Day#2 Vacation

We knew the next day would be beach time130716_004

We parked closer due to taking the cooler out with us… Drinks are a must when out on that hot sand

130716_003

We had our beach chairs… and were set…

No sooner than situated… the waves started coming in faster than we anticipated…

130716_036     130716_016

So a move further back from the water was made…

130716_045130716_042

I love the waves hitting my feet as we sit soaking up the rays of the bright sun

Keeps me cool without thinking about how hot it is…

Love it!

We watched the kids playing on their boogie boards… sliding along on the water…Playing paddle ball and frisbee on the beach and in the water…waves lapping at them…

People looking for shells… Not so many where we were… I did find a few the next morning in a puddle where the waves had come up on shore during the night…130716_009

The little ones enjoyed the water puddles more than being in that big body of water…

I can’t blame them!

I watched a group of girls making their way up the beach… They were holding a big net… letting it up and down in the water after a wave came in…

They finally were in front of us…

It was a class from the Science Museum

They were seeing what they could find in their net

The bucket held tiny minnows… and small jellyfish

130716_047        130716_048

They were taking their finds back to discuss their observations

Kinda neat I thought… A fun outing!

As we were just walking in the water making our way out a little further to get wet… I noticed a little boy running from the water holding…”What was it?”… It was a baby shark… about 2 feet long”… 130716_040

Thank goodness it was dead… I was getting pretty nervous

and then it wasn’t too much longer when another young man found one…130716_039

They said, “The guys on the pier fishing… would catch them and then cut them lose… and so that’s why they were in this area”…

No “JAWS” for me please!

I did manage to make a quick rendition of a person’s face with his stomach holding a fish… My sand building… while sitting in the sand playing… My husband gets a kick out of me acting like a kid at 64… I say, “Who cares!… I’m having fun!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The pier was neat…

130716_018130716_024

You walk up to the pavilion which held about 20 picnic tables… and had areas that sold ice cream, hotdogs, drinks, snacks… etc. …

and then continued on to the pier… built on huge pilings… where people opted to fish

There was a sink for rinsing and washing hands… benches… holes in rails for holding poles… and the young men and “older” men were surely enjoying themselves

The view was so pretty!

(more to come!)

I’m Afraid of Water???

I started to tell you about a little lady I met at the YMCA Most_used_YMCA_Logo.png  last week…

She is Korean a little thing… pretty black hairk1086651

Evidently I made an impression on her… because today… a week later… she found me as I was coming in the door…

She talks quite fast with a little accent…

She proceeds to tell me she is going to try some of the equipment in the weight room k4902611 instead of Water Aerobics

I’m not an instructor… but, since our instructor… JoAnn… was busy last week… I kept reassuring her… telling her  how good she was doing… and telling her what we were doing…

JoAnn and I had gotten her a belt to make her feel safer in the water… u12795285

She proceeded down the steps… and immediately said, “I”m going to the wall!”… to hold on to…

OK… nothing wrong with that!… k5726200

She’s so nervousapprehensive… but, smiling the whole time!…

I tell her, “Just stay by the wall if you like… just walk up and down in the water… for the first day… that may be all you can do”…

She says, “Thank you!”… what seemed a hundred times…

Others were just as nice to her… and encouraging… but, evidently for her to find me and tell me her plans today… We had bonded!…

She lets us know that she at 72 years old… has had two knee replacements k2824649 … and had NEVER been in water… pretty much scared to death!… Having a great fear of water!…

Looking it up… it is called “aquaphobia”… and I doubt that she even knows that term…

762008

I think what she did was amazing

She fought that fear

Got in the water…

Even let loose of the wall for some of the activities… Even if it was a short while…

and vowed pix2124she would be back to try it again…

She had left smiling… talking very fast still… and when I saw her this morning…

She made me smile!…

k8945107

She also says she might see us Wednesday to give “Water” another try…

When I hear people say, “I can’t!”… well, it’s something I find hard to accept

Just try… is all I ask…

How do you get over fears… if you don’t address them…

How do you build confidence if you don’t keep doing it…

k4900862

How do you achieve any thing if you don’t try…

I will always remember “Nancy”… for her determination… and having trust

I think she is an awesome lady!

When and Why to Drink Water!

