“Floating Into Another World!”

I’ve been walking forward and backwards, doing jumping  jacks , leg lifts, neck stretches, arm twirls, leg twirls , squats, toe stretches, finger stretches, waist bends  and twists, wiggled my hips, crisscrossed my legs and feet, pulled in my stomach, looked at the ceiling with my head tilted back, pulled my shoulders up and down, done kicks  in all directions with my legs, had my arms up, down and around, turned my ankles in four positions, laid on my back lifting my legs, stretched out on my stomach , hugged myself, patted my self on the back, waved my hands, went in circles, and then reversed and went the other way, my knees have gone right and then they’ve gone left, I’ve laughed and hollered and even went up and down stairs… All of this as I listened to some loud music  on a boom box…

Thank goodness… this was all done in a swimming pool … or I wouldn’t be able to sit here and even type…I’d be in the hospital probably!…It’s amazing how exercising in water makes all of the above so easy… It’s like having no weight at all… Having no aches and pains… Being more limber than I’ve ever been… Everything is so effortless… If I had known exercise could be this fun and easy...with no pain…I might have tried it sooner…

There are probably 35 of us with the same goals… same reasons… same feelings… and we are doing something about it together… They say “misery likes company”…but, if your misery turns into fun and enjoyment  … not looking at each other as to where we are now… but, thinking of how we’ll be in the near future… How wonderful is that!

I highly recommend a work out in water… it’s like floating into another world … with a smile on your face!

“Track Those Minutes!”

I keep thinking of trying to get into an exercise regime …but, one problem…I hate the word exercise… and to commit to something is so not me… I like to walk… so I thought I might try again to start walking in the park … something to look at while doing this thing I hate… I used to do that and even enjoyed it… of course it won’t be long until it’s cold outside … then rainy … and then snowy … Do you hear me?… because I hear myself… Making excuses… So I’ll keep thinking about it and maybe come up with a nice warm, safe, interesting, peaceful place to try to exercise…but, now I think I’m going back to bed … it’s just been too much exercise on my brain so early this morning… Maybe tomorrow

“My Kids”!

Since we were supposed to set a good example for our students…we tried to have some kind of exercise routine  for our class…We watched videos geared for our kids to watch and do some fun, funky exercises … They were sometimes into it and sometimes not … We would go to the gym and walk a certain amount of laps and then play basketball , jump rope or play a game of kickball… Usually the more organized game of kickball  was met with more interest than anything… Our students also had gym(PE) classes for quite a few years…but, then can you believe it?… they discontinued it… No wonder our kids are obese and lack energy … Now, of course they are seeing how wrong they were and are trying to come back with what they want us to believe is a … “Magic Cure”… If they had left things alone to begin with…we would still be enjoying some exercise…we just called it “playing”  dodge ball, jump rope, chase, pitch and catch, etc. … No wonder kids balk about exercise, just like me…they think of it more as a job than something fun to do… Don’t forget to track how many laps you made…how many minutes it took you to do that… how fast you are… See what I mean???

“No Respect!”

Have you ever been told to relax? …Well I have been relaxing…Why? …Because I’m taking a muscle relaxer   to relieve some pain with my sciatic nerve …I will tell you it helps immensely…but, I haven’t slept so much in a long time …I took a nap today …only to get up and feel more tired …so I believe the muscle relaxer will have to be postponed until I absolutely need it…The drug I’m taking (Flexeril)…blocks nerve impulses…along with rest and physical activity…it can help…I do believe it impairs my thinking and reactions  somewhat…and definitely causes me to be drowsy …I had never been to a chiropractor   …but, I have to admit it seemed to help…another treatment tomorrow and I will know if it really is helping …I can be so skeptical…but, in this situation…I’m going in with an open mind … By now…some of my friends are already laughing…

Yes, it does impair your judgement!

Yes, you know how to relax!

Yes, sleeping is a side effect!

Yes, your nerve has been compromised!

Yes, physical activity may help you…but, you have to do it…before it will help!

Yes, your reactions and thinking are compromised, but we already knew that a long time ago!

Yes, you can go in with an Open Mind…because there was nothing there to begin with!

So as Rodney Dangerfield   would say, I’m hurting and still

“I get No respect!”

“My Kids!”…

How many times I had to tell our special students to just relax…sit down and be quiet…Some of our kids didn’t know how to be still!…Some never truly relaxed at night …They were up doing anything but, sleeping and relaxing …Some played on the computer… A LOT!…some played certain games…like it was an obsession…  Some just couldn’t rest for having seizures …Moms and Dads up all night worrying about their precious child …and then still having to go to work the next day…Then that’s when we came into the picture…The child would arrive having had no sleep…tired  …sometimes hungry…irritable…and after about an hour, were fast asleep or having to be told to sit up and listen…try to concentrate as we were trying to do our job of teaching them …These children were wonderful kids…but, some needed some sort of medication  …As always this is a trial and error process…as it is with any person…But, until it is triedobserved and understood what is needed…the child or person suffers …So I guess I’m defending the call for meds sometimes…but, if found to not be the right fit…look further and try not to give up the quest for help   …This is having respect   for your child and for yourself…and both deserve it!

“Exercise Stories!”

I’m not sure who has inspired me more…my sister or my great niece…My sister has brought her granddaughter to our Take Off Pounds Sensibly meeting to inspire her to lose a few pounds  …She is just a little girl…Elementary School…Big for her age maybe…but, cute as a button…and after seeing her in action last night a smart cookie!…I praise my sister for loving her so much that she has taken on herself to bring her to the meetings…helping her in her food selectionsencouraging her…But, I have to give credit to this sweet little girl for inspiring  all of us last night…Yes!…she has lost  in only one week of attending…But, what I want to tell you about is the special exercise program she made up by herself …to help her exercise daily…She got up in front of all of the ladies in our club and showed us…She came up with a story…In this story she stretches …she walk/runs…she reaches…she bends…she twists…We had a workout with her as she demonstrated…Her story is about daily experiences that she made up…In this story she walks out to the barn…milks a cow, picks cherries from a tree …makes ice cream , cleans up her room, gives her room a good scrubbing, she bakes cookies …all the time using this story to exercise by…What an imagination!…What insight for such a young person…to come up with her own Exercise Program…But, most of all…How inspirational  !…The ladies in our group of weight watchers  were highly impressed…and I will keep that little demonstration in my mind for many days…I think I’ll try making up my own story to exercise by…but, I’ll never come up with one that showed such determination as did Elisha’s last night!

“My Kids!”…

Sometimes our kids at school could be quite lazy …actually I think they came in tired…You could tell some of our kids had not had any sleep  the night before…they couldn’t keep their eyes open no matter what we tried…so we would have to have them sleep for a while just to begin the day…This was probably because of lack of supervisionwatching TV , playing video games …talking to friends on the phone…all night…So, when morning came they were exhausted…Maybe the parents didn’t even know…kids can be sneeky !…We had a pretty structured routine…and at times our plans were having to be changed to accommodate the kind of day our kids were having…If anything, you found out how to be very flexible in a classroom setting …Sometimes to inspire a little energy we would put in exercise videos …One, was pretending to play different kinds of instrumentsbeating drums, playing a tuba, a guitar, a piano  …Marching in a band…All of a sudden we had a full-fledged band  playing in our classroom…It was fun to watch how some of the kids got into playing their pretend instruments without even knowing they were exercising…How inspiring!
