Not a House Divided Tree… U of L All the Way!

Living in Louisville Kentucky… You would think everyone would be a Louisville Cardinal fan…UL

Not so… the Kentucky Wildcats uk in Lexington draw an immense following also… from Louisville rsidents…

It’s Blue vs. Red… Cards vs. Kats… thumb Uof L vs. Uof K…

actually called “house divided” at timesUK 3 … due to family members taking opposite sides…

I never went to either of these universities… so my loyalty had to be chosen… and I seem to sway for the Cardinal Birds of Louisville…418160_310389649078482_820614589_n

My computer room is decorated with University of Louisville WallpaperCardinals sit here and there… https://babyjill7.wordpress.com/2013/02/15/daily-post-a-room-of-my-own/

So when I decided to put up a little Christmas Tree in this room… for me to enjoy during the season… I decided on a Cardinal theme… using what I had left over in decorations…

White lights already on…

red ornaments of course… 131112_004131112_003131112_005

and then a few homemade U of L ones to add that Card theme I started…

I remembered we did this at school… when we made these kind of trees to raffle at our Holiday Bazaar… pretty much “house divided” back then with people buying chances…

I printed Cardinal Pictures on photo paper…

Cut out to look like ornaments…

Punched hole at top… added black ribbon…

Simple… no fuss…and my Jill loves it…

Before Card Ornaments were put on she had found her a spot!

Actually her favorite perch… Low enough to lay beside and look out the window…

The Fair Came Last week

Louisville has a big State Fair

Animals, crafts, concerts, food, rides k10322270 , displays…

We weren’t going this year… The cost of getting in is $10.00 a person + $8.00 to park…

$28.00 just to get in… and then you smell all of the food cooking and want something like a foot long corndog k0087791x13582244… or a funnel cake u13484842 k4242260or a fresh squeezed “Lemonade Shakeup”… k10651277 or ice cream… or a Pork Chop Sandwich k4158059

Well, you get the picture!

There are displays selling everything!

Clothes, jewelery, pot/pans, leather items , glass items, things I’ve never seen before…

It really is quite overwhelming!

I was on Facebook… when a nephew of mine said he had two tickets that included parking for $10.00… 4561v1-max-150x150

That I could handle!

Late in the day… and the last day… but, I wanted to go…

You have to know why…

My husband and I met at the Kentucky State Fair… September 1968… and were married February 1969…

5 months of knowing someone… my Dad was about to have a fit!…

Not that we had just known each other for such a short time… but, that he was leaving for Viet Nam in March….

NOW, I grasp what my Dad was thinking…

but, LOVE conquered and we were married…

So, you see why I “need” to go whenever I can!…

It will be 45 years… this February-2014…

So, we went and walked and looked and talked…

We didn’t eat… because we had a good dinner with our kids before we left… and the only thing I bought was  some eye-glass/ jewelery cleaner

Didn’t need that!… but, it worked so good!

Better than food that would go straight to my behind!… is the way I looked at it!

Our short visit was very nice… the smells… the atmosphere… the memories…

One of my students from when I was at middle school…

She is just a doll… (Special Needs Class)… she was 11- or 12 … now I guess in her 30’s… Her Mom and Dad sell Glass Figurines at the Fair every year…

so good seeing her… She had her face painted with a pretty purple design… her favorite color!

She hollers, “Mrs. Griffin!”… every year when I stop by for a visit…

It was a fun evening… and just long enough…

Kentucky Derby: Derby Celebration Wreath!

I chose to reblog about the events of Derby Time here in Kentucky … from a blog I did in May 2011… (my previous blog)… Take a look!

https://babyjill7.wordpress.com/2013/04/15/special-events-at-derby-time-2/

It pretty much depicts all of the events we have going on… Not all of them of course… The list goes on and on… We usually hit a few… Being older… no little ones at home anymore… but, TV does a pretty good captioning of everything!