 Gift…

I’ve been trying to drink more water  I know it’s good for me… I’ve heard it all of my life… I don’t dislike it… but, I sure do like my Diet Pepsi  … and Iced Tea in the summer…

I really think water is simply the most refreshing drink… can cool us down … and keep us hydrated better than any other liquid…

I belong to TOPS ( Take Off Pounds Sensibly) a weight watcher group… We have been trying to help each other by giving encouragement…

We try to mail a card  or call at least two people in our group every week… and everyone is loving it…

We are trying to exercise  at least 3 times a week… our choice… something we really like preferably… where we will stay with it…

We are writing down what we eat daily… to remind us of what is going into our bodies… Sometimes we are quite surprised!…

Of course we are trying to lose  a pound or so weekly… We even will take a 1/4 or 1/2 of a pound… Just try to be sensible and consistent

Then there’s the water… we are all trying to drink at least 8 cups of water a day… or at least more than we usually do…

This article was either in a blog … a magazine ... or email  I received… and it was so informative!… Stating when and why we need to drink water

Heart Attack

& Water”

There are correct times to drink water…

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body…

2 glasses of water after waking up – helps activate internal organs…

1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal – helps digestion

1 glass of water before taking a bath – helps lower blood pressure…

1 glass of water before going to bed – avoids stroke or heart attack…

EXTRA Information:

Water at bed time will also help prevent night-time leg cramps

… Your leg muscles are seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse…

The question was asked, “Why people seem to urinate so much at night-time?”...

Answer from a Cardiac Doctor

Gravity holds water in the lower part of the body when you are upright (causing swelling)…

When a person lies down and the lower part of the body (legs and etc.) seeks level with the kidneys… it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier…

Also water flushes toxins  from the body…

Just thought this was so useful…

Thanks to whoever or wherever I received this information!

Cistern Water

Memory…

There’s nothing I like better than getting outside and working up a little sweat… I feel I just piddle though… Doing things like washing off the driveway and sidewalks with the water hose … If you only knew how water was  a concern when I was growing up… you would see my pleasure in this small task… We had to order water from a water company that delivered it in a water truck … My Dad built a cistern to hold water when he bought the 8 acres we lived on… There was nothing on this plot of land… But, he had dreams of a home for my Mom and us… his children… A cistern is a large round hole in the ground… concreted all around to hold the water … Ours was probably about 10′  deep X 6′ wide… Cisterns   are commonly used in areas where water is scarce, either because it is rare or because it has been depleted due to heavy use… in our case… no water lines had been run to this area yet… There was a wood cover that laid on top of it sealing it from outside contaminates… and on this was a concrete block … I realize now that was for our safety… Little ones would have a hard time removing it… I remember my Mom being the one most of the time removing the top to put a stick down into the water to measure the depth  every now and then… She didn’t want it to get too low… because of running out… but, also the electric pump that was connected to it wouldn’t be able to run… The pump that was situated in the basement pumped the water into the house… We always got pretty excited watching the big tanker trunk bringing water down to the cistern… hooking up big hoses  and watching the water fill up the cistern… So as you can imagine… we never used water unnecessarilyNO WASTING!… So one of my goals when I was all grown up was to use as much water as I needed (wanted) to… and I pretty much do… I let the kids play with the hose … I water my plants that I try to grow… I wash off the driveway, deck  and sidewalks… making everything so clean and neat!… I go barefoot most of the time… and letting the cool water run over my feet   to cool me down on a hot summer’s day… Well, it’s the best feeling!… So, yes!… I reached that one goal in my life … Can I mark that off my Bucket List?

Cute…Sweet…Blond…”Lifesaver!”

We were all in the water… trying to keep up with our enthusiastic water aerobic instructor… All of us talking to whoever was nearby… I guess it shows we can do two things at once… Amazing!… We had jogged… cross-country skied… marched like soldiers… did jumping jacks…  Well, you get the picture… One of the ladies I had been talking to earlier had stopped… was standing near the rope that divides us from the lap part of the pool  but, also close to the edge of the pool… She had a knee replacement  weeks earlier… so at times would just have to stop and take it easy… In fact she had just said so… Nothing unusual… She had been seen doing this before… All of a sudden! …there was a commotion to the back of us… coming from her direction… Our little cute, sweet, blond lifeguard we call Chastity… had this lady under the arms… holding onto her with all her might up out of the water from the edge of the pool  … She was hollering for some help in holding onto her… The lady looked passed out… like she had fainted… but, was coming around a little… Chastity was telling someone to push the alarm button   … But, as she was saying this… the lady was begging us not to… She said, “I’m alright… I do this sometimes”… We weren’t so sure… and continued to listen and observe her… Then we saw her with her inhaler … She had an asthma attack   … and thank goodness our little lifeguard was doing her job and alert to the situation!… The lady grew more aware of her surroundings as Chastity kept holding onto her… She said, “I did this before… so Chastity knew the signs as soon as she saw me in trouble”… The lady was helped out of the pool and sat on the bench along the wall for some time… She was fine it seemed… but, so grateful for Chastity’s quick thinking and action… She may be “cute”… she may be “sweet”… she may be “blond” but, there was no dumbness to this little life saver … She was a girl doing a job she had trained for… and had provenshe took it seriously!

