My Version of the “Derby Fascinator”!

The Kentucky Derby will be on May 5, 2012 this year… It’s always the first Saturday in May… Living in Kentucky at this time is quite special!… There’s The Hot Air Balloon Race … The Steamboat Race on the Ohio River… a new boat “American Queen”  will be competing with our “Belle of Louisville” and the “Belle of Cincinnati”… The Pegasus Parade  … The Chow Wagon… The Run for the Rose’… Bedlam… Thunder Over Louisville  …and that’s just to name a very few of the activities and events

Today the YMCA that I belong to… had a Derby Luncheon… The cost is minimal… There were probably around 30 of us that attended… The lunch consisted of baked chicken, BBQ Pork , Green Beans, Mashed potatoes, 7-Layer Salad, Macaroni Salad and Hot Rolls… Delicious!… Tea, Coffee and Water to drink… Pecan  and Apple Pie + Chocolate Chip Brownies for dessert… Delicious!

There were guessing games about  facts of the Kentucky Derby … It’s funny how you go “blank” until you hear the answers and we all say, “Oh , Yeah!… I knew that!”… Each time someone got a right answer they were to take a Silk Red Rose  from vases on the tables… The one with the most Roses won… No, I didn’t win… but, I did get 1 Rose… We had Horse Racing… with Paper Horses colored by the YMCA Daycare… So cute!… I won this race … only to find out the winner was the one who came in last BUMMER!… but, cute idea… They received a Derby Cup with the names of the Last Place Finishers of each Derby

Later… I did have to compete with the runner-up of the race I had thought I won… and this time I did win and a Garland of Red Silk Roses was placed around my neck… Just like the winning Derby horse receives  … Although they get REAL Red Roses… a blanket to be exact… crafted by ladies… stitching on one rose at a time the night before the race…

Some of us participated by wearing Derby Hats fashioned any way we wanted… I made my sister-in-law’s and mine… similar to the “Fashionista” Hats  worn at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding  in England … They were actually called “Fascinators”… Basically a headband with feathers, a flower, ribbons and Derby symbols… They turned out quite cute… but, we didn’t win… another “Bummer”… because I felt we were deserving… Oh, well… I’ll just have to wear my little hat on Derby Day and hope it brings me luck in picking the winner  …

After clearing out the Christmas… I put together a little “bouquet” for my bathroom with the leftovers …My colors being red, coral and aqua blue… I liked it!

Red Roses … Pink Flamingo… Coral Flower

Little Girl Tea Light Holders

Pink Roses/White Vase/Aqua Blue Base

I find it fun to decorate on a budget… More from necessity at first …now one of my passions!

“A Rose is a Rose is a Rose”

My Mom had a friend we just called “Booker“… She lived around the road from us … about a mile I guess… She was a neat lady… very interesting… She was always a little messy… always had a tale to tell… always had a flower or plant to give to my Mom … She had an overgrown yard filled with the most beautiful flowers  and her house reminded me of a stone cottage … She was married…her husband always seemed old to me …but, I didn’t see him often… He mainly stayed inside the house… I was never really inside the little stone house… but, I sure wanted to … It seemed a little mysterious “Booker” had an ugly bulldogfat and white in color … chained in the back yard… I had no desire to go near him… He was quite scary to me being 4 or 5 years old… This kind neighbor bought a scooter…almost like a golf cart  and she would be-bop up and down the road… going wherever she wanted… She would drop by unexpectedly early in the morning… She might have gotten a sale on bananas at the store and would have to share her bargain… And that is how she was… Friendly, sharing, caring… She knew everyone on our county road … and she loved my Momma…who she called “Nina”… My mom’s name was Hazel Niner…so it seems that last names were used a lot with these friends… When she came by early I remember her eating anything leftover from breakfast … that my Mom had saved just for her in case she came by… and enjoying a hot cup of coffee anytime of year… Later in her life “Booker” bought a van… reminded me of a Hippie Van …and she would buzz around in it just as she had with the scooter… She would take us to the bus line … take my sister to work up at the drug store … She was always available for anyone in need… I started thinking about the Rose  that I have planted in my yard… It has the sweetest fragrance and is a long-stemmed bright red rose “Booker” gave one rose to my Mom, telling her how to get it started… and it grew and grew… When my Mom moved to an apartment  after my Dad passed… she took her Rose and planted it… When Mom moved in with me I transplanted the Rose to my flowerbed … I just recently placed a cutting of it in my sweet unique vase on my windowsill … As I look at it the memories abound as you can see… and by the way, The Rose has a name…”Booker”… with “Hazel” not too far from it only it’s a white Rose … probably should have called it “Nina”…

