Valentine’s Day…

We actually did Valentine’s Day     with Carson’s Birthday yesterday…

We ate at his pick of restaurants… Golden Corral…

and it was really good…

 

although very crowded… we got seated… all 8 of us… with no problem…

Everyone got to choose from the abundant menu that was offered…. …

 

Carson had pizza and salad… his favorite!…

and then to indulge in the Chocolate Fountain… dipping marshmallows!…

 

The prime rib, salmon and the many offers of meats, vegetables, sides, salads, hot rolls, desserts were all tasty…

No cake needed here    … so many desserts!…

and I like how they are offering smaller pieces where you can try a few different kinds…

I only ate a bite of Lemon Pie … and then HAD to have a piece of Chocolate Fudge! …

MONEY and Gift Cards for the Birthday Boy…

and all three of the Grandkids loved their Heart Shaped Boxes of Candies

I brought them…

They are “MY SWEETHEARTS”!

I awoke to find a beautiful card from Bobby with a box of candy we could share…

JUST RIGHT!…

The words were perfect!… on the card…

 

 

We share a bond

that’s built to last.

We share a love

that’s unsurpassed.

 

We share a name

and happy home.

We share the places

that we roam.

 

We share our dreams

and funny stories.

We share defeats

as well as glories.

 

We share so many

things, it’s true…

I’m thrilled to share

my life with you!

 

and that says it all…

Anniversary- King Fish- Schimpff’s Candy

Forty-Seven years yesterday I met my Bobby… and got married five months later… One month later he went to Viet Nam  for a year…

We have been good for each other… love family… our two sons… and our Grandkids make days ever so bright…

We think a lot a like… love doing things together…

We celebrated a little… we don’t go overboard…

by going to the Casino in Indiana…

NO… didn’t win… but, afterwards went to Daisy’s In New Albany… to eat dinner…

Just good home cooking… cafeteria style…

Fried or baked chicken was our choice of meat… although there were lots of choices of entres… veggies… salads… desserts…

Mashed potatoes with gravy(me)… beets(me) and stewed tomatoes(me)… It was delicious!…

Bobby had chicken too… but, with green beans and macaroni/cheese…

Cornbread or rolls… and a small dish of Blackberry Cobbler to share…

Today we went with our friends to eat at King Fish  … a restaurant that is 68 years old… (1948)… located along the Ohio River…

The food was exceptional!…

BIG Fish Sandwich… White flakey meat… rye bread/tartar sauce… Garden Slaw and homemade Onion Rings… plus Hush Puppies…

Our friends had been the week before… and got us coupons to use today…

How thoughtful was that!…

We were then taken to Jeffersonville, IN to Schimpff’s Confectionery…

Basically a candy store that has been worked and owned by the same family since 1871…

Four generations!…

They also have lunch served M-F 11am-3pm… and 11-2pm on Saturday…

Soups… Sandwiches… Homemade Desserts…

They also have a soda fountain for malts… sodas… milk shakes… and sundaes…

Will have to eat there sometime!..

They have tours of the candy making and museum next door…

A major tourist attraction!…

Big clear jars of all kinds of candies fill a wall… Chocolates of all kinds of flavors fill the glass enclosed counters…

Right now… being February…

Heart Shaped Boxes of Chocolates are for sale for Valentine’s Day  …

It was crowded but, got waited on easily…

I had to have Modjeskas… a marsmallow candy covered with yummy soft caramel…

Bobby had Chocolate Covered Caramels…”Best he had ever had”, he said!…

David got their special of Red Hot Cinnamon Hearts…

and Janice had a small box filled with a variety of chocolates to last all week…

It was a very pleasant day… and just as we started home a cloud burst came over with heavy rain …

We had timed it just right…

Making Christmas Cookies

I bake cookies  to mail to out-of-town relatives and give to some of my neighbors every Christmas…

I do easy recipes… and ones I feel will keep during the mailing process…

Some basics I want to share …

For most of the cookies I made I used cake mixes…

Recipe:

1- box cake mix (your choice of flavor)

2- eggs

1/2 cup oil or… 1- stick of margarine or… 1- stick of butter…

(they all work well… but, I think I prefer the margarine)

Mix by hand…

Add whatever other ingredients sound good to you…

Pecans

Walnuts

Candy Pieces

Chocolate, Butterscotch, White Chocolate, Peanut Butter Baking Chips

Coconut

Sprinkle with Decorative Colorful Sprinkles  if you like…

Makes them festive and yours!

