VA Hospital’s “Other” Favorite Saying!… “Just go to Emergency Room!”…

Been a couple of rough weeks …

Bobby doing OK with new chemo drug added to other two he was already on…

Breaking out of the skin … main culprit…

but, even that … He accepted and kept going…

Trying as hard as he could to adjust…

He ALWAYS pulls it up and looks for what his capabilities are… with the extra side effects…

BUT…

He started what seemed to be sinus… allergies… with eyes…

Gave him allergy meds that were prescribed…

Used Netty Pot to clear nose and drainage… etc. …

BUT…

got worse…

Eyes running …

Nose running…

and gooey stuff appearing around eyes…

Some blood even appearing…

RED… Very Blood Shot eyes…

went to Eye Doctor at VA hospital who had done his cataract and eye lift procedures…

and they were very nice at fitting him in on a busy day…

“We just showed up!”…

Found this works sometimes…

The eye Doctor was puzzled…

He saw no infection…

and… conferred with another Doctor…

which immediately said…, “The chemo was causing this…”… Had seen several times…

Collects around eyes … causing swelling… running…etc. …

also clogs ducts…

Drops were given and redness has disappeared…

but, still crusting… running… and looks awful!…

and now nose doing same…

around mouth some…

and “private part” being effected also…

NOT GOOD!…

although not a lot of pain…

just very miserable…

When we went for treatment a week ago Wednesday…

we were surprised with a visit from the pharmacy who mixes his chemo…

and they reported that his chemo drug with some others…

had been mixed with an alcohol based water which was a NO NO!…

and had been given to him several times…

I immediately related the problems that had arisen in the past couple of weeks…

and they took notes and were going to check on this…

Also his Chemo Drugs were not coming from Cincinnati, Ohio… but, Indianapolis, Indiana now…

That put ??? in my head also…

As of today…

still suffering …

Talked to Nurse in  Hospice Department at VA Hospital last night… trying to connect with someone…

she said, “Sounds like body is trying to exit something

… by the secretions… and keep an eye on urination… due to kidneys being affected…

Emergency Room advised…

Made phone call to Oncology Department and even rode over to VA Hospital … but, to no avail…

Need to discuss with other doctors and will get back with us…

Advising him to go to Emergency Room if continues … but, could see him Friday…

Last time to Emergency Room… after 4 visits and also talking to clinic…

“He was diagnosed with Cancer”… and had a small heart attack…

a little late!…

If he hadn’t started urinating… which had ceased somewhat… We would be up the creek…

Another disappointing treatment from the VA Hospital again…

Felt we were not dealt with in a way we should have…

“BUSY” or not…

but, then my Bobby’s life is at stake… NOT there’s!…

to be continued…

Bobby’s Progress… and Treats Given…

Bobby had his scan on Monday…

We always get the results on Wednesday when he goes in for Chemo Treatment… (every other Wednesday)

(scan is done after every 4th treatment)

An agonizing time for both of us…

I decided to take the Oncology Department some goodies for “Easter”…

our next appointment being after Easter Weekend…

I made fudge…

adding a few flower sprinkles for color and make the pieces more festive…

I had a kit… which has everything in it to make about 1-1/2 pounds of fudge…

PLENTY!…

I cut the pieces in small squares and put in small muffin papers before putting on my clear “Bunny” plate…

and tied up with Easter Cellophane Bag and bow…

They deserve to be treated kindly… for all they do to make my Bobby feel good when he comes in for his treatments…

kind words…

a pat on the back…

joking…

encouraging…

A “special” job…

“Special people”…

We leave early to go downtown to the VA Hospital…

the day is shining bright… … and ei9t’s early!…

we turn to go up the hill to the hospital …

Visible above the tress…

We valet park… found to be much easier… and no charge/no tipping… are the rules…

We are assigned a room for the day…

he in the bed with his IVs… of 3 or more meds…

and I take my place near him in my chair

Wednesday is Popcorn Day at the VA… and always buy a bag or two  … one to eat as I read my book… watch TV…etc. …

and sometimes one to take home…

His port is accessed…

and Magnesium is started if in need…

and with these drugs… it usually is low…

I go and get him a little breakfast as we wait for blood work to come back…

they have a nice cafeteria at the VA Hospital with kind people… waiting on you…

With the new med that has been added…

Benadryl is taken… Ativan… Steroids, etc. …

and blood pressure has to be monitored…

It seems to raise his  pressure…

but, being somewhat stressed has it’s effects also…

The Doctor comes in… and we actually “hold our breath”…

he is very direct!…

“his Way”…

but, we get honesty… which we do want…

There are 3 spots in his diaphragm they are keeping a close watch on…

“No new growths”…

but, cancer cell # is rising (which is not good)…

he was 230 when discovered cancer…

dropped to 5-6 at end of first year…

then came back…

went to 10-11…

went 15-16…

and now 30-35…

and we nearing another year!…

so… as you see… we are concerned…

Goal was to remove two previous meds… but, he will have to remain on them at this time…

Three total… given through port… and a pump to take home for two days… Taken off around 1:00pm on Fridays…

This is our routine now for about two years…

“We have been given time!”… (Thank you Lord!)

Now…

the Doctor would like to try a new med but, will it will have to be approved

Will take a month for the approval if given… NO guarantees!…

So… we feel like we have heard “the news”… which is terminal cancer

all over again…

Definitely makes you sink…

and the tears flow for both of us

The girls… “nurses”… social worker… nutritionist…

we have several who come in to check changing bags of meds… resetting machine…offering snacks/drinks and sometimes just stay and talk…
That’s what we like best…

so… as you see…

a treat to brighten the day in this department is welcomed…

Neighbors visiting in yard the other evening and one hollers for me to come look!…

I hesitated due to being barefoot (which is normal for me)…

and this is what she had found…

A big!… 8 ” long… Crawdad!… ( some say Crawfish)

One ugly fella…

and also dead!…

I believe my little hunter (Kit Kit) … probably brought it for us to see…

and after checking the back yard near the water… found some BIG Crawdad holes that this little “monster” might have crawled out of…

Colon-leg

No Less a Thoroughbred Artist Dan Colon wants the horses he painted on behalf of his sponsors (Thorntons Inc. and Computershare) to cause viewers to pause and reflect on what they are seeing. He tells the story of how his sister lost part of her leg to diabetes, but that did not mean she was any less of the beautiful woman he knew her to be… she was still wonderful to him. He decided to do a horse in her honor and on behalf of veterans who have also lost limbs.

He designed a large horse featuring a prosthetic leg. When Thorntons Inc. selected the design, Colon hoped he would be able to locate a used prosthesis somewhere, but he was prepared to make one himself, if necessary. He contacted Louisville Prosthetics to see what becomes of old prosthetics and discovered the company loved the concept of his horse. They not only agreed to give him the needed leg, they also came out to measure and fit it to the horse. The resulting project became a labor of love for Dan, his brother Ivan, his son Austin and a friend, Scott Brittingham.

My Bobby goes to VA Hospital where this statue was placed…

I had him stop the car for me to get photos before we left the other day…

It is an awesome feeling to see it and think of all service men who have given so much…
