#FWF Free Write Friday: Time & Place

Here is your FWF prompt:

Time & Place

It’s your first day of junior high school

fwf kellie elmore badge

My Junior High was grades 7 – 12…

Leaving Elementary School to what we called High School…

I couldn’t wait!…

I was growing up…

I would be entering into my last years of school

The subjects were changing…

Algebra…Humanities…Spanish…Physics…Geometry…

psc0015

Such a different array of classes with different teachers for each…SSH0015

Moving from class to class with in-between chats with other students hurrying along in the hallways…gdo0056

Sometimes another floor… sometimes cutting through the breeze way outside…

Going to a locker that was all mineCombination of numbers keeping it safe!….                                      u12930373jba0400

Restrooms for girls with mirrors to primp in…k10359530

Lunchroom filled with laughter…noise…and food that no one seemed to be eating…x21738989

Sitting with friends…k6972014

Eyeing the boys that seemed to think “they were all that!”… car0303

and some girls too!…

The quiet kids… the popular kids… the poor kids… the rich…

A beginning of how life would be once High School was over…

Lessons were being learned… not, just from books… but, by experiences of those youthful feelings

What did I want to be?

Where did I want to go?

Who would I remain close to?

Who would exit… never to hear from again?

What was my destination?k12809880

No money for college…

A job, perhaps…

Lots of us went to the work force at this time in my life…

Not a bad thing…

But, some dreams seemed shattered…

Some hopes never fulfilled…

An empty spot… that still needs to be filled…

k11769989

Do you have one?

Daily Prompt: Standout

When was the last time you really stood out in a crowd? Are you comfortable in that position, or do you wish you could fade into the woodwork?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us STANDOUT.

OK… Let’s go back to my High School DaysOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You have a very shy teenager…

You are liked a lot!…

Have many friends…

Have been included in outside activities as well as in school…

But, still painfully shy!…

I talk to my immediate friends constantly…

Even to friends who are boys… on the phone… but, in person… I am a nervous wreck…

I must hide it well… as my tummy is in knots at times…

Because I am always liked…

Senior Year arrives…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ballgames…

Dances…

Prom…

Ring Day…

Class Day…

Yearbook time…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We have an assembly to announce all of the superlatives…

Best All-Around…

Most Likely to Succeed…

Most Athletic…

Cutest Couple…

You get the picture…

I’m enjoying “watching” from the bleachers… as all of the “popular” kids are named and awarded …

and then like a dream… They are announcing Mr and Miss Panther… Our mascot… k9147405

“Did I hear “My” name?

“Are my friends saying, “They called your name!”…

“You need to go up on stage!”…

I’m in shock! …

I feel like I’m in a daze…

My feet are moving… but, don’t feel as though I am walking…

What is happening?

I’m Miss Panther?

Couldn’t be!

Mistake!

I’ve made my way to the stage as the other students are applauding…

For me!

They are asking for me to speak…

SPEAK!… I can’t even breathe…

A teacher says to me…”Just say thank you!… That will be fine!”

I do manage to open my mouth to acknowledge… and receive a bouquet of Red Roses…k12802966

and a Yearbook with my name engraved on it…

I open it later to see photos of “ME” that had been taken… unknowing to me… the plan of the Yearbook StaffOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I felt so happy!… but, amazed!

that my fellow students/teachers felt so highly of me… and had truly given me a wonderful surprise!

12 YEARS

12 YEARS!…

That’s how long it takes to go from an Elementary student in first grade to being that “Senior”  in High School

In this case a little girl to a young ladyOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My Granddaughter achieved this small goal in her life yesterday…

along with 265 other students that were in her graduating Class of 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I say… small goal… because it is only one of many she will obtain as the years continue on…

Next will be college… she has been accepted to the University of Louisville Louisville_Cardinals_svg

To say I am proud as a Grandma… Yes, for sure!…

and will celebrate this moment with her…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Poppy and Grandma… with our love…

