My Sunday Gratefuls: July14, 21, 28 – 2013

My grateful for the 14th of July has to be for being able to take a vacationk14025282

To get out and enjoy different scenery… see relatives… and view places I’ve never seen before…

I see every detail to it’s fullest… and enjoy the beauty… the history… the different foodk4736129 … and the wonderful people…

The 21st of July is my grateful for a safe trip homek14550074

No problems… and the great memories I’ll have for years to come…

I look at the photos I took and I seem to be back in that very place for an instant… how neat is that!… x16213619

Today… the 28th of July has to be the overnight trip with my sister

Her… being a caretender for her very sick husbandnri0124 … needed some time to relax… talk …and reflect…

We got in the pool… sat outside in the sunshineread a little u12139351  (more talk, than read)… had a good dinner… and then played some penny slots at the casino

Your mind just relaxes… with all of the noise… music… people… drowning out your thoughts for a short while…k10089302

We had a nice roomtalking some more k8266615laughing/crying…

With the TV droning on… the sleepies hit us hard sfo0174We slept like babies

We even enjoyed the ride home

Having to tip the valet with a “bag of change” u17710655laughing as we did…

(This picture I found actually looks like the baggie of change we had!)

We were broke!

We would have loved to be able to drive home in this!

Our Day In Savannah…

Never had been to Savannah But. I have fallen in love with this lovely Southern City!

So beautiful with the moss hanging from the trees…

130718_013130718_012

We parked under these lovely moss laden trees…

There are 22 park-like squares throughout the city…

Designed by Gen. James Oglethorpe170px-JamesOlethrope

Savannah was the first planned city… and this plan is today called “The Oglethorpe Plan“…

and the homes… some huge… but with a classical beauty

The pastel colors… the laid back atmosphere… the water… the shops… the river traffic…

130718_009

We watched as this tugboat moved down the Savannah River…

The history… so fascinating…

I will go there again… A one time trip is not enough!…

It was only 20 minutes to Savannah from where we were at Tybee Island

Loved that!

We viewed the city as we drove through…

I take in all details… the colors, the people, the buildings, the decor…

130717_016130717_018

I knew we wanted to see the Riverfront

and we found it easily with the directions I had gotten off of a map from the Motel…

We parked… and found the rustic stone/brick steps going down to a lower street level….

130718_005

As you can see the steps are steep and original…

Immediately… the Savannah River is before you…

130718_003

One of my favorite photos I took…

We decided to go up one way since we seemed to have come down pretty much in the middle

We visited several shops… staffed with the friendliest people…

130717_009

130718_011

This shop had every type of peanut you could imagine and open cans of each for tasting anything you wanted to try!

I tasted several!

We checked out a Store dedicated to all kinds of Honey… Tasting several as the nice young lady explained where they came from…

130717_005

Yummy!

We checked out a funky hat store… and It’s there I bought a pair of new sandalsNO, not a hat… I was in for some walking … and my old ones were on their last leg…

130717_013

I talked to this Artist ( Simba ) who painted on discarded items… Very friendly… origianally from Jamaica and going to school in Savannah…

There were numerous artists along the waterfront and even a lady singing… but, too far away to get a good picture…

We walked and looked in several shops and then decided to quench our thirst at an outside table area of the Dockside Restaurant…

They had Mimosa on special… and so I chose that…

Quite refreshing… Champagne and orange Juice…

130717_006

Bobby checking out the view as we had a refreshing drink…

We walked and viewed the bridge that crosses the River… and the ships that were docked…

130717_008

We watched the people and saw two River Paddle Boats…

similar to our Belle of Louisville here in Louisville

( The Belle )

We viewed a memorial for World War II Veterans shaped like a globe… very pretty!…

130717_010130717_011

We sat at benches along the River… and viewed the Open Air Market… full of all kinds of items for sale…

