To My Sister

We lost one of our family members yesterday…

My sister’s husband

He came into her life… I would say… in the perfect moment

She had lost her first husband through death… brain tumor/heart… leaving her and her six children to be on their own… k2473211

She was not alone… many family members embraced these kids and her…

Loving them with all of their heart…

They seemed to become part of my own …

My second little familyk1587726

Four girls… two boys… ranging in ages… I’m guessing here… from one in the Marines… so maybe 19… no, there were two already married… so maybe 20 or so… to one in elementary school… so maybe 5… maybe not in school yet…

So you see… so young… to have a daddy taken away…

But, my sister is a strong woman…

Working… making ends meet… staying in touch with her family and her Bert’s family…

Curtis came into her life with a grin… and a slight limp of a leg…

And we knew he had been smitten!… He adored her!

and took on the responsibility of being a Dad as best he could with rebellious teens and a woman who had lost the love of her life… her first husband…

Carolyn met Curtis  at a Parent’s Without Partners dance… They were held weekly… and at that time… it was just to get out and be around others her age…

They were married after about of a year of on again… off again…

This would be a big decision on her part to make …

With six children… and a new man in her life…

Her mind was twirling…x25013794

But, they married… at one of her daughter’s homes… on Valentine’s Day

Life has had so many directions… illnesses…kids…moving to a different home twice… his children accepting her…

But, it seemed their love began to grow more and more…

k0379044

The kids came to acceptt him as their Dad… and the grandchildren that came.. knew only him as their Papa

They clung to him… and loved him… with all of their being…

Curtis has been a very sick man for most of their marriage…

but, my sister has tended to his every need…

He has had to have an amputation of a leg

heart trouble…and lately a lung disease and cancer

There are no words to describe all she has had to do…

A strong woman… an understatement for sure…

There will be no regrets that she did her best by both husbands…

As a sister… we have talked much… we can get the day going through our conversations… no matter how hard!

As he lay dying in their home… she was still in charge

making arrangements that had to be completed… talking to everyone who came in to say good-bye…k9934085

Talking to Hospice help as they arrived…

He went quickly… surrounded by much love… and his wife… who had become his life

Peace to you Curtis in your new life in Heaven

and peace to you my sister… as you pull it up again… and become yourself again…

Love,

Your Sister Marilyn

45+ Years of Friendship…

We were friends during High School… and have remained friends through long distance phone calls… Facebook… word of mouth…e mail…

Of course we’ve all changed… We graduated 45 years ago!… 1967 to be exact… and our 45th Class Reunion is coming up in October…

We’ve all married… and we all are still married to the same guys… We figured that was one for the record books!… We all have children… Peggy has a son… Leslie has two daughters and a son… Dorothy has two sons… Georgia has a son and I have two sons…We seem to dominate with boy offspring … That’s another common trait we share.

We have a mixture of grandchildren… pretty close in age with a few younger… and we all are so proud!

We met yesterday at Mike Linnig’s…

A seafood restaurant that’s down by the Ohio River in the southern part of Louisville… It was there when we were youngsters and Georgia thought it a good place for us to meet… and it was!… They have outside concrete tables under big ol’ trees …                                           Small wood screen houses if you prefer…                                                                                                                        … a larger meeting building for bigger groups… and of course the restaurant…

This is where we opted to sit… more like a sun room with air conditioning… We hit about 104 degrees yesterday in Louisville … So you see why we didn’t sit outside as we would usually do.

All that are able, will meet here again after our Reunion Dinner at a Hotel… on the following day… Dressy to casual … Take your pick…one or both…I liked that!… Options are good!

Peggy couldn’t make our little get together… due to her husband being ill We missed her!… Georgia came, but her husband had to work … Life goes on even if we do want all to attend… maybe another day… Leslie and her husband live in Winchester, KY… and drove down to be with us… They have children that still live here in Louisville…so they would get to see them later… Dorothy… our planner… and her husband came of course… We live in the south end  as we call it…and yes my husband and I came…

There were hugs and kisses …lots of talk and memories shared… of the past and present… No one recognized Leslie until she talked… She would get the “Most Changed” Award … Dorothy , we think has stayed true to herself in looks and mannerisms…We love that!… She would get the “Remain the Same” Award … Peggy wasn’t there… has changed a lot also… and, is still the same sweet person we remember her as… She would have to get the “Sweetest/Caring” Award … Georgia is still her little independent self and is our philosopher... I just love listening to her stories and watching her expressions… She would have to get the “Most Expressive” Award …and then there comes me… I know how I’ve changed… I used to be the quietest/shyest and would have received that award way back then… but, now “I Love Me” as our aerobic instructor tells us to say to ourselves… so I’m quite the “Chatterbox” and this will be my award to myself … I can always come up with an opinion and an answer… Just ask me!

Our husbands enjoyed themselves it seems by all the chatter coming from their end of the table… and of course us girls could go on forever…

It’s so nice to be able to reconnect after 20 years for some of us… and just pick up like it was yesterday… I call that true friendship

Peggy, Dorothy, Leslie, Georgia, Marilyn…

We plan on making this an annual little reunion… and Mike Lennig’s can remain the spot… It was “just right”