Yesterday we met at Broadbent Arena… A part of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center able to hold all of the students… teachers… administrators… parents…grandparents… friends and relatives …

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Marching in…

All there… because of their love of that special child… that they were honoring

Taylor had a little gathering that came to wish her best wishes

I only captured our little cheering section

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Granddaughter with silly face… why do they do that!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Taylor with little sister, Kennedy…

Dad, Melanie (step-mom) , little sister, two cousins from Pittsburg and a friend that came with them and Bobby and myself…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Dad, Kennedy and Melanie…

(little brother at home)…

much too long for him!

but, many others had come to wish her congratulations…

Of course her Mom( Brian’s first wife) with Taylor’s other Grandma… a cousin who is like a best friend… one of her other “best friends” and her parents… and of course her boyfriend

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Best Friend…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Even big girls make silly faces!… with boyfriend…

Of course there were friends and their parents that Taylor had grown up with… and had known all of those 12 years… graduating themselves…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Amber… “best friend” too… has known since first grade!

She always smiles… but, I caught that twinkle of “achievement”u14931924  in her eyes today…

An accomplishment!…

There’s the usual speeches… musick5432485 … and calling of each graduates name as they came forward for their diplomas

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Taylor just received her diploma… Yes, there was a little cheering!

Cheers from the parents and friends as they crossed the front of the auditorium

Hats were flung into the air… A true celebration… and a traditional show that it was over!…

A bittersweet feeling for sure!…

Melanie’s Mom had us all over for dinner…

Her BIG PARTY is TODAY!…

Plenty of good food… and conversation… Taylor invited a few close friends… Actually the ones mentioned… her cousin, her “Best Friend” and her boyfriend… Content as apple pie

We had Boneless chicken breast off of the grillk4888068 , broccoli casserole, hashbrown casserole, salad and good french bread

Yummy!… to say the least… after sitting for 2 hours and getting there an hour early for seats…

I took dessertStrawberry Lemonade Cake

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA268836_578412365522394_1525735624_n

I hadn’t put the strawberries on yet… but, looked like photo…

and Chocolate Cupcakes… Always a bit of chocolate for my babies…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The cake was a hit… and will be making it again…

Graduating Memories…

My oldest Granddaughter… Taylor… graduates from High School tomorrow…k6351412

Just one tiny step in the path k12847487 she will follow through her life…

but, an important one

Yes, she “is all that” as her little sister… Kennedy… tells her…

In my eyes she is pretty special!…

I’ve watched her grow from day one of her birthk9925051

Being my first Grandchild… my heart k11084623 got caught in her awe… a part of my son… a beautiful angel  sent to us from God…

She has been a joy to us and we feel blessedk9249506

We will have a family cook out k4888068 to celebrate her Graduation Ceremony tomorrow… and then Sunday will be her “big” graduation party… with all friends… family invited…

k14040296

I just checked the weather… and we are lucking out… a beautiful sunny day in the forecast… k13940276

I know my daughter-in-law and son have been so busy making this a day to remember for Taylor…

The plans… the invitations k5714560 … the menu… the musick5432485 … the decorating… getting enough tables/chairs…

It takes all hands on deck…

I’m bringing appetizers… and was asked to put together a photo collage of my girl

Yes, I feel she’s mine at times… forgive me… but, she has my heart…

Melanie gave me lots of photos of her… and along with all that I had… over 100 were scanned… cropped… ran off… cut to fit… and placed on a Congratulations Board  k10548896 I found…

It gives what I call a “representation” of her young life so far…

Prom Night…

One more picture to come… but, not until Saturday… with cap/gown/diploma!u14931924

“Just Do It!”

Saturday was a busy day!

