Day #1… Vacation…

It’s taken me a few days to recuperate… Like it says, “I need a vacation to help me get over my vacation!”…
I knew I had walked a lot!…

to the pool…to the shops…to the pier…to the store…to the beach…on the beach…to eat

tybee-10-04-10-041 march-2011-044

and this was all around our hotel05922_b1
I liked it!… so handy…
but, I wore out the flip-flops I brought with me…AdmiralInn_BANNERS_attrac1
Bought me a new pair in Savannah100px-Savannah_official_seal
Needed for sure!…
Our hotel was handy…
Room on first floor – non-smoking- near snack machines/drinks/ice- near front door and right down the hall to the pool… 05922_g1
Everywhere we went the people were so friendly…
but, I know this from going to Georgia for 44 years

240px-USA_Georgia_location_map_svg
My husband is from Maconso I have been many times

My youngest son used to tell my Mom and Dad…”Grandma and Papa… If you visit there… They are going to hug and kiss you!”…

and he was right!

Bobby hadn’t been to Savannah since he was quite young and had no remembrance of it… and never to Tybee Island

So, when I heard about it from a Facebook friend I knew from school…

I wanted to go!
and proceeded to make plans
I’ve learned… if you don’t make plans and start on them… it will never happen!…
130713_006

Leaving around 6:30am… it was quite foggy…

130713_010

Didn’t take long to hit the Tennessee line…

130713_011

After a quick pit stop… in Tennessee… we were on our way to Chattanooga

I was driving… so no photos through there…

Bobby got a Tennessee scratch off ticket and won $100.00… Nice way to start our trip!

130714_019

130714_014

Atlanta traffic is always bad!… but, Bobby gets through with little hang ups…

just slow and easy is the way it’s done!

Our first stop was near Griffin, Ga… to spend the night with one of Bobby’s sisters and her husband…

Dinner ready… and delicious!…

Visiting with two of her sons… a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter…

Just love them!

We are totally at home at their house!

The next day after breakfast we headed to Gray , GA… near Macon, where Bobby grew up…

Staying with another sister/husband tonight…

with their daughter/grandson…

and seeing his 3rd sister/husband… their daughter/her son

After hugs and kisses…

and “sweet tea”…

we went to the cemetary of Bobby’s Mom, Dad, two brothers and a nephew…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Since we have been married… he has lost his Mom, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, three brother-in-laws, 1 sister-in-law, a niece and a baby nephew…

Lots of memories were flowing…

We visited another nephew/wife… a friend of my family that has moved to Macon… and my oldest brother and his daughter were visiting her…

Icing on the cake!…

After returning… Jimmy prepared homemade BBQ… slaw… corn on the cob… baked beans… fresh tomatoes… and cake…

Can’t get better than that!

We would be heading out early… Anxious to get to the beach!

More to come…

My Sunday Gratefuls – July 7, 2013

4th of JULY Plans…

I have company this 4th of July… A cousin and her husband from Tennessee

It’s raining here… so our plans for a cook out might not happen… but, that won’t keep us from doing a few things…

We will be going to Forest Edge Winery for a wine tasting… Never been… So new to us as well as them…

We hope to catch the new Lone Ranger Movie tonight… after dinner out somewhere…

It is a wonderful museum with a panorama video of Derby Day… in full circle of the room…

Quite nostalgic… bringing a little quiver to my heart and pride of living in this wonderful state…

If weather permits… a trip to Huber’s Farm in Indiana… known for an abundance of fresh produce…

a petting zoo… ponds… cheese/wine store… homemade breads/pies/ice/cream… craft items

and a wonderful restaurant serving home-style portions of all of their items grown on the farm…

Now, if we do all of this… that we have planned…we will be in need of a rest day for sure…

talking , laughing and reminiscing of our childhood days…

Daily Prompt: Memories For Sale

On a weekend road trip, far away from home, you stumble upon a garage sale in a neighborhood you’re passing through. Astonished, you find an object among the belongings for sale that you recognize. Tell us about it.

Photographers, share an image that says MEMORY.

