The weather is perfect!

Autumn is in the air… football games abound…

( Been listening to our Louisville Cardinals game on TV…

thoughts of cooler days for sure…

and Holidays that bring us fun times

I got the itch to finish a few Halloween items that I place around the house…

I don’t do nearly as much as I used to… Boys are grown…

But, a few items for the Grandkids and ourselves… to look at and hopefully enjoy!

First Day of Autumn… Today!… September 22, 2012…

and it definitely feels like t here in Louisville

Cool air… partly sunny… kids playing outside… people out talking in the neighborhood…

It’s a friendly time I think… A calm after such a hot summer… I even breathe better…with the cooler air…

I’ve been wanting to have a yard sale… Get rid of the things that have accumulated again… I say again… because it seems to happen again… and again… Collecting things I don’t need or want anymore…

So this is also a good time to get out the Fall items I put out…

I used to go all out… when the boys were little… and then I carried on the tradition when the Grandkids came… But, now I do what I feel like doing… A much smaller scale… but still festive

Right now Halloween is approaching… I like the Fun Halloween over the Scary… Mostly Autumn decorations… with a little Halloween… I do inside and out…

 Centerpiece for coffee table…

My wood duck couple… harvesting their pumpkins…

A gourd grown by my husband’s brother many, many years ago…

My cute black cat candle holder… with his piece of candy corn…

A jingle bell jack-o-lantern given to me by a friend on a trip to Nashville, Indiana… A great place for shopping and viewing the change of color in the leaves…

Another candle holder… Actually I have a pair of these… with their metal witches hats… They are so cute when lit at night…

My new Fall salt/pepper shakers I bought at a Cracker Barrel on a trip I took recently to see a blogging friend… I named the squirrel “Pepper” to make it easier to remember which is salt… and which is pepper…

Another candle holder for my kitchen table… It has such cute details…

and another view follows…

Placements for kitchen table…

Kitchen table… table runnerBlack CatFrankenstein…

and…

Jack-o-lantern and Mummy…So fun!

Just enough!…

Outside we go… I found this pretty “new” Autumn flag at the Thrift Store… My others were getting a little worn…

Pretty yellow and red Mums for my front porch pots…

A cute Wind Sock to hang on our swing… blowing in the breeze…

A metal Jack-o-lantern near the back deck…

Just a little plastic “Jack-o-lantern” for the flower bed that has no more flowers…

Flowers are dwindling… A little wood stake to replace them…

and another one…

I’ve stuffed all the orange lights I had inside this big plastic pumpkin… I believe he’s pretty old… Found at my favorite “Unique” Thrift… He should be pretty lit at night… greeting all of the Trick or Treaters on Halloween…

A Metal Jingle Bell Halloween Wreath tied with a spider web bow hangs on the hook by the front walk… It now replaces the flowers that have since withered…

and finally the wreath I redid to add some life into something I’ve had a long time…

a Spider…

a Black Cat…

 a Mummy…

Happy Halloween…

“Squeals of Delight!”

I’ve figured out something about Holidays …Without children ...they just aren’t as much fun!… The twinkle we see in the eyes of children … How their smiles just emerge and light their faces … The excitement in their voices… That magical giggle that radiates from their throats … That unreserved motion in their bodies… as if they just can’t be still … The joy as they express without any reservations as to what they expect …be it a certain costume at Halloween… “I’m going to be a …!” , as they demonstrate the sounds or look of the creature they want to be…  be it a dessert of Thanksgiving… “I just love pumpkin pie with cool whip”!  … as they almost lick their lips telling you about it… be it a special toy they’ve been looking at in the Christmas Catalog … because if you’re a good little girl or boy… Santa   will bring you what you have wished for… Children jump and hop almost as much as the Easter Bunny in anticipation of finding an Easter Basket full of candies or maybe a stuffed fuzzy bunny to snuggle up to … There will be hearts drawn on everything… pink and red …with “I LOVE YOU!”   printed on most of them… Valentine’s made from cut out red or pink construction paper with white doilies glued behind them… The prettiest things they have ever seen as their hands clap and touch their faces… Leprechauns have nothing on kids as they dance a jig and make green shamrocks for good luck… St.Patrick’s Day is indeed magical to them!… Summer vacation brings squeals of happiness as they jump into the swimming pool for the first time  … shivering, but, never admitting they are cold… Even that first day of school… shopping for those new pencils, red, green and blue folders and colorful crayons just waiting to be opened and used for the first time… It seems if we would look at children…we would realize their joy can always remain within us … Just smile, giggle, dance , shiver, clap, hop, make something pretty and even squeal with delight

It may be contagious!