My son had signed up all three of the kids (my grandkids) in a 5K race

I understand that’s about 3 miles

He had seen a sign up at a church near their subdivision…

401823_487164308005253_1832360931_n

It was to be part of the Spring Festival  k9465810 of the small town they had moved to recently…

They love the atmosphere of it…

He runs… but, hasn’t lately due to moving, etc. …

So, no doubt he was all up for it!

and they were all willing!…

Ages 8, 11 and 18… and a cousin that’s 20 wanted to run too…

They picked up their numbers… and were up bright and early

It was a spur of the moment thing… That’s what I like about Brian… Just Do It!‘… is his motto… like the NIKE commercial

and Raven, their cousin… seconds later…

Finishing was the objective…

A little running… a little walking

And, “They Did It!”… k3166575

They were proud I could tell… as I talked to them… when we met later that evening… for Kennedy’s Birthday Partyk6502549

The oldest was truthful in saying, “I probably won’t do it again!”… but, with graduating k6351412 from High School and College on her mind… I can understand…

The other two… probably would be willing to go for it another time…

especially if Daddy says, “Let’s Do It!”

u14391793

Kennedy’s Birthday was a success… many little girls… and a few boys

I caught a photo as we were leaving of the aluminum foil k12424246 dress designs being

made for a contest… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Brian informed me that the girls actually slept later… and were awesome…

He was pleased to get some shuteye… after a full day with the kids!

He’s a good Daddy!… and he “just does it! “… nike_logo

Prom Night… An Ooh and Aah Moment!

The next “happening” was the same day as my niece’s birthday…

My Taylor Kay… oldest Granddaughter… is graduating from High School and it was Prom Night

gke0003

You can imagine how this makes me feel…

Proud…

Weepy…

Joy…

Lots of emotions…

Of course at these times you go back to when she was born… being my first Grandchild

What a feeling!

She called and wanted me to make her a garter…

Yes, it seems all of the girls have to have them…

I said I could do that…

a little elastic…

a little satin material…

a little lace…

a little bit of bling as I call it…

In this case the bling was from a cute necklace I found…the flower part… and the “bling”… a rhinestone button I found in my Aunt’s buttons I inherited…

Perfect combination and matched her dress of a Champagne color just right…

We went to my son’s house to take pictures and to ooh and aah… over her…

Of course her other Grandparents were there…

Taylor texted her little sister with this photo of them together after she had left …

400684_257833974361355_54213504_n Another “beauty” in about 7 years… and my heart will feel all these emotions again!

Some… Even Knew Me!

Memory…

I will be meeting with my fellow High School friends (classmates) for our 45th reunion… tomorrow… at a favorite hang out of ours when we were growing up…

It’s called Mike Linnig’s… a seafood restaurant along the Ohio River in the Southern part of Louisville… A more formal affair was tonight… but, I had a family get together and I really prefer the casualness of this restaurant… that follows the next day…

Typical serving of their fish… wonderful slaw…

By now most of us have retired… have Grandchildren… and have changed quite a bit…

But, as they say, “We’re all in the same boat!”

I’m going to wait until tomorrow to post this… because I hope to have a few photos of my closest friends… to share…

The weather has turned off a lot cooler… actually I got cold later this evening… so blue jeans and a sweater may be the attire… since it’s supposed to be even cooler…

So until tomorrow…

You’ll never guess!… I forgot my camera and also left my cell phone which I could have taken pictures with… on the charger at home…

I was so disgusted with myself… but, I wasn’t going to let this spoil my visit with old friends

I ask myself,How did we get so old?” I don’t feel old… well, at least most of the time… But, looking around we have grayed… put on a few pounds… some of the guys balding… and wrinkles have crept in…

Pleasure Ridge Park High School

One girl says, “I wish I could turn the clock back”… I say, “NO!… only f I could change a few things”…

Our colors were red/black… and the year I graduated we had a great season in football…

Many of us of course recognize each other… hugging… and joking… and saying how glad we are to see each other… It was just so nice… that as many of us that could meet and reminisce

Our 1967 Year Book… with my name engraved on it… since it would be my last…

Since I’ve no recent photos due to my forgetfulness… I have chosen a few of my memories to share… Just bear with me…

Our mascot… the “Panther”

I was totally surprised to be voted to be “Miss Panther” my Senior Year…

An awesome happening for the shy girl that I was!…

This was Mr. Panther and I on a photo shoot…

We had no clue it was for the honor of being Mr. and Miss Panther …

I had pages of autographs… and some of them were even of people I still remember… ha, ha!