We were headed for Georgiak1896130 logo_georgia

… My husband was born there…

We had been many times… but, this time we were not going to rush!… we were going to take our time

braucl0375s

We were going to see all of those places we say we are going to see “some day”…

and stop whenever an interesting place poped up…

Quaint places to eat .k12262401.. trying new things… I was up for shoppping a little…

I love thrift storesyard sales k0838422 … peddler’s malls… Any place there are older items just waiting for me to use somewhere… discover… use in a different waysandon0329s

We were almost to Atlantaafter stopping at some great places in Tennessee

u15416597

Chattanooga had Ruby FallsLookout Mountainrockcitysm … We spent the night and took a tour on a RiverboatThe Southern Bellelogo

All was wonderful!

We decided the next few miles before we reached our destination would be devoted to “me” time… out-of-the-way sales of any kind… antiques… yard sales… garage salesk7572522 … It was the weekend… and all cities and little towns have these it seems… and the weather was perfect k10032129

We had stopped at a few when I made Bobby take a U-turn for a garage sale that was calling my name

k11515326

I soon found out why

Not only did it have lots of “good stuff”… things were cheap! k0415887

I love rummaging and was going through a box of books… magazines… paint suppliesk7781868

when “there it was!”…

I hadn’t seen one since I was 11 years old… It had been a Christmas present from Santak4751773

The BEST present I ever received!… I BELIEVED that Christmas Day even if I had been having doubts about Santa’s existence

It was just a brown… black…white photo on the front … but, I recognized it immediately…

21P56EPY27L 41sABVPTVTL

This set of wonderful drawing supplies with the author/instructor’s face looking from the cover was the most inspiring gift I had as a young childI loved to draw… I loved to paint… and I followed the instructions of this artist to the “T”….

The set I uncovered was complete

1473

How could that be!…

I used mine until all of the paper… the kneaded eraser 220px-Kneaded_eraser … drawing pencils… sketching chalks… shading stump 31FHuoO61FL__AA160_… sand pad sharpener… was used completely up…

Only the instruction booklet was left and kept by me for many years until it finally was misplaced… thrown out???

I didn’t care about the price… This found treasure k10120431was to be mine… Made in 1960… the year I had received this wonderful gift from Santa…

I was grinning from ear to ear… almost hugging it to me… Actually… I think I did!…

The lady selling the items… was grinning back at me… “You kind of like that?”, she asked… “It’s been in that box for a long time”, she added…

“Yes, I can tell”, I said… looking at it like it was made of gold!” k8382403

She smiled a big smile!… “I like to draw and paint”k5461393 , she said…

“I assume you do too”…k5616302

“Oh, yes!”… as I looked up from my kneeling position from looking in the box…k11956256

“What do you want for this”, I asked…

She hesitates a moment… like she’s thinking of a price…

“Why don’t you just take it”“From one artist to another”, she adds… kle0044

I clutched the gift tighter thanking her over and over…k10651982k10651982 and thinking to myself, “Santa didn’t even have to bring it in his bag of toys” jed0013

I didn’t need to stop at anymore places… I had found my ultimate treasure… I browsed the booklet… memories rushing back as a little girl followed the instructions… like Jon Gnagy was right in front of me…

I fingered the pencils… the eraser was a little dry… and the paper a little yellow…

But, I was happyk9460523 I couldn’t love it any more than if it had been brand new

Daily Prompt: Seven Days / The Daily Post

You wake up tomorrow morning to find all your plans have been cancelled for the next seven days and $10,000 on your dresser. Tell us about your week.

“Oh, my… where did this money come from?” k9179637

Bobby, “Did you win it from a scratch ticket?” k1701177

I know you scratch them sometimes when you go to the store on the corner…

“Did you and Doug win it at Horseshoe Casino?” … You went the other day to play penny slots k11303832

“No, I didn’t win it!… I don’t have that much luck!” k10526498

It came from someone anonymously?… Whoever would do that?…

“You mean it is ours to spend anyway we want?”…

We need to think about this… I’m so conservativepay a bill???… pay something off???… Stock up on things we could use???…

“Have some fun!”k9916211 , you say…

“That sounds so good!”…

“Where could we go???”…

“Who would you like to see???”…

Let’s give this some thought!…

I better hurry… or I’ll have used one of those 7 days just thinking… contemplating… k11242244 going over and over what to do with it!…

Let’s fill the car up with gaspack a suitcase…  x15278694 and just get out-of-town

North or South???

