You suddenly find yourself standing alone on an unknown sidewalk in an unknown place. It’s night and snowing and the only other person around is walking away from you….

Enjoy!

So Cold!    by: Marilyn Griffin

My mind seems trapped…

I feel the cold…

Coat tightly wrapped…

Knees begin to fold…

I see him there…

And call out…

Turns with a glare…

I’m in doubt…

The snow falling harder…

I’m losing touch…

Do I see anger…

As I clutch…

Clutching what hope…

Is left in me…

Can I cope…

Eyes plea…

He reaches me…

As I give in…

Then my eyes see…

A slight grin…

He wraps me in a strong embrace…

Holds me tight…

I feel his face…

Lights shine bright…

I open my eyes…

Sun pouring in…

See blue skies…

Dreaming of HIM… once again!

Sometimes quiet…

Sometimes fast…

Sometimes unaware…

“The Best Cold!”

A Memory…

Our really first snow … but, a little disappointed… I wait for it to snow here in Louisville… I know it will be in January around my birthday… Always is…But, today we just got the blowing kind of snow  with no accumulation to speak of… Just very cold and making the roads slippery… The kids did get out about two hours early … That of course makes the parents frantic in getting home or finding someone to pick them up and keep them until they can get off from work… Of course the kids love it…any time out of school is a blessing to them!… When I was young we had what you called SNOWS!”… Enough to build snowmen … enough to get the sled out … enough to have to bundle up with layers and layers of clothes, two sets of gloves, scarves wrapped around our faces and a toboggan for our heads…  Boots were rubber… and anything but, warm… just kept the wet out… So many socks pulled on you couldn’t even feel your feet… We headed for the many hills in our neighborhood… We had two great spots and the neighbors down the road had a sledding hill that surpassed all… at least it seemed huge when I was young… A little scary…with trees to go around… The bravest making the first tracks , which became more slippery with each ride down but, we all were amped up to try anything the other kids were doing… We sometimes built a fire… finding any dry twigs … permissible in those days… a place to warm our hands… We stayed until our faces were red from the cold and wind… until we couldn’t feel our feet … until we weren’t able to wiggle our fingers inside our gloves or mittens … stiff from the wet and cold… until the fire had died down and we were too cold to find anything else dry to put on it… until the sky started turning dusky   and the thoughts of hot chocolate  was sounding better and better… Time to go home… Waving good-bye and hoping tomorrow we could repeat this wonderful day!

“Is It Spring Yet?”

It’s Spring!  …oh, do I love the warmer weather…my Mom said I would feel different about snow , cold weather, the Holidays of winter…why??? …because I sure loved the snow…still do…early in the winter, when it starts to come down…you’d have to be crazy not to love the beauty of all that white fluffy stuff covering the ground …it makes all the earth so clean again…but, then it starts to get driven on, footprints start to appear in the yard, it begins to get dirty…and then as it gets colder and colder …and you have snow, snow and more snow…ice under it…you don’t f eel as “UP” about that pretty white stuff…is this what Mom meant??? Thank goodness we have the joy that snow brings when we are young…what carefree days, what wonderful fun times…Even the cold, cold weather is OK when you’re young…Mom and Dad have made sure of that…we had a nice warm house, warm clothes, and good hot meals…We were bundled up   and we felt sure that all was taken care of…I think this is called “No Responsibilities!”…Holidays were a treat!…the anticipation of all the festivities, gifts under the Christmas tree , people coming over to our house…good food at Thanksgiving…bought by my Dad…he was the shopper…and Mom preparing it…and it tasted so good!…But, still at this point ,”No Responsibilities!””…Just as Winter passed …Spring   came into view…I guess that’s what I compare to my Awakening to Reality…all of a sudden things are made clearer…brighter…I’m growing up…oh no…I’m beginning to take on more “Responsibility!”…I don’t like it! …I like feeling safe, secure, taken care of  …It can’t be time yet…but, it does…and I see what my Mom saw when she saw the snow falling…and what I had to come to grasps with…when Spring arrived!

“MY KIDS!”…

Our kids loved the snow , they loved the warm weather too…why???…because they are kids!…and they are looked after, taught things, taken places, sometimes literally cleaned up , fed, given meds  , kept on  a schedule, given things…just made sure that all was safe and secure for them…some of our students did start to grow up…they reached maturity like all children…they begin to see it takes money to buy things, that they can’t go everywhere they want, that sometimes those new “Air Jordan”  tennis shoes are not in the budget, even though “ALL” the kids have them…some start to think of their future…wanting to go to college, wanting to date  , wanting to drive a car…I can think of some of our students that fit into this picture…And then I can remember the students that will never grow up…literally their little minds will stay little all the rest of their life…I at times I felt so bad and so sad for them…I couldn’t reach them… I just didn’t have the ability to teach something no matter how hard I tried to come up with different ways of getting it across…and they just didn’t have the ability to grasp   the smallest idea or basic skill…It was at times so heart breaking!…and then I saw the joy that little fellow or gal gave back to others…their spirit was awesome!…their delight was awesome!…their stamina was awesome!…their smile was everything!…They were going to have “NO responsibilities ever!…they weren’t going to know what it’s like to make it on your own…they would have a helping hand   all their days…They could love the last Snowfall   like it was their first…and Spring would just mean warm days, playing and laughing…and smiling at all that came around…
