Don’t Go Away Yet… Summer!

I just read a post by “This Blog Needs A Title”… Yes, that is the actual name of his blog… and that’s what caught my interest… the title …

He expresses his statements simply…

and the last being…

I don’t know… except it has been an unusual summer weather-wise here in Kentucky…

not as many hot days…

not as many sunny days…

lots of rain all of a sudden…

dry days for weeks…

and then starts all over again…

Things I’ve done…

Went on vacation to Savannah… and Tybee Island… Making me want to move there…

I’m really very serious about this… but, no one really believes me…

Have been on numerous short trips to some Casino Hotels…

They pay for the room and the food… So, we take advantage of that… A night away is always good to clean out the cobwebs…

Have lost a family member… a brother-in-law… so sad for my sister and the rest of us… watching this coming about for over a year…

Have had a few lunch dates with my “girl” friends… Enjoying talking… good food… and browsing in shops…

Have kept up my water aerobics… but, weather has hindered that at times…

Have managed to get husband to YMCA… and he wants to join… An achievement I’m happy about!…

Have met so many nice people as acquaintances… and made a few new friends… Isn’t that grand!

and I have obtained a new job… teaching painting classes… That should help me stay busy this winter…

Things I would have liked to do:

Have my Grandkids more… They are busy with trips… ball games… friends… moved a little further away to a new house… Miss them!

Still haven’t zip-lined through the trees…

Still haven’t made it to the drive-in…

Still haven’t lost those pounds…

Still haven’t opened an Etsy Account to sell purses for kids that I like to make…

Still haven’t done a few things (Repairs) around the house we need to make…

Still haven’t got a flowerbed fixed I’ve been wanting to redo…

Summer! … You just need to give me more time!

Could you just hold on for another month or two?

Our Day In Savannah…

Never had been to Savannah… But. I have fallen in love with this lovely Southern City!

So beautiful with the moss hanging from the trees…

We parked under these lovely moss laden trees…

There are 22 park-like squares throughout the city…

Savannah was the first planned city… and this plan is today called “The Oglethorpe Plan“…

and the homes… some huge… but with a classical beauty…

The pastel colors… the laid back atmosphere… the water… the shops… the river traffic…

We watched as this tugboat moved down the Savannah River…

The history… so fascinating…

I will go there again… A one time trip is not enough!…

It was only 20 minutes to Savannah from where we were at Tybee Island…

Loved that!

We viewed the city as we drove through…

I take in all details… the colors, the people, the buildings, the decor…

I knew we wanted to see the Riverfront …

and we found it easily with the directions I had gotten off of a map from the Motel…

We parked… and found the rustic stone/brick steps going down to a lower street level….

As you can see the steps are steep and original…

Immediately… the Savannah River is before you…

We decided to go up one way since we seemed to have come down pretty much in the middle …

We visited several shops… staffed with the friendliest people…

This shop had every type of peanut you could imagine and open cans of each for tasting anything you wanted to try!

I tasted several!

We checked out a Store dedicated to all kinds of Honey… Tasting several as the nice young lady explained where they came from…

Yummy!

We checked out a funky hat store… and It’s there I bought a pair of new sandals… NO, not a hat… I was in for some walking … and my old ones were on their last leg…

I talked to this Artist ( Simba ) who painted on discarded items… Very friendly… origianally from Jamaica and going to school in Savannah…

There were numerous artists along the waterfront and even a lady singing… but, too far away to get a good picture…

We walked and looked in several shops and then decided to quench our thirst at an outside table area of the Dockside Restaurant…

They had Mimosa on special… and so I chose that…

Quite refreshing… Champagne and orange Juice…

Bobby checking out the view as we had a refreshing drink…

We walked and viewed the bridge that crosses the River… and the ships that were docked…

We watched the people and saw two River Paddle Boats…

similar to our Belle of Louisville here in Louisville…

We viewed a memorial for World War II Veterans shaped like a globe… very pretty!…

We sat at benches along the River… and viewed the Open Air Market… full of all kinds of items for sale…

I asked the clerk at one of the shops I liked , “Where is “The Waving Girl” statue“ …I wanted to see this in particular after reading about it… and he said, “You are almost there… just pass the Open Market and where the greenery starts”…

We found her and I just loved it!… It represents Florence Martus (1869-1943) who supposedly greeted the sailors and fisherman returning home … By day she waved a handkerchief and by night a lantern… for 44 years…The staue was created by Felix de Weldon…

Another statue that was made popular by the book and movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil“… called “The Bird Girl“… is replicated in smaller statues in lots of the shops we visited… Very pretty also!… I found out later it was moved from the “Bonaveture Cemetery” to the “Telfair Museum of Art”… Maybe next trip… I’ll get to see it in person…

A Statue depicting a remembrance of the suffering of Slavery was beautiful…

The words of Maya Anjelou were engraved on the base…

We walked and looked until we finally had to give it up…

Hopefully we will be able to make another trip to this beautiful city of Savannah!…

Day #1… Vacation…

It’s taken me a few days to recuperate… Like it says, “I need a vacation to help me get over my vacation!”…
I knew I had walked a lot!…

to the pool…to the shops…to the pier…to the store…to the beach…on the beach…to eat…

and this was all around our hotel…
I liked it!… so handy…
but, I wore out the flip-flops I brought with me…
Bought me a new pair in Savannah…
Needed for sure!…
Our hotel was handy…
Room on first floor – non-smoking- near snack machines/drinks/ice- near front door and right down the hall to the pool…
Everywhere we went the people were so friendly…
but, I know this from going to Georgia for 44 years …

My husband is from Macon… so I have been many times…

My youngest son used to tell my Mom and Dad…”Grandma and Papa… If you visit there… They are going to hug and kiss you!”…

and he was right!