I have to admit… South sounds much warmer and I could use some sunshinek0682379

Let’s drop by and see your family, Bobby… We haven’t been to Georgia for a while and it will do you good to see them…

k7734495k10578451

Let’s go by the casino in Tennessee… We might lose a few dollars or we may win some more… Sometimes a chance has to be taken… and you have so much fun pbu0761

3 days gone by already…goes too fast!…

After visiting a day… let’s hit the road again k8255274 … stopping at anything we want to see… trying new places to eat… checking out those things we promise ourselves to do when we are in such a hurry …

I’ll be happy and content to see that Ocean and feel the water lapping at my toes

k1229575

Feeling the sun k4919127 warming my shoulders… Just smelling the salt in the air…

Our hotel will have a huge King size bed with a big window and patio right on the beach…

We can walk to anything… or just sit and rest… not believing our good fortune… and giving thanks to whoever made this happen…

u11613255

Realistically, I know $10,000 is not an extraordinary amount of money… but, with my compulsion for getting the most from what I have… We will have the best time… and great memories of our special 7 days!…

u14486672k10732690

We make it home safely…. and with my sparing ways… a bill will be paid offk9791884… there will be some stashed   k12289450  for some extra little fun things for us to do… and I will have no regrets in accepting the money… Because I feel I used it wisely… Thanks to our benefactor… He/she has made us so happy for a week… Isn’t that grand!

As you can tell… my desires are smalland my favorite companion is my Bobby…

k5915359

This is exactly what I would picture as a great time… and what I would do with this wonderful gift!

Bertha Got Us There!

I have two girl cousins that are my age…

In fact one was born on the same day as me in the same hospital…

k10507809k10507809

That has probably attributed to the bond we have…

The other one is like a good friend… We can talk and share everything… and we do every week-long distance as she drives to and from work k11313815 …

The cousin who shares my birthday 038a9226lives in Illinois 75px-Illinois_in_United_States_svg

The other in Tennessee Tennessee_in_United_States_svg

I’m in the middle in Kentucky 75px-Kentucky_population_map

And that so describes our relationship…

Phyllis and I played together…

Vera and I played together…

Every now and then… we were all three together…

k2148534

Sometimes that “three” just wasn’t a good idea…

We all have such different personalities…

One… unable to make decisions without going over it and over it…

One… has a quick wit and is “fast-moving” in her answers and getting things done…

and then there’s me…

I am the “middle ” ground… because I don’t like confrontation… and I look at both sides …. and hope for middle ground…

I’ve seen both cousins… and the other two hadn’t really visited for so many years…

So Vera came from Tennessee to my house in Kentucky and then we went together to see Phyllis in Illinois…

We all three couldn’t wait to get together…

and Vera kidded, “Can we get along?… Have we matured enough to enjoy the differences in our personalities and what we have become”…

We left early Friday morning… stopping for breakfast  x23081548 and browsing an antiques store for an hour or so…

saf0021

We arrived through “Bertha” telling us each way to go…”Bertha” being Vera’s GPS  on her phone… We praised Bertha … She got us there right to Phyllis’ door perfectly…

k11632129

We were immediately hugged and kissed by her and her husband…

We immediately were at home in Phyllis’ house…

We looked at old pictures she had retrieved from her stash left by her Mom, Aunts… etc. …

k6010465

We were treated to a wonderful dinner of roast beef, potatoes/carrots, gravy, corn and cornbread…

Dessert was a Buttery Chess Cake which I will include here:

Chess Cake Bars

Mix Together:

1-box yellow cake mix

1-egg

1-stick melted butter

Press into 13″ X 9″ greased and floured pan

NEXT:

2-beaten eggs

1-teaspoon vanilla

1-box powdered sugar

1-8oz. cream cheese (soft)

