Sweet Peas Doing the Twist!

My neighbor has an abundance of Sweet Peas..

This vine reminds me of my mom so much…

Still can picture it climbing… nearly six feet high…

The purple of the flowers was one of my favorites…lathyrus_odoratus1

Since then I have learned there are pink, white, purple, black, cream, orange, red …

even blue! 41HG2Wghd3L__AA160_

It’s name “Sweet Pea”… or Fragrant Pea… derived from the Greek term Lathyrus and the Latin term “Odoratus”…k15500085

I had walked over to my neighbors and while talking … reached down and picked a few seed pods that were dry on her vine of Sweet Peas

I brought them home and laid them on a shelf in my kitchen… thinking I would plant them in a few days…

I looked at them a few days later only to find the pods had twisted dougla0085sand popped open OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA … all of the seeds onto my floor… I salvaged some of them… but, will have to get more it seems…

This time putting them in an envelope to hold them inside… k6810513

They were doing what they normally do

Twisting and throwing the seeds to the surrounding area… to replant themselves for the following year… but, my kitchen floor just wasn’t going to do it!…

I showed them to my husband and he says, “I wondered what that popping sound was that I heard the other day?”…

Evidently when they were hitting the floor!…

My Sunday Gratefuls – July 7, 2013

My company left this morning… heading back to Tennessee

We said good-bye last night…where they could get an early start this morning…

I couldn’t help but, call and check on them… and they were already on the road

It had rained every day they were here… Dampening (literally) a few plans… but, we just opted to do some other things… k0334307

TODAY… of course… is bright… sunny… with a beautiful blue sky k9095031 … as they head home…

They will be on my mind for a few days… reminiscing about what we talked about… what we did… where we went…

I walked around my yard this morning… them on my mind k11242244 … checking on my flowers… and seeing how things are growing…

Our routine getting back in step pretty quick… and I’m sure theirs will too…

Today I planted  k5807700  some seeds in concrete flower pots that my Mom gave me when we moved in our first home

They are 42 years old

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I paint them white… almost every summerk5432144

They have moved from porch to porch and now reside on my back steps as we go into our back door… and onto our deck

I love to watch seeds mature and grow k3540538 … so every spring a few packets will be sowed somewhere…

Today it’s California Poppy k13567126 and Marigoldk12073994 … I love the Marigolds because of the easiness to grow… and the Pretty Orange Poppy seemed to coordinate with the colors of them…

Now to watch them grow and track their progress…

My “grateful” being for the most wonderful Mom who taught me so much…

She bestowed in me a grateful heartk9562459 … and the love of beautiful flowers

“Helicopters “… “Whirlybirds”… Seeds?

gIFT…

Do you like watching those little helicopter things that come floating down when summer arrives?… I loved them as a kid and I love them still… What a wonderful fun gift of nature… and the Maple Tree”   … Because that’s where they come from… A seedling waiting to become a new Maple Tree… They resemble a dragonfly wing I think…fragile… see through… and made just right to swirl down to the ground… This distinctive “fruit” of this neat tree are called samaras or “maple keys”… These seeds or “whirlybirds”  occur in distinctive pairs each containing one seed enclosed in a “nutlet” attached to that flattened wing I was talking about… also described as fibrous and papery tissue… Their shape helps them spin as they fall and they can be carried a considerable distance on the wind… One Maple Tree can release hundreds of thousands of seeds at a time … Some of these seeds remain dormant in the soil for several years before germinating… and “stratification” is required usually before they can germinate… From what I read… this means a period of warmth and cold… Evidently the little “helicopter” I found in one of my flower boxes… had done just that!… and a small tree was beginning to grow…