The only event I would say… that requires you being there… is “Thunder Over Louisville” Thunder_logo …The fireworks display on the Ohio River … which is our “downtown” Louisville…

Thunder_over_louisville_2006

It is done on a bridge that crosses over into Indiana

The noise… the smells… the people… just has to be experienced for itself…

The booms from the fireworks is just like being in a thunderstorm without the rain… It’s deafening!… and makes your body just shake… and your heartbeat seems to explode in your chest…

My Forsythia Wreath has been transformed into a Derby Celebration… to hang on my door and greet visitors…

Daily Post: A Room Of My Own

I’m not unhappy with my little room that I have acquired to write my blogs… it was a small bedroom before this…

It’s not exactly like I would want it… but, I have a computer table… chair…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

phone… file cabinet… light… drawers for “stuff”… waste basket

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

a small radio to listen to soft music…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

a retro clock found at my thrift store… just seemed to fit…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

my camera for my photos I want to take… pens/pencils/paper/ruler etc. …  a printer…

A stool for Jill , my cat…  where she can look out of the one window… It let’s in enough light… and gives me a view of our front yard…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A bulletin board with stick pins (made by me)… holds a framed quilt piece that reads…

Families are like old quilts…

Although they tend to unravel at times…

Each can be stitched back together…

With Love!

This was given to me as a gift from my cousin…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I can hear my family near by… and I like that!

An extra chair in here also belongs to Jill… She has claimed it as hers to nap on…

along with her throw…

I upholstered the seat cushion in a red/black plaid ( can’t see in photo)

and made a little skirt for my computer table to match… to hide the hard drive and wires…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

closet holds things I have for the grandkids to play with… paper… boxes… crayons/paint/brushes… wrapping paper/ ribbons… It certainly could be organized better…

Family photos adorn one wall… making me smile every time I see them…

The wallpaper has the wordsUniversity of Louisville in red on a gray background

so the decor has a Cardinal + theme

Cardinal pictures I also made…

and a Room To Call My Own…

My Version of the “Derby Fascinator”!

The Kentucky Derby will be on May 5, 2012 this year… It’s always the first Saturday in May… Living in Kentucky at this time is quite special!… There’s The Hot Air Balloon Race … The Steamboat Race on the Ohio River… a new boat “American Queen”  will be competing with our “Belle of Louisville” and the “Belle of Cincinnati”… The Pegasus Parade  … The Chow Wagon… The Run for the Rose’… Bedlam… Thunder Over Louisville  …and that’s just to name a very few of the activities and events

Today the YMCA that I belong to… had a Derby Luncheon… The cost is minimal… There were probably around 30 of us that attended… The lunch consisted of baked chicken, BBQ Pork , Green Beans, Mashed potatoes, 7-Layer Salad, Macaroni Salad and Hot Rolls… Delicious!… Tea, Coffee and Water to drink… Pecan  and Apple Pie + Chocolate Chip Brownies for dessert… Delicious!

There were guessing games about  facts of the Kentucky Derby … It’s funny how you go “blank” until you hear the answers and we all say, “Oh , Yeah!… I knew that!”… Each time someone got a right answer they were to take a Silk Red Rose  from vases on the tables… The one with the most Roses won… No, I didn’t win… but, I did get 1 Rose… We had Horse Racing… with Paper Horses colored by the YMCA Daycare… So cute!… I won this race … only to find out the winner was the one who came in last BUMMER!… but, cute idea… They received a Derby Cup with the names of the Last Place Finishers of each Derby

Later… I did have to compete with the runner-up of the race I had thought I won… and this time I did win and a Garland of Red Silk Roses was placed around my neck… Just like the winning Derby horse receives  … Although they get REAL Red Roses… a blanket to be exact… crafted by ladies… stitching on one rose at a time the night before the race…

Some of us participated by wearing Derby Hats fashioned any way we wanted… I made my sister-in-law’s and mine… similar to the “Fashionista” Hats  worn at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding  in England … They were actually called “Fascinators”… Basically a headband with feathers, a flower, ribbons and Derby symbols… They turned out quite cute… but, we didn’t win… another “Bummer”… because I felt we were deserving… Oh, well… I’ll just have to wear my little hat on Derby Day and hope it brings me luck in picking the winner  …

“The Winning Hat!”

“Another Creation!”

“More Pretty Ladies!”

“Cardinal” Crazy or Not?