Mix and pour over cake mixture

Bake 350 degrees approximately 30-35 minutes

We loved her country home which part is from the 1800’s… They have a small farm of 29 acres…

u19842403

Lee raises sheep… ( used to raise goats)… and had just had some babies mhg0015 …

They have two beautiful ponds of water… and a creek that runs in the back…

After snows and thaws it was pretty muddy…

I did finally make my way back to the sheep and the two dogs that were herding them… One a Border Collie (Blaze)  border_collie_42_1

and one a Anatolian Pyrenees (Buddy)…  polish_tatra_sheepdog_181_0_thumb

Both took their jobs seriously…

We talked and talked… getting to bed very late…

We woke to coffee brewingx11818573 … and after sitting and talking some more…We had lots to say…

Phyllis fixes us sausage gravy, biscuits, chunky applesauce/apricot/strawberry jam…

Were we happy???… YES! k10021200

Later warm orange cinnamon rolls as we relived some more memories…

u15037178

We were going to meet up with another cousin but, with an ailing husband… we decided another time would be best…

Both of her daughter’s work and so unable to see either of them… A little disappointed, but that’s the way with busy lives…

We kidded Phyllis about all of her wonderful collectibles… Three curios with beautiful dishes, gifts from friends and family… and her love of the Kentucky Cardinal Bird (Red Birds) k11796624as she calls them… A whole cabinet was devoted to them…

We kiddingly said, “We should have just come to your house to browse instead of the antique shop we had stopped at”…

So she said, “Feel free to shop”… “for most anything”, she added…

We left with a gift for my sister… a cute mug k9695791

and glass dish for Vera… and a clear glass bowl k5154825 that was her Mother’s for me… What fun!…

Our conversations… jokes… tears… laughter… will be remembered for a long time…

k11355388

A short visit… but, a fulfilled one…

  • Cousins (awindowintomyworld.wordpress.com)

Moon Pie and RC Cola

Went out with my two good friends who I worked with at school for lunch…

We ate at Cheddar’s75px-Cheddars … I love their grilled shrimp/ rice/ broccoli with bourbon sauce 00910746 …and since they insist you get another sde…I ordered slaw

All was delicious!… I ate everuy bite!

Cheryl loves fish… but, especially crab legs… She can put them away!…

The catfish sandwich special caught her eye… with fries… extra crispy k5980829 …

Linda decided on tortilla soup… and Edamame ( fresh green soybeans) k9661790appetizer… you dipped them in a sauce and seasoning…

No dessert… We were too full!…

We talked and talked… They with two young granddaughters… 8 months and 14 months old… and me with older grandkids… My youngest being 8 years old and a boy… and then an almost 11-year-old old granddaughter and an 18-year-old granddaughter…

We hadn’t been together for awhile so there was lots to talk about!

After eating we all went our separate ways

I ended up at Wal-Mart 75px-Walmart_exteriorcropped … Shopping for my Grandson‘s birthday which was Feb. 13th… but, having a roller skating party next week…

I picked up a few snacks… while I was there… Some Valentine Soft Cookies were on sale… and I have fallen for Vanilla Moon Pies

183728_10151003944471566_482354231_a

All they had was the double decker“Break my heart!”… so I picked them up along with  some drinks  2921349398_59d19ca093_s …

I got home and found my son and Grandson visiting…

I had to sneak the packages in… where Carson wouldn’t see his birthday gifts…

Of course the snacks were attacked… well, the Valentine Cookies… and then that called for a drink… I’m glad I picked them up…

After they left I went to sit down… and decided to have my special snack of a Moon Pie

moon-pie-half and an RC Cola Rccolauslogo …

Haven’t you heard that is how they were eaten when they first come out… It was in Chattanooga Tennessee 1917 when the first Moon Pie was made… and RC Cola came out in 1934… The combination happened in 1950’s and sold as a special for 10 cents

It was probably by accident… that this combo lunch was such a hit…

Actually I drank mine with a diet cola drink… but, the taste is the same…

As I opened up the box of Vanilla Moon Pies… my favorite…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

although they come in chocolate, banana and sometimes coconut… Even chocolate /peanut butter…

I picked out a package and it felt a little funny… maybe heavier…

And what to my surprise!… I had a package with a double-decker pie and a half Moon Pie cut right in the middle..