“Busy As A Bee!”

Gift…

The best feeling is being busy!… I woke up to a meowing cat … Checked my email and Facebook … Straightened up the house … Had a shower… Went to the YMCA  for my water classes… Came home and fixed lunch… Ran a friend for some errands since she can’t drive anymore … Came home and washed everything down outside with the water hose  after my Bobby had cut grass… I finally rested by playing a game on the computer and watching a little TV … and then went out to finish washing off the areas in the back of the house… I have talked to my sister … and now it is “me” time… A time to rest… slow down and unwind as we do after our water aerobics… All I can say is that it feels so good to really get tired physically… making my mind clearer… and hopefully a peaceful sleep awaits me … Thanks Springtime!… because it’s your wonderful warm weather that makes all of this possible… Don’t you think so?

“The Case of the Attacking Water Hose!”

I was washing off the driveway … The nozzle on the hose came on full blast! … Evidently it was broke but, I figured it would be fine for what I was going to do… My husband had cut grass  and I always get to play with the water hose and wash down everything … Yes, I’m worse than any kid… I love playing in the water! … He always saves that job for me…but, you see… I’m good at it!... I get every bit of dirt, leaves and debris there is… My porch is concrete… so worked fine on that… my sidewalk is concrete… so worked fine on that and my drive way is concrete …so worked fine on that! … As I went to try to turn the nozzle off one more time… (I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try)… It stood it’s ground…and refused to shut off… streaming water out as hard as it could … It seemed to be determined to have it’s way!… I could have held it while I went behind the bushes to cut off the water at the spigot … but, I decided I could throw it away from me onto the ground and then cut it off… The hose seemed to have made up it’s mind to come after me… As I turned to go toward the bushes the hose with this unyielding nozzle  attacked me from the side… shooting it’s forcefulconcrete cleaningspray of water from it’s mouth right into my right eyeball ... I was just stunned!… holding my eye as it watered literally… stinging like a hammer had hit it … I couldn’t see and the pain was terrific!… I cautiously stumbled my way to the backyard to find my rescuer… my husband… He asked, “What’s wrong?”… as I told my story of the “waylaying water hose” with the naughty nozzle”… He went to tame the hose by cutting off it’s water supply  behind the bushes… as I tell him to, “BEWARE!” ... I didn’t want him to succumb to the same fate as me with the wayward water hose and it’s nasty nozzle companion .

“My Kids!”…

The school where I worked was pretty old… At one time it was a High School … this was when I was a teenager … and then I started working there when I was 32 years old… and remained until I retired at age 62… At one time Home Economics was taught in the High Schools… but, by the time I started to work… they evidently felt it was not needed anymore… I still remember the electrical plugs that were in the floor in our classroom that at one time were used for sewing machines … Yes, sewing , cooking and other everyday functions were once taught as classes in High School… The plugs were finally removed after we tripped over them so many times… This was a nice size room…bigger than the usual sized classroom and we liked that… There was also a room accessible from our room that we could use… It had a sink and a refrigerator … This is where our first baking started … and finally became “The Patriot Bake Shop” named after our school mascot … Eventually another large room was given to us with 4 areas that had one time been equipped with all of the utensils, pots/pans, skillets, blenders ,dishes, etc. …anything a normal kitchen would have… Home Ec  was taught there when it was a High School to learn cooking and baking… As years had gone by and Home Ec was not the purpose of this room anymore… the dishes, utensils, pots/pans , etc. had slowly disappeared… the stoves  and refrigerators were removed except for two… the sinks really had not been used… in other words, this room had not been kept up or used in the manner it was meant for… So we found that only two areas worked and not so well…We did our best with what was given us…and were grateful… but, as we started to find out… the stoves had some burners that didn’t work… one of the refrigerators wouldn’t keep anything cold ... the pipes were old and rusty… tiles were missing from the floor… As we began to use the sinks  and run water every day from the worn faucets …this put pressure on some very old and unattended plumbing … The sinks started to react to being used in this unusual manner… They stopped up… they overflowed and then one day after trying to tell us they were just too old and tired to do the job they had been planned for… that they needed some replacement parts… some needed repairs … the handles decided to come lose and the faucet itself exploded with a gush of water that resembled a geyser … We recalled the warnings of the handles being hard to turn off at times … of corrosion around the parts that screwed on… of the pipes pushing water back up into the sink from the drains ... These sinks had tried their best to tell us…but, we had pushed them to their limit … I’m just glad they decided a little soaking  would get the same results as a full-blown gusher … They definitely got our attention!