My Senior picture…How wonderful! … those teenage years…

Our English Teacher was there today… I told her, “You were one of my favorite teachers!… She smiles… and says, “You don’t have to say that… I’m not going to give you a grade”…We all laughed… and thought how neat it was that we were so close that one of our teacher’s had come to join us…

So 45 years has passed… We left saying we hope we will be able to make it to our 50th…

How special that will be!

45+ Years of Friendship…

We were friends during High School… and have remained friends through long distance phone calls… Facebook… word of mouth…e mail…

Of course we’ve all changed… We graduated 45 years ago!… 1967 to be exact… and our 45th Class Reunion is coming up in October…

We’ve all married… and we all are still married to the same guys… We figured that was one for the record books!… We all have children… Peggy has a son… Leslie has two daughters and a son… Dorothy has two sons… Georgia has a son and I have two sons…We seem to dominate with boy offspring … That’s another common trait we share.

We have a mixture of grandchildren… pretty close in age with a few younger… and we all are so proud!

We met yesterday at Mike Linnig’s…

A seafood restaurant that’s down by the Ohio River in the southern part of Louisville… It was there when we were youngsters and Georgia thought it a good place for us to meet… and it was!… They have outside concrete tables under big ol’ trees …                                           Small wood screen houses if you prefer…                                                                                                                        … a larger meeting building for bigger groups… and of course the restaurant…

This is where we opted to sit… more like a sun room with air conditioning… We hit about 104 degrees yesterday in Louisville … So you see why we didn’t sit outside as we would usually do.

All that are able, will meet here again after our Reunion Dinner at a Hotel… on the following day… Dressy to casual … Take your pick…one or both…I liked that!… Options are good!

Peggy couldn’t make our little get together… due to her husband being ill We missed her!… Georgia came, but her husband had to work … Life goes on even if we do want all to attend… maybe another day… Leslie and her husband live in Winchester, KY… and drove down to be with us… They have children that still live here in Louisville…so they would get to see them later… Dorothy… our planner… and her husband came of course… We live in the south end  as we call it…and yes my husband and I came…

There were hugs and kisses …lots of talk and memories shared… of the past and present… No one recognized Leslie until she talked… She would get the “Most Changed” Award … Dorothy , we think has stayed true to herself in looks and mannerisms…We love that!… She would get the “Remain the Same” Award … Peggy wasn’t there… has changed a lot also… and, is still the same sweet person we remember her as… She would have to get the “Sweetest/Caring” Award … Georgia is still her little independent self and is our philosopher... I just love listening to her stories and watching her expressions… She would have to get the “Most Expressive” Award …and then there comes me… I know how I’ve changed… I used to be the quietest/shyest and would have received that award way back then… but, now “I Love Me” as our aerobic instructor tells us to say to ourselves… so I’m quite the “Chatterbox” and this will be my award to myself … I can always come up with an opinion and an answer… Just ask me!

Our husbands enjoyed themselves it seems by all the chatter coming from their end of the table… and of course us girls could go on forever…

It’s so nice to be able to reconnect after 20 years for some of us… and just pick up like it was yesterday… I call that true friendship

Peggy, Dorothy, Leslie, Georgia, Marilyn…

We plan on making this an annual little reunion… and Mike Lennig’s can remain the spot… It was “just right”

“Peace Out!”