.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I looked and then looked again…

and then it registered …

The machine who cuts off the packages must have gotten two packages somehow… and cut one in half as it was being wrapped… It was sealed tight and fresh as it could be…

I had to laugh!…

I wasn’t disappointed by no means…

I now had one and one-half of my favorite snacks and no!…  I didn’t share!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now, I’m wondering if any more in the box are this way???

If so… I’ll let you know!

Voices In The Morning…

I was awakened by the telephone ringing 075d3923 I glanced at the clock as I answered… Wow!… 9:00am already  122271H … we had slept in longer this morning… I believe we are a little tired from all of the hustle-bustle… but, we don’t realize it until our bodies tell us…

My first thought was that it was my cousin calling from Tennessee k11451534 … on her way to work… Then… my thought went immediately to my sister who has had a bad case of Vertigo k10941916… and so sick!…

But, to my surprise… it was my youngest son… the one with the 3 children… He asked how we were… and then commented on us still being asleep… I say, “It does seem we sleep a little longer now that we are both retired”… probably because we stay up later if we want… Actually… we are just whooped from the Holidays!

I hear kids voices happy… laughing… and a little loud k10364090k4603845for my ears so early… but, a good sound!…

I comment that they are up early and playing… and Brian says, “Carson had his friend spend the night… and that they are playing X-Box 05891078000… That answered any question immediately!… BOYS!…

He says, “They are actually being really good… just a little loud“…

Now, you have to know that my son/wife and 3 kids are living with his in-laws until they buy a new home  jba0061 or start building… They have sold theirs and are in the process of finding “that certain home” that they will be living in for the rest of their lives… Have looked at so many… I’ve lost track… and have not gotten several due to their bid not being the right price k7765577… They have been with her parents for about a month… and even though cramped… doing OK!… I loved hearing all of the tales from each one as they visited Christmas Eve…

He then says…”We got that house we wanted! The one we looked at over a month ago!”… and I say, “The one with the woods in the back?” k4398175 … and he says… “YES!”

“How?”… I ask… and he said, “We  just decided to take a chance and talk to the builder  sps0679 and his wife again”… and they accepted our offer”…

He was elated!… and I know Melanie was too…

So… in a month they will be moving… and will get to begin the new year in their new home…

His in-laws will have their home back to themselves  k9599158 … and I bet it will feel quite a bit larger after the 5 of them

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

+ Wickett, their dog

547806_123287241149363_626350221_n

… are gone…They will always have lots of little memories of the time they shared their home… maybe even a little sadness k11420335 might creep in… when they don’t hear those happy little voices  k0316635 so early in the morning…

“Bell Buckle Craft Fair”… Already Planning for Next Year!

Gift…

We arrived back at Vera’s and Jack’s… pretty tired… We chilled… Only had a little snack since we had such a wonderful lunch at the “Loveless Cafe’ “

Knowing Vera and I had a big day coming…we opted for bed pretty soon after watching a show on TV… and talking  as we always do when we get together…

Vera’s friend, JoAnn arrived right on time… early the next morning… a lady just like us…wanting to get out and see what we can find at the “Bell Buckle Craft Fair”!

I was really excited! … because I had never been… but, as I said in an earlier blog… it sounded a lot like the one we go to in Glendale, KY

It was not a long ride… JoAnn and I had never met… only knew each other from what Vera had said… Her description seemed pretty accurate… and I believe JoAnn thought the same thing about me

We found a parking place at the city park  “no charge” if you parked there!… and it was just a couple of blocks to all of the festivities…We all had worn our “walking shoes”

We came to the center of town… A small place with a train track running right through the middle … Vendors were everywhere!… already selling their wares

Knives, homemade dish towels and crocheted items , toys, jewelery… lots of jewelery!… from necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, hair accessories to scarf holders

