A member of our TOPS Meeting …(Take Off Pounds Sensibly)…

Had this suggestion for losing weight… a visual…

I liked it… so made me one…

One glass says. “POUNDS TO LOSE!”…

and one says, “POUNDS LOST!”…

Fill with glass beads… or marbles… and remove one from the lose jar to the lost jar when this happens…

I hope to see more in the LOST jar soon!

We had the new baby in our family with Momma and her other little girl…

We had our sweet niece that had just gotten back from her honeymoon drop by for a visit…

Loved hearing her tales of snorkeling and beach…

My niece that was the Hostess… had her kids there…

and, I have to say, “They were perfect”!”…

We finally did play a few rounds of BUNCO…

and I was the proud winner of a new Beach Towel… which will come in handy on our vacation in August…

Thursday:

Bobby’s Birthday!… HIS day!… u20692860

Came home to enjoy the Coconut Cake made by our sweet nephew…

All homemade… and I have eaten it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!… 11210401_896849510408811_8499427922844415496_n

It will be cute when finished… with both sides being a different design…

to paint for my daughter-in-law…

Hopefully will have finished when they come over Sunday…

Looking forward to a sunnier day… and maybe get grass cut…

although my Grandson would cut it when he comes over…

Maybe will let him… at least part of it!… k12227632

I finally made my “G”…

the letter of our last name…

Have seen them in so many homes… and I wanted one…

Found the “G” in cut-out wood at a peddler’s mall… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

then chose fabric to cover it… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

plus some ribbons for accent… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Decided to put it in my bathroom…

so… I chose colors to match… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

and a really nice surprise came in the mail…

A beautiful card with a pretty bird… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I placed it in my photo holders to get a good picture!

Adventures On A Small Scale…

Gift…

I worked in the County Public School System for 30+ years… Children that had behavioral issues and special needs … My first year of blogging in 2011 was all about them… I had such a great year reminiscing and writing about their funny, sometimes serious, sometimes thought-provoking actions and sayings… I just knew some day I would do this… and when I found WordPress  through a friend that I have had since first grade… I was off and running… literally… off and writing … I felt I had accomplished one of my goals when that year ended… getting it down in words… and some day I hope to get it to the drafting part… and then to a book outline… and then to actually trying to get it published

Meanwhile my blogging has gone to everyday things that I encounter… Sometimes my family… my grandkids… my friends

Other times… I will just have something catch my attention… and I will have to investigate it by reading and learning about it… and then I’m compelled to write about it…

I’m not an adventurer … but, I believe we are all adventurous in our own way… If it’s gardening … exercising… working with kids… joining clubs… traveling… cooking “Blogging”…

I have lately become co-leader of a weight loss group … I just love the people I have met… and our weekly meeting keeps me on my toes … If I don’t lose a pound or two… at least I maintain… I feel this is a good thing!…

We weigh inplay simple incentive gamespay a small fine (10 cents ) if we gain… This is placed in a “Penalty ” jar…  We have a short program… Discuss what “business” we have… Plan on ways to raise for our club… since we are self-sufficient/non-profit… and give each other encouragement

I really like making up games … My school days will always be with me… I find it easy… because I do have some God-given art talent

We’re going to “SWIM OUR WAY TO LOSING POUNDS”

with the new game I came up with… Sounded like a good idea with summer upon us… Each member will have a cut out swimmer

representing themselves… and for each 1/4 pound of weight lost… they will get to move their swimmer forward through the pretend swimming pool

… Whoever reaches the other end of the pool at the end of 4 weeks will win!… A small prize  will be given … besides having fun and losing a few pounds… I put my idea on a piece of poster board  and wrote the rules

Simple adventures can be fun!… What are some that you participate in???… I’d love to hear…

“Enthusiasm is the Key!”

