one drink… We were having fun exploring new adventures… new foods… new drinks

After driving back to Gatlinburg… we found the Roaring Fork rustic stone cabins  that my husband and I had brought the boys to when they were young… I really couldn’t believe they were still there… Looked for “The Black Bear Restaurant” where we would eat… but, sorry to say… it was gone… Looked it up on the internet and found that it had burned and wasn’t rebuilt… That’s the way it goes… Just a memory now…

Roaring Fork Cabins…Honeymoon Suite…

We had stayed in that exact one…

We had left our bathing suits on as I said… so when we reached the apartment… we went straight to the hot tub   … Talked to a young girl from Illinois… so friendly… The outside pool was quite cold… so we opted to swim in the indoor one … After showering and removing the river, hot tub and pool water… we both had put on pajamas…We looked at each other     and said,Pizza sounds good”…and delivery sounded even better!… We found a close pizza place that made fresh hand tossed crust… and they would bring it to our door… We decided one with EVERYTHING  would be great!…

I believe Vera actually was about to doze when a knock at the door was heard… Delivered with a smile … we could smell our pizza immediately!… and it was so good!… We thought we were very hungry…but, had half of it left… That could be lunch or supper… and it wouldn’t matter to us…

Of course we reported in to our husbands… and some of our kids and friends even called us   … I do believe they were missing us… We slept like babies … knowing we had only one more full day and night to get in what we wanted to do… We opted to___________…

Our Adventure Continues…Day # 2

Memory…

We finally made our way back to our room… Of course the street is at an incline  that leads to it… We need to remember we’re in mountain and hill country… We were barely putting one foot in front of the other… We reached our room … PJ time… and I must have my Diet-Pepsi … which Vera was nice enough to purchase just for me when she got her Vitamin Water … She eats Protein Bars … I eat M&M’s We were asleep after checking in with our guys at home in probably “seconds!”…

Vera wants to go White Water Rafting … I said, “OK”, a little timidly… although I want to “Zip-Line” and she says, “OK”, a little timidly… I had been on the internet checking out places before we left… Found a MOM /POP rafting company on the Pigeon River not too far from Gatlinburg… about 30 miles… with $10.00 coupons for both of us… It was called “Rip Roaring Adventures”… After enjoying our “donuts” we left a little early… wanting to eat lunch before our reserved tour… We drove through the most beautiful countryside… getting higher and higher up into the mountains… The view was awesome!…

View from the Parkway…Crossing over a low part of the Pigeon River…

I had directions and Vera had verified them on the phone with the company… We had no trouble finding it… There were several places along the River offering rafting… and the teens and young adults abounded.. Evidently a great hang-out place for them…

Near the cafe’ where we ate…

We decided to eat at a little cafe’ offering home cooked food… and of course cold drinks… I had their veggie chili and homemade tortilla chips and my cousin opted for bacon and tomato … both were good… just soft drinks to drink…We were going to be on the water!…

We arrived at the starting point of our adventure

… Greeted by a lovely lady… treating us like we were old friends… Paid for our trip… and then decided to purchase a T-shirt to remember our day… We found a great deal… a pink girly T-shirt with the company’s name and a hat to match

Our “Rip Roaring” T-shirt/Hat

… The trip + souvenirs less than $50.00… Pretty good deal we thought!… We decided we needed sun glass holders since ours are prescription and didn’t want to lose them… Of course there they were… They had everything covered… They had said, “If you bring cameras, phones, sunglasses…etc. … and they are washed overboard… just kiss  them good-bye… no retrieving them”… We took them at their word…

Don’t you love her smile!

Adventure Ongoing…

Memory…

We arrived and immediately looked around as I said… We barely unpacked  until we headed for the main street in Gatlinburg… It was around 4:00 pm… and knew we had better get looking… Because we look… and look… and look… We had souvenirs  to buy… and maybe something for ourselves…

We started where our apartment street intersected with the main street where everyone is walking and looking just like us… We eye all kinds of handmade crafts… all kinds of t-shirts… air brushed with bears and outdoor scenes… and of course Gatlinburg sprayed across the front… Prices are not bad considering it is a favorite tourist attraction A sample of fudge   tasted so good and was just enough…

Gatlinburg’s Main Street…

Food places abound… and when we finally decided to eat supper… My cousin asked a young girl in one of the stores we were shopping at…”What’s your favorite place to eat?”…and she immediately answered, “CRAWDADDY’S” It was really close and so away we went…

We found the small entrance which led us upstairs to a big roomy restaurant…We opted to sit outside on the balcony and watch people since the weather was great… This can be interesting when all kinds of people are in one area… There was a mixture of old… middle age, like us… young couples with and without  babies and lots of kids and teens… Many States and Countries were represented…

We decided to split an order since helpings looked large… Fried Oysters … with a couple of side items…oh, yes… cheese grits… a great baked potato with toppings and a beer for me… and a Pina Colada  for my cousin… We are not big drinkers… but, wanted to have fun and enjoy our surroundings at this colorful Cajun Restaurant… It was good… until heartburn hit me later…Very spicy!…

Good and Spicy!

We had completed a circle… Browsing shops of soaps/perfumes … knickknacks… leather… glass… clothes… toys… etc. …and finally buying sugar cinnamon cake donuts for me and chocolate cream filled/crullers for my cousin at the “Donut Friar”… When I come to Gatlinburg I have to visit this shop… Best donuts ever!… They would be our breakfast in the morning…

Just love their donuts!

We were sitting on a bench  just watching the people as they strolled by… feeling quite tired but, oh so content and wondering why people were walking by with tall white paper hats on their heads… with crazy writing on them… Finally, my curiosity got the best of me… and I stopped a young couple who were nice enough to explain they had been to “Dick’s Last Resort”

Our Great Adventure…AKA…Mini Vacation!

Memory…

I cannot believe that a three night mini vacation can tire a person so much!…

I left Tuesday morning to meet up with my cousin who lives in Tennessee near Nashville at her house… I don’t usually drive long distances by myself… so this was one item I could check off my “Bucket List… I know… only about 4 hours on the road by myself… but, when you’ve never done it… it’s a big deal! … so laugh if you want… I understand…

My cousin who is about 10 months younger than me… which she points out as soon as I reach my birthday every year… had a good lunch already prepared… and afterwards we hit the road… She was driving now… So I set back to enjoy the ride

Of course we were excited to be on our own… no husbands… They had given us their “Permission”… ha, ha!… at least we let them think that… No kids… although they are grown… No grandkids… although we will take them anytime!… No one but, ourselves to talk to… and did we talk!… We do this a couple of times weekly by phone … keeping up with each other’s news…

We wanted to wait and eat supper when we arrived… We were headed for The Great Smoky MountainsGatlinburg , TN

Took this photo on way to Pigeon River…

about another four-hour drive but, as you remember… I was chilling… letting Vera do the driving

We enjoyed the scenery… took a break when we wanted to… ate a snack… drank a cold drink  … and was beginning to get in the groove of the freedom of being on our own…

My directions from  took is right to the front door of our Studio Apartment… right in the heart of Gatlinburg… in walking distance to most everything… We were loving it!… The apartment consisted of one big room… with a bathroom and closet… Queen bed… pull-out sofa… very comfy… fireplace… flat screen TV enclosed in a cabinet… sink… stove… toaster… coffee pot… dishes/utensils… microwave… refrigerator…towels… small table with chairs… Everything we would need for our little adventure

We investigated the premises… finding the outdoor pool… the indoor pool  … the hot tub  … the activities center… the game area… and all of the little places for sitting if that’s what we wanted to do… Parking garage right off of the elevator… We were beginning to like this a lot! …