Bobby hadn’t been to Savannah since he was quite young and had no remembrance of it… and never to Tybee Island…

So, when I heard about it from a Facebook friend I knew from school…

I wanted to go!
and proceeded to make plans…
I’ve learned… if you don’t make plans and start on them… it will never happen!…

Leaving around 6:30am… it was quite foggy…

Didn’t take long to hit the Tennessee line…

After a quick pit stop… in Tennessee… we were on our way to Chattanooga…

I was driving… so no photos through there…

Bobby got a Tennessee scratch off ticket and won $100.00… Nice way to start our trip!

Atlanta traffic is always bad!… but, Bobby gets through with little hang ups…

just slow and easy is the way it’s done!

Our first stop was near Griffin, Ga… to spend the night with one of Bobby’s sisters and her husband…

Dinner ready… and delicious!…

Visiting with two of her sons… a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter…

Just love them!

We are totally at home at their house!

The next day after breakfast we headed to Gray , GA… near Macon, where Bobby grew up…

Staying with another sister/husband tonight…

with their daughter/grandson…

and seeing his 3rd sister/husband… their daughter/her son

After hugs and kisses…

and “sweet tea”…

we went to the cemetary of Bobby’s Mom, Dad, two brothers and a nephew…

Since we have been married… he has lost his Mom, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, three brother-in-laws, 1 sister-in-law, a niece and a baby nephew…

Lots of memories were flowing…

We visited another nephew/wife… a friend of my family that has moved to Macon… and my oldest brother and his daughter were visiting her…

Icing on the cake!…

After returning… Jimmy prepared homemade BBQ… slaw… corn on the cob… baked beans… fresh tomatoes… and cake…

Can’t get better than that!

We would be heading out early… Anxious to get to the beach!

Is It Finally Time To Leave???

I guess we are ready to go…
It seems I’ve been going to take this vacation for a month… Well, I probably have…
I had made the reservations over a month ago…
I thought, “If I make the reservations.. it is really going to happen!”…
Vacations for us can’t be made on the spur of the moment…
Money has to be available first thing … and it seems everything tried it’s best to take what we had saved…
car repairs…
house repairs…
and numerous other things…
But, I tried to hold on tight to what I could… after paying all of the bills for the month…
I do feel safe in going… with the car thoroughly checked out…
The house is in order… Even clean!…
Doug will be here to take care of our cat, Jill…
and he is very responsible!…
I only had to get the fridge full and lots of drinks…
If he wants more he will have to go get it!…
He worries a lot … so I left him with all of the numbers and addresses of the places we are staying…
Good idea anyway…
We are packed…

clothes… shoes…toiletries…swim suits/towels… beach chairs…medications…directions… and the car is filled with gas …
And of course this week… gas goes up almost 40 cents on the gallon!…
the cooler has drinks… will put ice in tomorrow morning…
snacks bought… Even if Bobby says , “We don’t need to take any snacks… we can stop”…

As soon as we are a hundred… or less miles away from home…

he asks, “Did you put in any goodies?”
and of course I smile and get him a treat and a drink…
We are visiting 3 sisters of his… in Georgia… on the way down… spending a few nights…
Then to Tybee Island … I mentioned it before in another blog…
Near Savannah Georgia which we hope to tour a little … but, the beach is what I’m looking forward to…
Since we’ve never been… it should be lots of fun checking everything out… and have heard it’s a really nice vacation spot…
We are told we are in walking distance to lots of things … right up our alley as they say!…
Looking forward to blogging about our trip… but, I might be quiet on my site for a few days…

My Summer Plans…

1. Plant more flowers…

2. Go to pool at YMCA more… roof comes off in about a month!

3. Go see my cousin in Illinois again with my husband and whoever else wants to go!

4. Vacation at Tybee Island, Georgia and Savannah with cousin and her husband… God Willing…

including visiting 3 sister-in-laws on the way…

5. Put up a privacy fence near swing area and new porch rails…

6. Take some short trips… including a Zip-line tour through the trees…

7. Going to drive-in… Haven’t been for many, many years… sounds like fun!

8. Going to our beautiful Amphitheatre in Iroquois Park for summer movies…

They are FREE!…

“Wreck It Ralph“, “Psycho”, “Lincoln”, “Ghostbusters“, “The Goonies“…

9. Enjoying times with my kids and grandkids… Cook-outs , etc.

10. Watching my Granddaughter Taylor… graduate from High School…

11. A wedding of a nephew and a 50th Birthday Party for my niece… Fun!

12. A get-away with my sister for at least a night… she deserves it… and we both need it!…

My list grew as I wrote… Isn’t that the way it is!…

Simple Times…but, fun to me… even the work in the yard!

Just A Little Preparation

A friend I’ve known since I first started working at Thomas Jefferson Middle School has been praising a place called… Tybee Island, GA…

My husband… being from Macon

… had never heard of it… Can you believe that!…

I’ve been checking it out on the internet … listening or rather reading what Pam had to say about this unheard-of little place… and she hooked me!…