Cooling Imaginations!

When the water in the swimming pools  is too hot to swim in…well, that’s kinda hot!…That’s what people say who have a pool…especially this week…100+ index most of the week …I was remembering what we did to stay cool… There’s no rhyme nor reason to the  order…but,

1. Made Kool-aid and froze it in ice-cube trays …Delicious!

2. Made enough ice tea , lemonade and Kool-aid to quench the thirst of armies…Usually ran out of ice and resorted to buying some at the ice house!

3. My bathing suit  became my clothing of choice…If not going to a pool…drenched myself with the water hose!

4. Took long “cold water” baths …Refreshing!

5. Laid directly under a fan …My Mom would even put a pan of water in front of it …Seemed to help…probably was getting a mist from the breeze blowing across it…

6. No cooking in the house…Didn’t catch me turning on the stove and adding degrees to the thermostat!…Cold cuts for sandwiches were fine …washed down with all that lemonade and tea …

7. Went to visit someone who had the privilege of owning an air conditioner…if only in the living room or one of the bedrooms…Where everyone all of a sudden hung out!

8. Spread a quilt under one of the many big trees we had and laid and looked up through the branches … getting sleepier and sleepier as the sun shone down and a breeze stirred ever once in a while…

9. Used the old-time hand held fans we had received from a church or a funeral home that had a wooden handle attached to stiff cardboard with a pretty picture of Jesus on it…or made one of our own from stiff paper…folding back and forth like an accordion and making it as big as we could …We might even color it to pass the time away!

10. Swing in a homemade tire swinghung from the branch of a sycamore tree …or the double seater porch swing …If it was available…a hot commodity!

One more…eat popsicles , fudgesicles or orange sherbet push-ups bought from the bicycling ice cream man and his cart.

What are some of the things you did …so many years ago?…My curiosity has come alert now…even if it is 100+ degrees…COOL ME OFF!

“My Kids”!…

Thank goodness we had air conditioning at school…but, after being outside and running/walking around our track or playing a game of kick ball …the kids were ready to cool off…when we returned inside…Besides grabbing a water fountain and almost draining it…some of the things we did were…

1. Keep the lights out in the room…Darkness  seemed to make it cooler…and quieter!

2. We saved all the leftover milks and juices from breakfast…and in the afternoon after a hot workout…nothing refreshed better than good cold milk

3. Letting each student wet a couple of paper towels and laying it on their necks or foreheads… a quick cool down!

4. We sometimes made milkshakes in our Bake Shop area…Just ice cream , milk and flavoring…in a blender…YUM!

5. Sometimes we found opening the windows with a breeze coming through the classroom…beat the air conditioner that was set at a certain temperature…”keep a look out for the principal or the janitor!”

6. Reading a book  while everyone rested their heads …calms you down and before long you are interested in the story instead of the heat…Sneaky huh?

7. Begin a quiet game of “Riddle Me Riddle Me Ree” … I See Something You Don’t See!…No kid can resist…

8. Pass the ice cube …like  “hot potato”, but ice gives it an extra “Cooling” feature…

9. Start talking of all things that are cold…make a list on the board …Even teams …Who gets the most wins an extra drink at the water fountain!

10. Just wait until that bell rings to go home and you can go get in your air-conditioned car  …I call it…Saved by the Bell!…You’ve earned it…You’ve tried to keep those kids cool all day! Enjoy a nice tall cold beverage of your choice…You fill in the_________as to what kind!