I asked the clerk at one of the shops I liked , “Where is “The Waving Girl” statue …I wanted to see this in particular after reading about it… and he said, “You are almost there… just pass the Open Market and where the greenery starts”…

We found her and I just loved it!… It represents Florence Martus (1869-1943) who supposedly greeted the sailors and fisherman returning home … By day she waved a handkerchief and by night a lantern… for 44 years…The staue was created by Felix de Weldon

130718_008

Another statue that was made popular by the book and movieMidnight in the Garden of Good and Evil“…  called “The Bird Girl“… is replicated in smaller statues in lots of the shops we visited… Very pretty also!… I found out later it was moved from the “Bonaveture Cemetery” to the “Telfair Museum of Art”… Maybe next trip… I’ll get to see it in person…yhst-10599332836763_2273_58564033

A Statue depicting a remembrance of the suffering of Slavery was beautiful…

The words of Maya Anjelou were engraved on the base…

130717_014130717_015

We walked and looked until we finally had to give it up

Hopefully we will be able to make another trip to this beautiful city of Savannah!

Daily Prompt: Memories For Sale

On a weekend road trip, far away from home, you stumble upon a garage sale in a neighborhood you’re passing through. Astonished, you find an object among the belongings for sale that you recognize. Tell us about it.

Photographers, share an image that says MEMORY.

We were headed for Georgiak1896130 logo_georgia

… My husband was born there…

We had been many times… but, this time we were not going to rush!… we were going to take our time

braucl0375s

We were going to see all of those places we say we are going to see “some day”…

and stop whenever an interesting place poped up…

Quaint places to eat .k12262401.. trying new things… I was up for shoppping a little…

I love thrift storesyard sales k0838422 … peddler’s malls… Any place there are older items just waiting for me to use somewhere… discover… use in a different waysandon0329s

We were almost to Atlantaafter stopping at some great places in Tennessee

u15416597

Chattanooga had Ruby FallsLookout Mountainrockcitysm … We spent the night and took a tour on a RiverboatThe Southern Bellelogo

All was wonderful!

We decided the next few miles before we reached our destination would be devoted to “me” time… out-of-the-way sales of any kind… antiques… yard sales… garage salesk7572522 … It was the weekend… and all cities and little towns have these it seems… and the weather was perfect k10032129

We had stopped at a few when I made Bobby take a U-turn for a garage sale that was calling my name

k11515326

I soon found out why

Not only did it have lots of “good stuff”… things were cheap! k0415887

I love rummaging and was going through a box of books… magazines… paint suppliesk7781868

when “there it was!”…

I hadn’t seen one since I was 11 years old… It had been a Christmas present from Santak4751773

The BEST present I ever received!… I BELIEVED that Christmas Day even if I had been having doubts about Santa’s existence

It was just a brown… black…white photo on the front … but, I recognized it immediately…

This set of wonderful drawing supplies with the author/instructor’s face looking from the cover was the most inspiring gift I had as a young childI loved to draw… I loved to paint… and I followed the instructions of this artist to the “T”….

The set I uncovered was complete

1473

How could that be!…

I used mine until all of the paper… the kneaded eraser 220px-Kneaded_eraser … drawing pencils… sketching chalks… shading stump 31FHuoO61FL__AA160_… sand pad sharpener… was used completely up…

Only the instruction booklet was left and kept by me for many years until it finally was misplaced… thrown out???

