Who’s Coming?

Gift…

I haven’t been outside today except to get the broom and mop off of the back deck…

I’ve dusted… cleaned carpet… run the vacuum … wiped and swiped…’til things are shining…

I’ve straightened… put things away… folded …’til everything is out of sight…

I’ve washed things… dried things …polished things…”til there’s a sparkle on everything…

I’ve chopped… mixed… stirred … cooked… baked and tasted …”til things seem just right…

I’ve taken a shower… washed my hair… put on a little make-up and dressed… “til I smell as sweet as a flower…

Can you guess what is happening???

Company is coming!… And everything has to be ready!…

To have company is special… and we were taught to give them your best… Whether that be with food … good manners… a clean bed  to sleep in … plans for entertainment if for a few days…

I think you get the picture!…

How do you prepare and greet company at your house?… Similar?… or do you have different traditions?…

Does it matter if it’s just for a few hours?… for a few days?… In town? .. or from another state?

Does it matter WHO the person/persons are?

Write a few words… I’d love to hear from you!

“How to…”

Memory…

Today, my Mom would have been 103 years old …She lived to be 98 …Time has passed swiftly…I think of her and the things she taught me almost every day…How to cook …from baking a cake from scratch to frying chicken in an iron skillet…How to sew on a sewing machine…at that time it was a Singer foot pedal …How to wash clothes…at that time it was on a wringer washer and the clothes were hung on a line in the bright sunshine to dry…How to iron…I practiced on Daddy’s handkerchiefs and pillow cases on a wooden ironing board…How to dust …I’ve been told I was let to watch cartoons on Saturdays as I did this chore…I actually did dust…because I liked rearranging everything on the tables and shelves…How to run the vacuum sweeper …I was told we had the cleanest braided rug in front of the TV as I stood and watched cartoons again…I actually liked running the sweeper as we called it…because I could sing to the top of my lungs, evidently thinking no one could hear me…How to wash dishes…Silverware soaking in the bottom of the dish water…then glasses…plates, cups and bowls next…and pots and pans/skillets last…I will admit…my least favorite chore!…I rarely dried the dishes…I thought air drying  was so much more efficient!…How to cut grass and plant flowers…This is something I loved!…Anything to be outside just like my Mom…Cutting grass and the flowers blooming  made our yard a “showplace” as some would call it…and this was such a great time for my thoughts to wander and my dreams were imagined…In most every part of my being my Mom was an influence…Such a wise teacher of all kinds of traits that I have managed to make my own…I can only hope I have passed on part of her to my children and grandchildren…and someday they will say, Mom or Grandma   taught me “how to”

The”Kirby” Guy!

I come in my front door   from shopping…I’m a little confused??? My coffee table is upside down on my couch…other things around the room are not in their place…Before I could ask my husband what was going on…I notice a strange guy, actually a boy sitting on the loveseat …I then notice a vacuum cleaner   in the middle of the floor…Oh NO! …I have seen this scene before…My husband has let the infamous “Vacuum Salesman”  into our home…to move my furniture, to run HIS vacuum on my carpet …to run his cleaner on my mattress …I see  dirt covered, white paper circles  lying on my floor… I’ve been gone less than an hour and my house had been turned over to the “Kirby”guy …My husband introduces me to this young man…explaining, “He’s just got to show it to us”…”I told him we couldn’t buy it!” …”Boy, did you see what came off of our mattress?” …”Look at all that dirt!”…I really couldn’t believe he had done this…We did this one time  before and it was like pulling teeth  to get the guy out of our house…They are so persistent!…I inform the young man that we are not interested…He proceeds to tell me how light weight  this vacuum is compared to mine…I still insist … letting him know we are not purchasing it!…He says, “OK” …but, he has to show 100 “White Circles” of dirt to his supervisor at the end of his demonstration…So I say, “Since you have to do this…and my husband has let you in…you can run that “&*%&^*$(” vacuum  all over my house then!” …You know I didn’t actually call it that!…but, I did get my house vacuumed pretty good..I proceed to ask this “Young” man a lot of questions…”How old are you?”…”Are you married?”…”Got any kids?”…19 years old, married …with a little girl …only been doing this a month…wore out with it already!  …Travels round trip about 60 miles every day…No days off…works until 10:00pm most nights…”Get the picture!”…I do!…The “Kirby” practices are outrageous …taking advantage of young people who need a job… A  Jim Kirby designed the first one of these vacuums around the late 1800’s and the company has been selling door to door since the 1920’s…The name has only been used since 1930…I had made homemade vegetable soup and grilled cheese  sandwiches …This young boy gladly accepted my husbands invitation  to eat with us…I wanted to say,”That’s not a good practice!”…but, I was not HIS Mother!…Of course I didn’t mind at all…but, after 3 hours  of our visiting “Salesman” I was so glad he was gone…My husband has a heart of gold …and I know if he had the money  he would have bought the   $*%*(*&  vacuum cleaner …Not because WE needed it…but, because the boy needed a sale…I don’t think I’m as “confused” anymore!

“My Kids!”…

I could get confused sometimes when our students tried to tell me something…anything! …Sometimes they had a tendency to talk too fast ... some talked too low , they seemed to whisper all the time… …I could hardly hear them… some talked, but never looked at me …I found that I can hear better if looking at the person face to face  …This was hard for some of our students…Some of our students could really tell some stories …and naive me…fell hook, line and sinker as they say…I wanted to believe our wonderful students…but, I found out they were not exactly telling the truth all the time…They came into the class all excited and would tell me the biggest tale about something they saw or did…”I drove the car last night!” …”I saw John Cenna, that famous wrestler!” …”I went shopping and bought a Play Station II game player  and “all” the games in the store!”… but, the best ones were when they would tell me a teacher had the class for the day… so they couldn’t possibly go to science…or that she wasn’t even at school, so the sub had sent them back to the room… That their homework had REALLY been eaten by the dog! …That they needed 50 cents to buy a much-needed pencil , only to buy an extra drink at lunch…They would say, “I didn’t bring my lunch today”…even though they always did…then I would  find it in the refrigerator  later in the afternoon…They just wanted to get what was being served that day in the cafeteria…especially PIZZA or FRIED CHICKEN days…It just looked too good! … I came to question most everything they said and did …I had been “taken” too many times! …I came to the conclusion that one day they would become great salesmen …They might even become an or Vacuum Cleaner Man and come door to door to demonstrate it in my home…I’m sure my husband would let them come right in! …and maybe even invite them to dinner!