“My Kids!”…
It started in August… first day of school… Happy faces for the most part … getting off the school buses… in our case, the little buses … for Special Ed kids … As soon as you saw them, you had to smileso sweet… so friendly… so chatty…and so enthused to be at school…Here they would busy, go places and get lots of attention!… so they were excited!… It spilled over onto us… Of course within about two months… Halloween arrived… we would dress in costumes… make Jack-o-lantern cakes in our Bake Shop and have games and activities … They loved it! … Showing it by wanting us to paint their faces, talk of costumes and pumpkin patch field trips… enjoyed by all!… Thanksgiving was a busy time in our Bake Shop…with Pumpkin and Pecan pies being baked…and the smells wafting through the halls …Talk of turkeys and eating dinner at their Grandparents…What a joy watching them describe what they did… Christmas of course was time for a break…but, not before decorating a tree , talking of all the ways different people celebrated this special time, musical concerts… and our Holiday Bazaar… The anticipation of being off from school and a visit from Santa … A winter time delight … Valentine’s Day brought out the pink, red and white construction paper with heart-shaped patterns and decorations… Small Conversation Heart shaped candies  were found everywhere…reading what each one said… The fun as they expressed their like for a certain student…very typical!… March brought out the Leprechaun’s and green shamrockspots of gold were talked bout and rainbow’s  drawn on every piece of paper they could find… We discussed how the colors of the rainbow were called, ROY G BIVred, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet and we taught it like it was new for all of us…. April brought Spring, the Easter Bunny and candy being brought to school and found in their desks… just hoping no melted Bunnies would be found… School ended with the anticipation of summer and fun-filled, sunny days… Smiles becoming more contagious as we all were ready for a break… A few squeals of delight could be heard as students and teachers left at that time I told you it could be contagious!

“Which Holiday Is It?”

It’s really hard to concentrate on one Holiday for all the merchandise that is out for the other Holidays… Right now should be Halloween , but Thanksgiving  and Christmas paraphernalia is all over the place!… Biding space with three different Holidays probably has merchants going crazy… You start to look at Costumes and Spooky Decorations and all of a sudden you are in a row with Turkeys and Cornucopias … and then you practically bump into a Christmas Tree and a Manger with a Baby Jesus Figurine  sitting beside Santa … The kids are getting confused...”What Holiday did you say it was, Mom?”… Do I want candy corn , a frozen turkey or mistletoe? … Please!… just give me a week at least to shift from one Holiday to the next… My Jack-o-lantern  has a Snowman carved on it… My Cornucopia is filled with Stocking Stuffers and my Christmas Tree is decorated with little White Paper Ghosts  and Orange Lights… Is anyone else as confused as me?

“My Kids!”…

When seasons changed or Holidays came around …our students would definitely know which one it was…We did this by our calendar … Having the dates clearly labeled and a jack-o-lantern attached to October 31st for Halloween… Happy New Year horns/confetti on January 1st … A Valentine heart on February 14th , etc. … Our bulletin boards  depicted the season or a theme of a Holiday on them also… We were never confused as long as we were at school…and it helped us also to stay focused on one thing at a time… I believe with all the Holiday hype running into each other in the stores …on TV …on the Radio…in magazines and newspapers …it has taken away some of the joy that each Holiday was meant to bring to people… I liked the way we embraced each special Holiday at school… Maybe more slowly paced…but, our kids knew the meaning of each Holiday and why it was celebrated … We had so much more fun… as we carved a funny face on a pumpkin , put fruits and vegetables in our paper cornucopias and decorated our little pine tree with homemade ornaments in shapes of reindeer , stars , snowmen and bells ... Isn’t that the way it should be?