I didn’t care about the price… This found treasure k10120431was to be mine… Made in 1960… the year I had received this wonderful gift from Santa…

I was grinning from ear to ear… almost hugging it to me… Actually… I think I did!…

The lady selling the items… was grinning back at me… “You kind of like that?”, she asked… “It’s been in that box for a long time”, she added…

“Yes, I can tell”, I said… looking at it like it was made of gold!” k8382403

She smiled a big smile!… “I like to draw and paint”k5461393 , she said…

“I assume you do too”…k5616302

“Oh, yes!”… as I looked up from my kneeling position from looking in the box…k11956256

“What do you want for this”, I asked…

She hesitates a moment… like she’s thinking of a price…

“Why don’t you just take it”“From one artist to another”, she adds… kle0044

I clutched the gift tighter thanking her over and over…k10651982k10651982 and thinking to myself, “Santa didn’t even have to bring it in his bag of toys” jed0013

I didn’t need to stop at anymore places… I had found my ultimate treasure… I browsed the booklet… memories rushing back as a little girl followed the instructions… like Jon Gnagy was right in front of me…

I fingered the pencils… the eraser was a little dry… and the paper a little yellow…

But, I was happyk9460523 I couldn’t love it any more than if it had been brand new

“Restricted or Constricted!”…

It was asked how I prefer traveling …usually by car …Why? …Because you can stop and look when you want…rest when you want …eat when you want …check out something interesting along the way when you want …take your time …In other words “What I want”…is in that answer…I’m not restricted or constricted!… to someone elses schedule…someone elses agenda …someone elses eating habits…someone elses time…We are leaving for vacation Saturday…by car! … My husband has completely overhauled it… it seems…Not really…although, the brakes, oil, filters, tires have all been checked and worked on…”Thank Goodness” for my mechanically inclined husband…and has been detailed in and out …I leave this to him…I’m the “make everything else come together”  part of our team…I make sure we have our clothes, grooming supplies  , health needs , shoes, swimming apparel , food, drinks, etc. …reservations   were made 6 months ago …maps and directions are printed …oh, yeah…money retrieved from the bank …The more I write…makes me feel like I’m more ready than I actually am…I think we all can get more done …as we get down to the wire …last-minute things that pop up …something you think you just have to take…I’ll begin my list  today…checking everything off… from toothpaste to the bag of surprises I put together for my Grandkids…When we get there…our kids and their friends will have their own spot…and my Bobby and I will have our own spot…As the kids take an all day boat trip out on the bay/ocean …we will use our car to explore the city…I like our mode of transportation …whether 10 miles or 600We can do anything we want!

“My Kids!”…

When you are youngtransportation can be very important…of course being Middle School age …our kids depended on their parents, older brothers/sisters, grandmas/grandpas…maybe even aunts/uncles…We had a young man in our class with a great knack of getting to about anywhere he wanted to go…He had grandiose ideas…He envisioned himself in places he had never been before…doing anything he wanted…He was a wiz at the computer…and as you know …the world is at your fingertips…just put in an idea, a name, a place and there it is…pictures/photos, descriptions beyond belief and even reviews from fellow explorers …”Ben” was what you might call “too smart for his own good” …If there was a way…with his will and determination…he figured it out … This could be from obtaining his parents’ credit card and using the number on it to purchase many an item on  and other stores…until they realized what he was doing…If he decided to go across town to a certain store , movie or other place he had heard about… TARC ( Transportation Authority of River City) Public bus …could take him there in a couple of hours …The only thing…no one knew where he was…how he got there…until someone noticed or brought him home…He had ordered a bus pass…”He was considered handicapped you know”…The most memorable event was when he was heading for Las Vegas …He figured if he got there… he would be set when he arrived…The commercials and advertisements said so, “You can eat all you want!” …”Play all you want!” , “Have a Free Room at any Casino” … “Stay up all day and night”… He was going to have fun! …Just a little initiative and he would be arriving in the “City of Lights”   quick as a wink…no more than a day or two… Just had to find the right transportation! …And since he was only13 years old…and had no driver’s licensea bus, a plane, a train  might be the answer…I believe he made it as far as the bus station…downtown…in the middle of the night…knowing no one…and only his wonderful ideas  of visiting a city he had read about on the computer …Thank goodness…he was discovered…He had chosen his transportation thinking he could travel and  do anything he wanted…but, soon learned that’s only a small part of the picture …restrictions and constrictions  play a part when you are only a middle school student…