DAY 1:

Orange Supreme…

Added Orange Peel and topped with a piece of Orange Slices Candy…

Also added chocolate/orange Candy Morsels to some of the dough…

Key Lime…

Topped some with the Orange Slice Candy…

some with Green Sugar Sprinkles…

and some with Toasted Coconut…

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip…

I also added Butterscotch Morsels…

These 3 batches made 16 dozen cookies…

DAY 2:

Just added a few Chocolate Morsels on top…

a few Peanuts on some with a Decorative Candy Snowflake…

Strawberry…

Rolled batter in Strawberry Dry Jello (like sugar)

added a Snowflake Candy…

Butter Pecan…

Added Chopped Pecans and Maple Flavoring…

Sprinkled with a few Colored Candies…

Rolled some in Powdered Sugar…

Funfetti (Vanilla Sugar Cookies)…

Added Red/Green Sugar Sprinkles and

Candied Peppermint on some…

These 4 batches made about 18 dozen…

Day 3:

Dark Chocolate Fudge…

Added Choclate Chips and

some were sprinkled with Sugar Crystals…

Ginger Snaps…

Pressed cookie dough balls down with a glass dipped in sugar…

Made Candies (Chocolates) in small baking cups of red and green…

Peppermint White Chocolate

White Chocolate/Pecan/Butterscotch

Dark Chocolate Pecan

2 batches of cookie dough made 6 dozen cookies…

50 Chocolates…

They are all packaged and in freezer until next week… when I will package them in containers to mail… a variety going to everyone…

I hope they enjoy as much as I loved making them!

Sunday Grateful: October27, 2013… PEZ Candy

We had a knock at our door this morning… actually knocks and doorbell ringing again and again…

Who could it be?

It is so early for Sunday visitors…

Maybe my Grandkids… more like my youngest son (their dad)… as far as the doorbell ringing… over and over again… He’s known to be quite “funny” at times…

But, no… it was three little boys… three of the ones who had pestered me yesterday at my Yard Sale…  https://babyjill7.wordpress.com/2013/10/26/ill-never-do-it-again-ha-ha/

They had come by over and over looking through the PEZ Candy Dispensers

I had for sale…

I wanted to sell them as a group… if I could… I had over 60+… probably more… just estimating… and know people collect them…

At the end of the day I had given them all to one of the boys… since NOW… that I wanted to talk to them… they had all disappeared…

Isn’t it the way!..

I had him promise me   to share the “wealth”  with all of the others…

I found out he did just as I asked…

Loved that!… made me happy inside…

but, now they wanted candy to put in them…

I didn’t realize I needed to fill them up before I gave them away…

How stupid of me!…

I had to inform them that I had no candy… but, Wal-Mart could help in that direction for a couple of dollars…

One looked at the other two and said, “I told you!”… and immediately thanked me…

They all said thanks…

Is that not a grateful!…

That they had the manners to say Thanks!…

They left… and I feel they were on a mission at this point…

To talk Mom or Dad into candy to fill their  PEZ …

Bird’s Nest for Breakfast?

There are real bird‘s nests…  

Candy bird’s nests…

Chow Mein Noodle Candy Nests…

Cheesecake Nests…

Books about Bird’s Nests…

and my Mom passed on this “Egg In A Nest” Recipe to me… and I just loved it when she made it… I thought she was magic!

Melt about a tablespoon of butter in a non-stick skillet…

Take a piece of bread of your choice… whole wheat, white, french… and cut a hole out of the middle… save the circle of bread … (I used the top of my spray oil)… it was handy!

Now place in melted butter in skillet…

Break an egg into the center… Are you seeing the idea of an egg in the nest???

You can leave the egg yellow whole… which is probably preferred by many… but, I must have my eggs DONE!… so I break mine…

Salt/Pepper to taste… I like pepper!… let brown a little…

Turn and let cook as long as you prefer…

I eat mine with Grape Jelly … Just flavors I like together…

ENJOY!…

May be fun for Easter Breakfast…

Valentine Chocolates

There are many kinds of gifts given on Valentine’s Day…

Jewelery…

Candy…

Perfume…

Flowers…

and yes, it seems more for women than men…

Over the years I have received all of the above…

and now Gift-Cards are considered pretty nice… and a dinner out…

My Dad always bought us Valentine Candy…

Mom got the bigger… prettier… heart-shaped box of chocolates…

and my sister and I got a smaller version… 

I remember savoring each bite… and I could keep my candy for several days… maybe weeks… as I would take little bites at a time… and if any had nuts in them… They were given away…

I now love nuts… but, I had a loose tooth when I was young… and hated the thought of biting down on a nut and a tooth falling out…

I know… go figure!

Let’s get back to Mom’s box of candy … She was worse than me about keeping it for a long time…

We would have eaten all of ours and be thinking about hers sitting on the buffet in the dining room…

So tempting!…

But, you knew not to take any… It was her gift from Daddy…

Of course she would let us have some… She just liked to see us almost begging with our eyes… I believe she got a kick out of it!…

When we were finally told we could get a piece…

We would find where several pieces had been pinched… a slight indention… where my Mom would have to see what was inside…

We commented on this… only for our Dad to say, “It’s her candy… and if she wants to pinch every one of them she can!”…

Do you think that kept us from eating piece after piece out of her pretty Valentine Box???… Of course not!…

When the box was finally empty… she would let me have it… I thought it was just beautiful… and would keep my crayons, pencils or something that I felt was a treasure in it for a very long time…

I knew there would be a new one next year…

Like clock-work… on February 14th   … Daddy would bring in those boxes of heart-shaped candies  just for us!