I’m going to Lexington Ky today…Our TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) group is having its State Recognition Day …It is a Western Theme…”Weigh Out West” We’ve got our cowboy hats…our outfits…our little hand-outs…and we’re ready to go! …I’ve been to a few of these events in years past…It’s an enthusiastic bunch  of women and men…Some are working toward their weight loss goal like myself…others are almost there…and others have reached their goal weight…Yeah! There are booths set up…we will get a T-shirt  representing the theme of this years SRD…I hope to grab onto some of that enthusiasm and gain some incentive to reach my goal…It’s really an emotional time …seeing people and hearing their stories of their achievement in conquering a weight problem …I admire their determination and effort…We’re are leaving at noon…will spend the night at the Hyatt Hotel   near Rupp Arena  …A night away is great in itself…Tonight there will be a Western Themed Barn Dance and get-together…FUN!…and tomorrow will be the Ceremony showcasing all the winners and leaders …a candlelight ceremony  which can bring tears to the eyes…I guess I’d better get going…a few things to do before we leave…

to be continued…

I returned yesterday…hopefully with new desire…hope that I can…and new determination…We packed the trunk  and settled in for our short ride to Lexington…about an hour and a half …We talked so much that we almost missed our exit…fortunately our driver Sharon, also our leader, was paying attention…I was the navigator  from that point to direct us to the hotel…We arrived quickly…parked…went in and registered and confirmed our rooms…As we entered the Hyatt  we saw many of our co-weight watchers…dressed in Western attire …We are a pretty lively group…and like having fun…The events would not start for awhile…so we decided lunch was a good idea…As we returned to the Hotel…our rooms were ready…We went up and changed into our “Costumes” …that’s what I call it…just Western shirts, jeans, cowboy hats and boots …We wanted to fit the part of the evening…The program was centered of course on incentives of people who have lost those unwanted pounds…before and after …leaders speeches  …and entertainment from a woman who had started her career on the Lawrence Welk Show  …She was funny and had a great country/western singing voice …very good!…It was a very long program we all agreed…actually way too long…almost 4 hours…so a couple of us had to take breaks outside and get some air…Next years event will be right here in Louisville…close to us…and will be a Mardi Gras Theme …we received our invitations …should be fun!…we hope to attend…some having reached their goal weight and some at least much smaller…These conferences do give you incentive …and of course are fun!…We had supper late and then retired to our rooms and PJs…to talk more…After a good night’s sleep…we dressed in our new T-shirts celebrating our convention and headed to find some breakfast…after eating we looked around in some shops…talked some more…we were learning about each other…becoming friends…gave out our little packets we had put together to other TOPS members eating lunch by then…The afternoon program is centered on the graduating members…dressed in white dresses  … who have reached their goal weight…and the KING and QUEEN  who has lost the most for the year 2010…We heard their inspirational stories…Then our KOPS members…these are the ones who have reached their goals (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly)  and have kept their goal weight…from 1 year to 25 years…were honored and this centered on the “Circle of Light” …all of the KOPS surrounding the outside of the auditorium holding candles of light…over 100 I presume…very moving…They receive a yellow rose and in turn pass their rose to someone who they would like to see reach their goal by next year…so sweet…We exited the conference …looking forward to next year’s event being held in our own city … maybe by then my TOPS will turn into a KOPS!

We had FUN!

“My Kids!”…

We didn’t have conventions …but, we did have lots of what we called “assemblies” , “events” and “activities” at school…One of the speakers at the convention I went to, talked about “enthusiasm”…That is something our kids had in common with us …They would get so excited at any activity we had…if it was a carnival …they played all the games…loved winning those little 2 cent prizes…They loved our parades …The whole school and of course us…walked all the way to the Fire House down the street and came back l…carrying banners, signs and cheering…It was called “The Patriot Walk”…They loved the ball games …cheering louder than anyone…waving their pompoms …The kids loved participating…the first to volunteer  to give answers to questions…trying to win a T-shirt  or some kind of prize…If it was an event to wear a funny costume, a funny hat or a certain team color…they were up for it!…so yes!…”Enthusiasm”  is a part of all events…and they had that for sure! … Just like us…they looked forward to whatever next activity was coming up…

“Exercise Stories!”

I’m not sure who has inspired me more…my sister or my great niece…My sister has brought her granddaughter to our Take Off Pounds Sensibly meeting to inspire her to lose a few pounds  …She is just a little girl…Elementary School…Big for her age maybe…but, cute as a button…and after seeing her in action last night a smart cookie!…I praise my sister for loving her so much that she has taken on herself to bring her to the meetings…helping her in her food selectionsencouraging her…But, I have to give credit to this sweet little girl for inspiring  all of us last night…Yes!…she has lost  in only one week of attending…But, what I want to tell you about is the special exercise program she made up by herself …to help her exercise daily…She got up in front of all of the ladies in our club and showed us…She came up with a story…In this story she stretches …she walk/runs…she reaches…she bends…she twists…We had a workout with her as she demonstrated…Her story is about daily experiences that she made up…In this story she walks out to the barn…milks a cow, picks cherries from a tree …makes ice cream , cleans up her room, gives her room a good scrubbing, she bakes cookies …all the time using this story to exercise by…What an imagination!…What insight for such a young person…to come up with her own Exercise Program…But, most of all…How inspirational  !…The ladies in our group of weight watchers  were highly impressed…and I will keep that little demonstration in my mind for many days…I think I’ll try making up my own story to exercise by…but, I’ll never come up with one that showed such determination as did Elisha’s last night!