Memory…Keepsake…

There are four of us friends going to meet for lunch … We haven’t done this in a long time… years to be exact… but, as soon as we get together it will be as if we talked every day … That’s what true friendship is…never-ending…faithful…loving  … I’ve known one of the “girls” since First Grade and the others since High School  … We are all quite different in appearance as well as our takes on life…We have each gone our separate ways…made a life with husbands, children and grandchildren…We’ve had good times and bad…We’ve all lived life as it came to us …Not probably our dreams …but, a good life…We are having a class reunion in the Fall…will be 45 years since we were the “Panthers”…our High School mascot … There were more popular kids…but, our little group has sustained… I read some of the names of fellow classmates…and realize how few I actually knew!… High School is pretty clicky…and to be included now with people wanting to get in touch is really quite amazing… I believe it’s the time we grew up in… We are called the Baby BoomersA pretty tight-niche group of people with ideals, compassion and heart!…The Viet Nam War   was being played out and many of us were effected by that … “Hippy Days”  with our long hair, bell bottoms, flowers  and hate to admit it but, drugs were coming in on the scene… We were supposed to be free-spirited peaceful and full of love … Hate to tell everyone… Life is life whenever and wherever it happens!… Happiness is what you make it… Work ethics are what you make them… Friendships are kept if you make them… So that is where I am today… Not longing for by-gone days…but, happy to remember the good times and friends made… Peace Out!

“Graduation Day”…

My grandson, Carson  is graduating…I can’t wait to see him march down the aisle with his friends …Wearing his cap and gown …He is so handsome…the prettiest eyes  ever…and his smirky cute grin wins my heart over and over…He’s grown up so fast…I was just holding him on my lap in the swing …he was just a baby…I snuggled him , fed him his bottle , changed him, gave him a bath and got up with him if he fussed or cried when he spent the night…All of a sudden he was turning over on the blanket on the floor…then crawling …and finally those first steps …Busy! …I remember him following his “Poppy” around outside …I was second fiddle to his Poppy  soon after those first steps were taken…He liked all that stuff that men do…lawn mowers, trimming the grass, working on cars , washing cars , being in the shed with all those tools… He loved riding in his Poppy’s truck …especially in the little seats in the back…just his size…and opening up the sliding window …He felt so big !…Away to the convenient store they would go to buy a drink or a piece of candy…If he got tired he would crawl up into his lap and go to sleep…I was somewhat jealous… but, I just kept looking on …and enjoying the sight … My husband and his little “Bob the Builder…I loved it for my husband…I had the girls that came before Carson…that would be Taylor and Kennedy  …and they were pretty much “mine!”…Girly stuff …and Grandma was fun in pretending, dress up , drawing and painting shopping!…Then all of a sudden “Grandma” became fun to Carson too…She was great at coming up with neat things to do…It was a toss-up  then …to go to with Grandma and look for crafty stuff… his favorite $1.00 store or stay and watch Poppy and Dad put brakes on the car  and change the oil … What a decision??? I won that day with some persuasion that the men would still be there working when he got back…I’ve been to Carson’s other graduation …It was so neat watching him and his friends marching down the aisle in their blue and white gowns …Oh, did I tell you??? Carson is graduating from Kindergarten …and his other graduation Day was from Pre-school …Just think I’ve got Elementary School , Middle School , High School and College graduations to attend…”I can’t wait!”

“My Kids!”…

It’s time for my special kids graduation  from T.J. Middle School …It’s the first year that I wasn’t with them …I missed all of the things they learned…all of the places they went to…all of the talking during class time…all of the mischief they got into…all of the things that happened to them…all of the stories they told…all of the events they attended …and now it’s time for some of these great kids to move on to High School …I have been wondering why I’ve been so blue this week…and I finally I know why…it’s this time of year…This was probably the busiest time we had at school…end of year testing …end of year parties …end of year evaluations…end of year cleaning …last-minute field trips…finding out what classes you needed to take during the summer …Yes, I believe I’m sad! …I think the end of my first year of retirement  has gotten me homesick for what I had done for so long…I will visit “my kids” next week at their Graduation luncheonat school…talk to parents and teachers I haven’t seen since last May…get some hugs …maybe take a few pictures…Watch the students glow as they are honored for their achievements …No, I wasn’t the one to make out their certificates this year…I didn’t decorate their Graduation Cake …I didn’t shop for their little gifts …I am now a “bystander”…standing and watching as they move on in new directions …I will not come again to see “my kids”…They are “Graduatingand so am I!