Gift…

I have a little computer room decorated with “Louisville Cardinal   wallpaper and a “few” decorative U of L items… No, I’m not one of the Cardinal’s crazy fans … I like them because they represent my city… Louisville, Kentucky … But, mainly I just love our state bird… the Cardinal!  … I found the neatest little kerosene/oil lamp today in my rummaging at my favorite thrift store… It was 25% off today… Mondays… all the time… and Thursdays if you have your special “Unique”  discount card which is free… This little lamp is 9″ tall… just right for my small black wrought iron shelf…   and decorated with a Cardinal Bird of course… It was made in Japan …”It says so on the bottom!” Brightly painted with the bird embossed on what looks like a wood stump… An amber-colored little glass chimney… Never has been used… and no chips or cracks… I feel as if I’m describing it to sell on EBAY …but, not at the moment… I think I’m keeping this little lamp for me and my “Cardinal” room for now… I did look up this little lamp on EBAY and found only one listed… It was with another one with a Blue Bird design making it a pair … Also the ones on EBAY have small shades on them… which matches the wood looking stump… Mine is missing the shade which would have been neat, but I still think mine is quite unique… If I hadn’t looked it up… I would have never known!… Just too nosey I guess!  … I did find out that these quaint miniature lamps along with other ceramic pieces were made by the company of WALES  in Japan … These stickers are rarely found on a piece… because they are so easily rubbed off… This company was trying its hand at lower cost imports… Back in the 1950’s they were not doing so well… but, later it seems we started buying these items and now think of them as quite special in their own right…  At least, I like my “Cardinal Bird”  lamp   … even if it is not complete!

“The Kentucky Derby”…a Creative Time!

My Grandson is going to be in a Derby Race …you note…I didn’t say THE Derby Race …but, a race…He is in kindergarten…and they are having a mini race celebrating one our city’s favorite times of year…”The Kentucky DerbyHe needed a horse   and a jockey cap…With more time we probably could have done better…but, on short notice…my daughter-in-law, Carson and I created a Derby Horse and Cap to remember…It started with a shower curtain rod  , a photo of a horse’s head off the computer, green curly ribbon, a $2.00 black cap , a hole puncher and stapler…Now if you had these items as your materials even YOU could make a horse…oh, yeh!…and lots of imagination!…now, the teacher said a theme for your horse would be nice…Good Idea!…Carson came up with his theme right away…anything to do with “Army” His choice and this was HIS project…So after cutting out our horses head …we punched holes along the mane  and ran “Army” Green ribbon through to make a mane…The tail  was long curly green ribbon also…we attached the head to the end of the pole with staples and tied on the flowing tail…it was beginning to look like a horse…He climbed on and pretended to ride…Kennedy’s comment was,”It looks like a girl horse!”…with the curly ribbon flowing for the tail and mane…Expecting Carson to be upset…he just said, There are both kinds of horses running in the Derby …boys and girls!” His Mom reassured him a Filly  which was what a female horse is called…could run just as fast…He was fine with that!…The hat project was unique…How to coordinate the army theme here?…So after running camouflage look paper   off the computer…we made goggles for his hat with that…Carson chose pictures depicting Army themes to attach to his hat…even a picture of himself dressed in his Army outfit from Halloween …He finished his project off with choosing a name for his wonderful “Race” horse…”Sergeant”…appropriate I thought…a strong name for a racing horse…He assured me he was going to be the winner of the contest…and as his Grandma…I assured him I thought He should be…at least for creativity!

“My Kids!”…

I do believe the teachers  at school loved Derby time better than the students…well, it was toss up!…There were numerous activities going on …”Run for the Kool-Aid” …”A parade of floats” made of shoe boxes , “Stick Horse” races, “Derby hat” creations, Coloring contest to design “Silks for the Jockeys” and “Balloon” races to represent the Hot Air Balloons  that were released at the Fairgrounds… …The Bake Shop was busy with cupcake orders and once we even made “Hoseshoe Cakes” with red roses to sell…quite pretty!…Our students made Derby Hats at the historical Louisville Water Tower  art classes…They were awesome!…What I love about our city is that we have so many great traditions…These we tried to pass down to our students in a fun way…Our history lessons about Louisville  and visits to the Kentucky Derby Museum, our math lessons on distance that a race horse runs and language arts classes with spelling words  like…JOCKEY< DERBY< KENTUCKY< FLOATS< BALLOON < PARADE> ROSES>SILKS>HORSES>…and short story writing about what the students had learned about their city… became unique with our imaginations flowing…I believe maybe a “Most Creative Award” should have been given to us!