“My Kids!”…

Sometimes our kids at school could be quite lazy …actually I think they came in tired…You could tell some of our kids had not had any sleep  the night before…they couldn’t keep their eyes open no matter what we tried…so we would have to have them sleep for a while just to begin the day…This was probably because of lack of supervisionwatching TV , playing video games …talking to friends on the phone…all night…So, when morning came they were exhausted…Maybe the parents didn’t even know…kids can be sneeky !…We had a pretty structured routine…and at times our plans were having to be changed to accommodate the kind of day our kids were having…If anything, you found out how to be very flexible in a classroom setting …Sometimes to inspire a little energy we would put in exercise videos …One, was pretending to play different kinds of instrumentsbeating drums, playing a tuba, a guitar, a piano  …Marching in a band…All of a sudden we had a full-fledged band  playing in our classroom…It was fun to watch how some of the kids got into playing their pretend instruments without even knowing they were exercising…How inspiring!

“Friends…We love ’em”

I tried to call a co-worker today about being off so much due to the snow…no answer…so Iexpect she was out enjoying her day off…there have been more snow days this year than in any of the 30 years I worked…isn’t that the way it is!…I have tried to visit my friends   at school, but lately they have been off so much it is hard to connect…yes, my co-workers are my friends…as I’ve said,”They are like my brothers and sisters”…I get emails from several of my “friends” I worked with and tonight one of them called me on her way home from an exercise class   she had began…we talked about an hour about her new job ( she got it after I retired ), family, friends, our weight loss goals, my being retired, grandchildren etc. …it seems like we see each other every day, even though it’s been weeks…I’m sure we will grow apart to a certain extent, but when we see or talk to each other we are still friends…my cousin,Vera called tonight from the hospital   in TN…she had surgery   and was keeping me updated on her progress…we are cousins, but we also are good friends…friends talk about everything…you can be yourself, they accept you as you are…listen to all your ups and downs…always encouraging …I talked to my other cousin the other night in Illinois  …we had played phone tag  as we call it for a day or two but, we eventually connected…we were born on the same day, so we share an important day together…she didn’t know my son would share it too, but he was born on our birthday also…I needed to wish her a Happy Birthday …we shared our day with each other and what we did…we are friends too…we share our thoughts   also…today I had a message on my phone from my “TOPS” buddy…one of us calls the other one sometime during the week for weight loss   encouraging words…she said, “Put down that cookie!”   …how funny, because I had just eaten one…I have just met Ginny a few months ago, but as she went to hang up, she said, “I love you a lot girl!”how sweet…I love her too…as you see, friends are important…they keep us happy…they keep us on our toes…they keep us thoughtful, they keep us knowing that we are liked a lot…I think I’ll call one tomorrow…and let them know “I love you a lot too!”

“MY KIDS!”…

As Andrea, Jan, Judy and I began to work together we found out all that we had in commonwe all enjoyed cooking, some of us sewing, some of us art/crafts, some of us traveling, some of us writing  …and as we found these things out and began to work with each we became friends…as friends,we went out to eat , not just with each other but, our husbands went too…we went to movies, we went to each other’s homes, we exchanged gifts…it’s funny how you get to know what others like as you become friends…we talked every day…sharing personal thoughts    as well as discussions on the best way to handle a troubled child  , what way was best to teach one of the kids a certain subject, what new ideas     could we come up with to keep our students enjoying school , and so many other things…we also became friends with the parents of these children…we have been to some of their homes for swimming parties, lunch, events that their child participates in…we all still hear from one or the other during the years…and I guess this bond will be lasting if not in seeing or talking  to each other …it will be in our hearts…and we can all say, “We love you a lot …    as a friend!”
