Daily Prompt: Generation XYZ

Think about the generation immediately younger or older than you. What do you understand least about them — and what can you learn from them?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us AGE.

I feel like I’m in-between two generations…

with a teenager sleeping on my couch… u21182167

She has her own room… but the couch in the living area is her favorite spot… unless she is REALLY sleeping on a day off… then to bed she goes….

That’s my granddaughter… 19 years of age…

She works at night… up into the morning… and then comes to Grandma and Poppy’s to sleep before she goes to her classes at college…

She lives in another town that’s just too far to keep traveling back and forth… so this is our arrangement…

I asked her last night… “Don’t you get tired of having to come here with us instead of going home?”

She answered, “I like it here!”… with that purely honest little face looking up at me…

524902_279215528857108_1442004122_n

I was glad to hear that of course… I like having my time with her too…

Her generation has much to contend with…

You hear so much of the troubles… from gangs, alcohol, drugs, sex… The list goes on and on…

k10550512 Thank goodness… She is here … has her friends k6972014 … family k11519591… work and school…

Maybe that makes the difference…

We have praised her accomplishments…

Her parents have involved her in outside activities since she was little…

and we have all learned that respecting each other and having open conversation is the best!…

I have learned from my Granddaughterhard work and determination… the things she has seen and taken with her into her life already… to help her future… Being her own person… but, aware of other’s feelings…

Independent is always what I use as the word to describe her!… 131375_280643042047690_1716523618_o

On the other side of me is a group of elderly people and “special needs

people that I work with now at my new job… k2596151

We discuss and talk daily… so, I get a real picture of their needs… desires… and regrets…

They live in their memoriesGCR0007

So I have learned that “making memories” is what we need to do…

Make them so special… so sweet… so wonderful… that we can rely on them in our future years…

Make many friends… keep busy… talk… and continue to grow…

and most of all…

keep learning k13177899  …  As I gave a program today about “The Chinese New Year“… I heard so many say, “I didn’t know that!”… and they seemed to enjoy that fact

that they had learned something new…

k10238926

Smiles were on their faces… and were asking if I would be back… and what would we be doing tomorrow…

Their comments are teaching me… and keeping me on my toes!

I think I might have the best of 3 worlds right now!

Young adult… my life… older seniors…

Dreams… Contentment… Memories …

How lucky I am!

Daily Prompt: Mentor Me

Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson you learned from him or her?

I guess you could say I was a mentor

I was a Teacher Assistant… later called a Paraprofessionalsps0427for 30 + years…

We were to instruct (teach) our Special Needs Students… under the guidance of the Teacher in charge…

I stayed in that profession as I said… for many yearsk0675493

People asked me…”Why don’t you go back to school and become a teacher?”…

“You already know how to do most everything there is to teach”…

k3995106

and my answer was, “I like my position!”…

I like implementing the assigned work prepared by the Teacher…

cfr0121

I like being able to give one on one instruction to our students

I liked following them to classes where they were mainstreamed into classes with the “regular” students…

I liked taking care of their needs… either physical or mental

k0675494

I liked the freedom I found with the wonderful teachers I worked with…

I liked the repertoire I had with the kids parents…x10724768

I liked that I was doing a service that all would not like… and even heard others say, “I could never do that!”…”That requires such patience!” vmo0891

I mentored by teaching these special childrenmath, grammar, spelling, reading, science, phys ed, art, geography, writing and training them in situations that they being… “special” … would encounter in their lives…

k10656421 k10224365

The teachers became friends… not just co-workers

My mentors were the fantastic teachers I had the pleasure of working with… They taught me… as I taught the students in their class…

I learned so much!…

k7386937

Things I would never had been in touch with if I hadn’t been placed in my position…

I thank the Lord every day for my experiences I was taught at the hands of some very good teachers

and the smaller mentors (the kids I had the pleasure of working with)…

I tell everyone… THEY… these special kids

Taught me… as I was teaching them!…k0662770

They taught me…

self-reliance…

strength…

determination…

caring…

fortitude…

and love…k5113531

and I thank them in my heart every day for the lessons learned!

Daily Prompt: Teachable Moment

You have to learn a new skill. Do you prefer to read about it, watch someone else do it, hear someone describe it, or try it yourself?

Oh, let’s see…

I will have to get right into it

Get messy… dirty… try it my way… and sometimes learn the hard way

I remember the time we bought a new car… A little dark brown Chevette… Just big enough for us to get in… with the two boys in back k6674522

chev_00709l

It was a hatch back… so it was useful for hauling things… something we could afford… and it lasted us well…

We made many trips in it… some to Georgia lots to Georgia… because that’s where my husband is from…

That was our only vacation for many years… but, loved it!…

Now to get back to this teachable moment

We loved the color… the car itself… but, it had no aircof0658 … Not many did at this time… That was a luxury!…

And then the main thing I found fault with …was that it was straight stick… You know… clutch… and I had never driven one…

k8759474k9702310k4654845

Well… I’ll take that back… When I was first learning to drive… my brother-in-law did take me out for a lesson and I had no clue what he meant when he said clutch… brake… and this had to be done in some kind of sequence… After almost running into the stone posts k5121725 k5121725 my Dad had meticulously made at the end of our driveway… I had no more lessons with a stick… as they called it…

And now… my husband wants to buy a new car with the same contraption…

He promised he could teach me… u25513350

He didn’t know me too well at that time…

I was awful!…

and I began to hate our new little car…

There was this thing about being on a hillk1222446 … that terrified me!k5676109

and then there were railroad crossings k1519893 … and then there were parking garages that went around and around and up hill

Bobby kept trying… but, we probably had more “unkind” words during this time than all of our 44 years of marriage…

I decided the only way to learn how to drive this beast… was to do it on my own

It’s a wonder there was a clutch k8759474 left in the car before I finally mastered the technique…

The reason I learned finally… was probably because my Daddy had numerous heart attacks and I had to take my Mom to the hospital to be with him every day k0723150 … and she didn’t drive… Well…only in the country when she was growing up… (never had a license)…

I would pray for no red lights on hillsno one to be in front or back of me on the ramps that led us into the parking garagekle0088

Please Lord…”Let me just get there…  park… and then be able to go down without any trouble” …

The Lord and I had many prayers flowing back and forth at this time

k12732505

maybe it was He who finally taught me … gave me my “teachable moment”

He was probably the only one with patience to do it! …k1554734

“Determined to Learn!”

Memory…

It’s funny… I had a dream last night about my blogging  I was saying I wanted to publish it… the writings about “My Kids”… Not my kids per say… but the kids I worked with for so long… my “Special” kids … I guess you could say this is at the top of myBucket List“… I look at dreams sometimes like answers to my uttermost desires , needs and wants… “God like” They seem real with the answers I get sometimes… This time I got the message that there are different ways to getting something published… Maybe blogging my past blog with a new title or new look… Who knows?… I hear “There’s different ways of doing things!” so clear… I told you it was a dream , but I keep going over it in my mind… I will take the time to address this issue more… Pursue avenues I haven’t even thought of… We’ll see… I do know as I was trying to text today  … my son said, “I guess that’s your new thing!”… Isn’t it wonderful that he noticed!… that I pursue new things every day… try new things every day… I will grow until I die… There’s so much in this world… We have to try to reach a few goals that will make our lives fulfilled…complete… Sometimes I almost bust with the desire to learn new things… So instead of bursting … I will attempt to fill my heart and soul with all I can… I only wish I had these feelings earlier in life… but, no regrets from me!… that would be such a waste of time … Today is now and the hope of a tomorrow will keep me determined! …and I will add to my “Bucket List”  I’m sure!