Gertrude Stein  coined the phrase “A rose is a rose is a rose” meaning…”Things are what they are”… in 1913,  for a poem “Sacred Emily“…

“My Kids!”…

I know Joy, one our Special Ed students didn’t know where the phrase “Stop and Smell the Roses” came from, but she loved using it… and seemed  to at least know the meaning… A cliché“Take Time to Enjoy the Pleasures of Life”… “Take a Little Time for Yourself  EveryDay”… “Don’t Get Too Busy to Enjoy Life”… But it might be a variant on a similar saying, “Stop and smell the flowers” – which is a misquote of advice from the golfer Walter Hagen   that appeared in the 1956 book “The Walter Hagen Story”…

“You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way”.

However this saying began… I’ll always remember it as “Joy’s Advice” as she shared these words of wisdom to those around her… Joy, I hope you… will always have a fragrant rose  to perfume the air around you…

Nicknames…for???

I planted a white rose  for my Mom …this has been around 7-8 years ago…time has away of slipping by  as everyone knows…I bought it and chose white for it’s purity…I love simple things  that show its beauty in the same way…I guess that was Mom…She wasn’t showy …trying to draw attention to herself… but, always seemed to exude energy , beauty, happiness , caring and giving…Looks were not what she tried to impress with…but, in not doing it…she did!…She seemed to have a knack for fixing herself without a lot of trouble …Not a lot of make up …not a lot of jewelry …not a lot of fancy clothes…just inward beauty that showed through…I’ve watched my white rose  every summer get a little stronger…probably getting a better hold with its roots …I’ve watched it trying to bloom with some difficulty at first…I’ve cut it back…sprayed it with bug spray  and powdered it with rose powder to ward off the insects … I almost replanted it…but, was afraid I’d hurt it in the process and then there would be no white rose…This year my rose has grown to be about 3+ feet tall…It has had one beautiful…fragrant…bloom … showing itself to all who see it…I smelled it  and took in the sweet scent …you just want to share its lovely smell…There are 3 more buds with one already showing signs of opening its pure white petals  … When I planted this white rose many years ago…I might have looked at its name…probably something I couldn’t pronounce and certainly not remember… It was a White Rose! …That wasn’t going to be its name anyway…I had a name all picked out…it was to be “Hazel”…So although my Mom has passed away …Her name sake  lives on …and is as beautiful as the person it was named after…

“My Kids!”…

It’s funny how kids name things…Our kids named their dogs , cats , birds, guinea pigs …etc. …Our kids had special names for their grandparents…like “Nana” or “Granny” , parents… like “Mommy” and “Pops”  …brothers and sisters …and parents had special names for their kids…like “Britta” for Brittany…Terms of endearment  I call it…Our kids knew our last names of course…but, it was such a big deal to find out our first names and try to use them…kind of slip it in every now and then… As teachers, it was our job to keep a teacher/student relationship…This is called respect…manners etc. …Of course I wanted to call them “Honey” …”Sweetheart” …”Sweetie”…”Handsome”…so I really had to watch my mouth at times…Mr. Coleman, the other aide in our classroom  was so good at giving the kids nicknames…and did they love it!…It was just part of who he was…”Word Girl    for Brittany…”Sammie” for Samantha… “Ms Cherelle” for one of the aides whose name was Cheryl…”Ms Z” for Mrs Zayas…”Stevie Wonder   for Stevie…”Hot Rod”  for Austin and the list goes on and on…So as you see …nicknames for “White roses” or pets or kids just seem to be the thing to do…I even like it when I’m called “Rose Bud”…