Brightly colored scarves… to match any outfit… A popular item!… Hats , blouses, sweaters, kids clothes, doll clothes…

Sunglasses, jellies/jams , sauces, purses…

Wreaths for Fall, wreaths for Christmas , handmade wood items, handmade quilts

Picture frames, wonderful smelling soaps, sun catchers, leather items such as beautiful bound diaries , belts  fitted to your waist, hammered and embossed with your initials or your name…

I wondered why I saw so many people were wearing “orange?”…but, then I remembered it wasn’t just a Fall color…It was “Tennessee Volunteers”   country…

We hopped on the wagon pulled by a big tractor… bales of hay to sit on… even roll around stairs for the elderly to climb up on since the wagon was so high… Everyone talking to each other and pointing out the different sites… It seemed everyone was out to have a lovely day and the weather was cooperating just right!

We rode over to Maple Street

More vendors lined the streets and it seemed there was no end in sight…

We had our eyes looking for the “Roasted Corn on the Cob… We found it!… but, I think it was our noses that found it first… dipped in melted butter , the husk used for the handle… sweet and tender… a little salt/pepper… Oh, my~ was it good!…

We passed the cloggers… girls dressed in full skirts… keeping up with the music and tapping their shoes to the “fiddle” beat!…

People sat on more hay bales to eat and enjoy the show…

We made our way around lots more booths…

The smell of Kettle Corn wafted through the air… and we found the booth we wanted!… They had Regular , Caramel, Candy Apple, and “Variety” which had a mixture of about 6 different fruit flavors… and we all chose different flavors… That way we could taste each others…

By this time… Vera had bought a necklace with a cross… very pretty… a purse for a little girl she knew… also cute, with a big flower on the front…

JoAnn had purchased some steak knives… for her husband… Scarves for herself… 4 to be exact… and I had bought some pretty fragrant soaps… I love that they are homemade and make such nice gifts for Christmas… a Butterfly Hair Clip for another niece… dainty and pretty…

The scents were “energy”, “blackberry”, “orange grove” and “white magnolia”…

Vera and I both bought a book called “Secrets From Behind the Chair”… and the author was there to sign it… She was the sweetest!… It will be a gift for my niece who is a hair dresser and Vera also has a favorite hair dresser that she has had for about 20 years…

Both Vera and JoAnn watched ( were mesmerized ) by a vendor who sliced, grated, chopped, stirred and peeled  with a Food Processor  for about 20 minutes… I never saw so much wasted food… cabbage grated to about a 1-1/2′ tall mound… tomatoes chopped in a bowl that held about 3 gallons… corn on the cob grated off the husk into a pile a 1-foot deep X 1-foot wide… Used for demonstration purposes… and it must work… because…

as they caught up with me at a couple of booths down the row… They displayed their purchases… saying, “We got a great deal!”… I kinda giggled… because I think I’ve heard that before… and then in about 6 months it will be sitting in a closet somewhere… but, as long as they like it and use it at least one time… it will be a great memory!

We made our way back to the pick-up point of the wagon to ride back to the center of town… We were going to eat at the “Bell Buckle Cafe’ “…

We put our name in and it was going to be about a two-hour wait… We stuck it out… taking turns… viewing the shops along the strip…

We spotted these cute poodle puppies sitting on their master’s motorcycle… They never tried to jump down and seemed to pose for pictures snapped by the onlookers…

I spotted some lamps made from kitchen  appliances and tools… People will never cease to amaze me with their talents and ideas…

Our name was called and we made our way back to be seated in this old refurbished building with original brick walls

We had BBQ, Chicken Salad, Veggies, cornbread

Of all my experiences so far… this was probably my only disappointment… but, then comparing it to my meal the day before at the Loveless Cafe… which was awesome food!… it probably didn’t have a chance!… It just wasn’t as good as I expected…

As we walked back to the car I was thinking of the things I wished I had done… Like drinking a glass of iced cold Fresh Squeezed Lemonade

and I was glad I got a photo of those pretty bird houses…

and plans were going around in my head for next year’s trip to the Bell Buckle Craft Fair!
